You are stuck thinking inside the day laborer box where the economics of being tough on people make sense and the economics of avoiding the people who would game accommodations and perks if they were offered do not.
Nobody on my team makes less than six figures. Everyone on my team took a bunch of expensive man-hours to hire because we have to both evaluate competence and hire for some semblance of cultural compatibility and attitude. These people take 6-12mo to onboard to degrees of autonomy sufficient to justify their pay and they all need to be able to have a sufficiently good working relationship with each other that they can trust that the other people on the team have their back because we're basically all in a position where any person can make a big mess for another with a minor oversight.
The cost of threading the three consecutive needles of what you can do for a team that has an orthodox jew, a cripple and a vegetarian is irrelvent pennies compared to the cost of anyone on the team just kinda saying fuck it and phoning it in like they work at the DMV
