What's new

what's too much on a midlife crisis car?

I spent $100K in my early $20s. I’d say $150K is a good number.

that 66 fastback Charger was really awesome and would be a head turner. loved the color. i have poured over those listings on that site.

my one deal killer is a convertable. i just dont like the looks of them and i think a rag top in the Texas sun will need to be replaced every few years. just never been a fan.

and a 3 speed auto gives me ED.
Their DFW location is pretty popular for tire kicking, never was sure if the prices were "right" or if the cars were anything more than Barret Jackson rejects.

Agreed on the convertible, never been a fan.

Parade car is the only benefit IMO if you think you might be doing some of that.

The good news is those 66 and 7 chargers tend to be dumb cheap. They just never gained the following of the 68 to 70

I love my convertible 71 buick centurion. 455 th400 12 bolt. It is a fair weather car. I don't drive it with the top up. It sits in the winter here, but so would any other classic car or hot rod.
If I lived in hot and humid tx, the convertible would loose a lot of its appeal.
If you want power and comfort, definitely look at the bigger cars, there are a lot of advantages:
Full frame, unlike the unibody cars, that twist and have to have subframe connectors added if even medium power is applied.
Most are big block cars, even if you decide to not keep the big block there is more room for activities.
They are quite a bit cheaper than their pony care and muscle car contemporaries.
Biggest downside is that aftermarket parts aren't as readily available as the more popular mustangs, corvette ect.
They are also heavier, but not by that much especially when compared to today's cars.
As to the original question. I wouldn't spend more than 25k to 30k on a weekend cruiser classic car.

I had a 67 Charger, identical to a 66 except for the turn signal indicators on the front fenders. It’s a fun car, but a few things to be aware of:
1) the one piece 4-1/2 foot taillight lens was hard to find in the early 90’s. Look it over close.
2) the photo luminescent instrument gauges are super cool at night… if they work. I sourced spare dash clusters and used a few gauges as needed.
3) concealed headlight motors need regular care and adjustment. I checked them at oil change intervals.
Super fun and comfortable car. The fold down back seat is nice too. 383 magnum was enough power to run hard with and still drivable for my wife. One of my favorites.

alright, talk me into or out of a manual transmission.

Like original 4 speed or newer box?
Same for Auto, og 3 speed or?

Unless you go for a high dollar restomod with 2015 takeout drivetrain.....

Or, going for a bigger cruiser with a bench seat for nookie. Bench seat on date night wins every fucking time

basically would be a modern transmission Tremec 5 or 6 speed.

built auto doesn't sound bad at all but i haven't really been considering them. i should though

As far as cars not being driven...

My suggestion is to make cars more a driver than a toy, an old boss was restoring a 67 f100 4wd, I ran him thru a bunch of tech and tips, but implored him to put AC in it ftom the very beginning. Spend that fucking money now. Otherwise it'll sit April to October, then in October the battery will be dead and the carb will be fucked, you'll deal with it after Halloween. After Thanksgiving. After Christmas. After new years. It's cold in the garage.
Now you've got March :homer:

(Posting pic because it's pimp)

I saw a red f100 on the road a couple years later and flagged him down, it turned out nice, and had AC:smokin:

I suggest
AC good brakes, overdrive, 300-450hp efi, comfy interior (doesn't need to be pimp, but comfy)

That's a car that gets driven while the monster sits in the corner getting stale because it's too much prep work for a busy guy to drive to work on Friday

*add turnkey reliable hp as funds allow:laughing:

I’ve always wanted to buy a flipped 06/07 Duramax regular cab and swap the 66-72 Chevy truck cab and bed onto it. SAS with 35” mud terrains and you’d have a comfortable daily driver that looked awesome.

A moderate hp say sub 450 would be a lot of fun in a stick shift.

OD would be mandatory for me.

Bigger HP and a auto might be easier to manage and drive.

A '69 Cougar XR7 preferably with a 390 or 428CJ :smokin:

I don't think the Eliminator is within budget....but maybe.
I don’t think the OP Ford’s.

That’d be my go to though. I want either a Cougar or a Torino in that order. Doesn’t even gotta be numbers matching or anything stupid. I’ll clone whatever it is I want and engine swap to get something spicier.

love the styling and the look over a Mustang but still is a pony car. not much comfort inside.

The cougar has a much more comfortable seating than the mustang...or at least I thought so. I had a 68 fastback 4spd mustang and a friend had a 69 cougar XR7. The comfort in the ride was night and day.

I'd give them a look before ruling them out.

i dont typically Ford at all, but i will concede that the Ford of your grandpa's days is not the Ford of today that i am accustomed to being passionately in hate with.

i could see myself enjoying a Galaxy 500, 66-67 model year.

Now we’re talking. There were killer iterations of those too. My uncle has a 66 7 liter 4 speed like the one Jay Leno has getting restored right now
