I had a 916, fun bike, expensive to maintain. Valves couldn't be heard over the rattle of the dry clutch. Idling with the clutch in it sounded like a handful of change in a cement mixer.

The engine is relatively quiet. It’s the dry clutch that’s noisy. And yes, rev a L twin to 12k + rpm produces the sweetest of music.

I think tappet valvetrains were problematic for a long time, so overly complex alternatives like these made sense. Now they are durable and efficient, so these other designs have largely gone away.
