What kind of 4 wheeler for yard work?

I had great luck with Yamaha grizzlys.

I have a 1986 Honda 250 Fourtrax. Has a semi auto transmission (no clutch), air cooled, 2wd and racks front and rear. Works perfectly for pushing my junk around and pulling my little trailer. I had my buddy's 2010 polaris 500 at the house for a few days and tried to push a car into my shop with it. Nope, cvt belt just slipped. It was a pain in the ass all around. He offered it to me very cheap as an upgrade from my old honda. I wouldn't have traded straight across and I only paid $300 for the Honda. Go cheap, and simple. You can't kill old air-cooled Fourtrax.

As said more than once. Foreman/Rancher or early King Quad. We've got both in camp. If you're going to do any amount of cruising the Honda will be more comfortable. The Zukis are shorter and are little tanks. They are the nuts for off trail deer recovery in our little mountains.

I have an 84 fourtrax pretty sure it has orginal oil in it lol.. its awesome strong as hell I've pulled my 1ton chevy around my yard with it. Best machine ever made imo

I have a 98 Kawasaki Bayou 300 4x4 that I use around the house. The ho/lo range is nice but full time 4wd is annoying. In loose gravel I was spinning trying to pull a toy pickup roller. Either myself or the machine needs a bit more weight for jobs like that. It is a little tank though, being electric or pull start is nice as well.

that kind of money buys you a perfectly sorted turn key ford 9n tractor here.
another grand will buy you a loader attachment.
way more useful than 4 wheeler.

The best 4 wheeler is a 3 wheeler.

While that's true, the trike market is fucking retarded right now. Everyone decided they wanted one this year and they're paying $1,000 for shit people were giving away last summer. Nice utilities are pushing new quad prices.

Well I was just thinking about listing my ATC 70/90 collection. Good to hear.

Thats kind of what I was thinking, a lot of $$ for bikes that are so old.

for $2k more there are older utility sxs with beds that are an even better option

We are looking at a Honda recon. Msrp is 4,299. Have not been to a dealer yet to see if they have any deals or leftovers. Reviews seem decent for a cheap no frills utility atv.

now is a horrible time to buy. i'd wait until at least after the election to buy if you can.

around here the dealer showrooms are empty. nothing. the sxs i bought last December but now with 1k miles is still going for $2k over what i paid otd. i plan to list every atv i dont 'need'.

if you need something now i'd gd as cheap as you can. i had $400 bayou 250 that was great for chorin'

Atv suck for yard word, climbing on/off all the time, no place to carry tools or crap. UTVs rule for this shit.
Even a crappy mule like my neighbor has gets the job done 5000,%

Good time to do it, 70 market here is astronomical since they added a class for adults to race flat track on them, guys are paying 1000-1500 for average 70's with no paperwork.

stupid fukn phone / website I wasnt done...

5000% better than using an ATV
Been there done that

If it's just for yard work, a set of turf tires can give good traction w/o excess damage.

Of course, you still need to not peg the thumb throttle (turf tires aren't fookin' magic).

The quad won't look nearly as gnarly . . . but then neither will the grass

I don’t know about turf tires on an ATV, but turf tires on my mower ain’t worth a fuck for traction.

I’m putting a winch on my zero turn mower just because the tires suck.

Recons are great little machines. I bought one new when our oldest kids were teenagers and they beat the absolute shit out of it. I’d strap as much firewood as I could on the front and back racks to haul it out of our timber. The thing never gave up. Very low maintenance too.

Honda rancher or foreman fits what you are looking for and are extremely reliable. I picked up a rancher this spring and use it to pull a 60” swisher mower for mowing our yard. Works great. Yes you can tear up your yard if you are not careful, but that goes for just about anything.

I think turf tires are great for flat surfaces. When I demo'd my zero turn they brought 3 diffrent models out, the mower with turf tires slipped quite a bit on inclines. Ended up with bar tires which did a good deal of damage until i learned how adjust my driving for them.

This, granted a bit more money but I have a 2016 Grizzly 700 that I use for what you have listed. The power is great, it pulls awesome and it is 3x the plow my lawn tractor ever was.

or $3k less buys you a pretty nice used compact pickup
with heat, maybe A/C, doors that keep THE FUCKING WASPS out and a much more useful sized box
Choose wisely and you can get a limited grip rear, too. Almost every 2wd ranger I've seen around here has one.

ETA: and I'm pretty sure they're making some real mean tires for 14s now, for the utv market

Ya, a 2wd ranger is so much more useful than a 4wd, locked, offroad specific vehicle with a dump bed on a property.

I couldn't even get up the main road at the place I'm at in 2wd

3 of them are locked, doesn't do dick when you're backing up a hill.

well shit, there's your problem, fix your yard so that you can always put the drive wheels downhill
I used to get stuck a lot before I figured that one out and took out a few trees

So much easier to regrade 3 acres with a 250' elevation change than to just buy 4wd :laughing:
