What's new

Well… this will be an awkward day when he goes back to work.

My wife is a social worker and her group did a team building thing at an Ax throwing place. She is badass and crushed everybody else and was laughing and having fun and two of the other social workers complained to the director that they were triggered because of her ability and they felt it was a microaggression of dominance and not healthy for the work environment.

So, the next time they did face painting and a couple of people complained about culture appropriation.

For my team, I cater in awesome food, I have a special table for the vegans and other food oddballs and the rest of us enjoy a 15 minute agenda (to justify the celebration) and then have a blast eating and catching up....

Team building is when something is fucked up and everyone jumps in to help solve it and when we're done we know we can trust each other.

Faking it, is faking it.

You're missing the point. They were searching for him in the dead of night, where a neon shirt would have been easier to spot. :flipoff2:

Now he does. Know.:flipoff2:

First, your wife's work sounds toxic.

Second, is awesome food just slang for pizza? :flipoff2:

When I was looking for a new job prior to landing this one I interviewed with a place who's only "benefit" was that they had weekly "team building" events.

"So I'm expected to spend unpaid time outside of work doing work activities? How is that a benefit?"

Interviewer: ...

Wasn't going to take that job if offered anyway but I'm sure that didn't help.
Every company I ever worked for, 100% of all team building was paid time on the clock.
Glad you didn't take the job with that ghetto company.

Mt Shavano is one of the 14ers isn't it? Googled the trail and it looks like is 9 miles and 4,600 ft. of ascent. Also says the last leg is scrambling over a boulder field. That's pretty gnarly for a work team building event. I'm pretty sure 80% of the people in my office wouldn't make it.

I wonder how many people here could bust that out off the couch tomorrow?

Having 0 frame of referance to how knarly that is, would my fatass make it?

I did Elbert a couple months ago with wife, kids, dog, it's rated as easier but is about a mile longer with roughly the same vertical. I'm not in the best of shape (5'11"/175ish, will be 49 shortly) but not badly fat, don't smoke, don't drink a lot, and I live at 5k feet, and it kicked the crap out of me. I was doing well to walk into the taco place on the way home and had to go up/down stairs one step at a time the next day. Elbert is ranked as around fifth-easiest 14er in Colorado. It even wore out the dog, and he's a just-under-1yo we think pittie/Aussie spazzit.

For reference- hiking to the 1800 post at Toro Park and back is about 6 miles and 1700 ft at as closet to sea level as you can get for that much climbing. So Shavano is probably twice as steep and 3 miles longer and up where the air is thin. I bet you could make it happen, but I'm not sure you'd be happy about it.

Reminds me of when I was an apprentice the instructor said he was getting pizza for the class. There was an islander in the class and he said he couldnt eat pizza and wanted fish. The reply was, “fuck you, you can watch us eat pizza”.

That gave me the warm and fuzzies. Best way to handle that kinda shit.

Investment in people needs to be balanced against their value both absolutely and the morale value of that investment to the team.

The sort of "fit in or fuck off" management attitude you support to only works in body shop places where people are of low value, cheap and interchangeable at low cost, food service, boot camp, trade schools full of knuckle dragging illiterate apprentices.

Thats funny as fuck considering you’re a work from home or office computer dweeb where that kind of thinking has grown roots where we need cator to an individual’s demands over a nice gesture to the “team” thats not even required.

We can just hang you from a tall tree on a short rope as useless being AI can replace your job. “Oh but I went to school and took calculus”

Had one of those workers. He was told We would get him one with anchovies. He quit and tried to file a claim of racism since he’s Jamaican. He forgot to disclose to his Lawyer that the guy who told him the response was also Jamaican. And there are Dominicans Puerto Ricans Haitians Cubans Honduras isrealie and whites all working in the same shop eating the same damn pizza. 😂

I’m betting the lawyer told him to lose his number after that.

The amount of people cruising around looking to file race charges is definitely on the rise. Almost like if you constantly tell people they are victims they will believe it eventually

You are stuck thinking inside the day laborer box where the economics of being tough on people make sense and the economics of avoiding the people who would game accommodations and perks if they were offered do not.

Nobody on my team makes less than six figures. Everyone on my team took a bunch of expensive man-hours to hire because we have to both evaluate competence and hire for some semblance of cultural compatibility and attitude. These people take 6-12mo to onboard to degrees of autonomy sufficient to justify their pay and they all need to be able to have a sufficiently good working relationship with each other that they can trust that the other people on the team have their back because we're basically all in a position where any person can make a big mess for another with a minor oversight.

The cost of threading the three consecutive needles of what you can do for a team that has an orthodox jew, a cripple and a vegetarian is irrelvent pennies compared to the cost of anyone on the team just kinda saying fuck it and phoning it in like they work at the DMV

If an engineer in India can't replace my why will AI?

I look forward to your explanation.

Did you notice that people who know how to work and just get the job done get treated equally by their peers (with some exceptions for actually racist shitbirds) and it is usually the low quality, low output types that are “racially profiled”?

If I’m paying someone 6 figures, they should be mature and competent enough to get over themselves and fit into a team. They can be a vegan Jew on their own fucking time. Especially if they are a .gov employee at any level.

If your income earning prospects are poor enough trying to game the system by sucking and then claiming profiling kinda pencils out in the short term.

I will stop reading right here since you obviously are stuck on the idea that not delving out special treatment to attention seeking victim types just looking to cause problems in the group is treating people tough.

There's two sides to that coin.

If you're paid big bucks you can answer the phone at 11pm, stay late when you need to, show up for meetings, etc.

But on the other side of that coin if you're worth the big bucks it's my responsibility to treat you like it and not run you like a rented mule and then expect $50 of Dominoes pizza once a month to make up for it.

If we all do our part and our parts are redundant then the times when nobody does their part should be vanishingly few. I apply this principal to policy and procedure on both the business-business side of things and human factors side of things.

But obviously this hinges on not having slackers abuse it. In my workplace works out because of the high initial investment, slow turnover, investment in team cohesion (not just my team, this is top down policy). And my team and other teams basically self police because everyone is aware that it ain't a bad gig and doesn't want it to become a bad gig.

I am under no delusions under what would happen if I tried to apply these principals in a McDonalds staffed with teenagers.
