This shit is hilarious.

Gov. Phil Scott's administration is backing a plan to impose a so-called "miles traveled" fee on all electric vehicles in 2026 as a way to make up for millions of dollars in lost gas tax revenue.

There are roughly 13,000 EVs registered in Vermont — a number that's expected to double in the next few years.

The state Agency of Transportation is supporting a plan to record the number of miles driven by an electric vehicle at its annual inspection, Patrick Murphy, the sustainability and innovation project manager at the Agency of Transportation, told members of the Senate Transportation Committee this week.

Murphy said this approach avoids major concerns associated with other electronic technologies used to track mileage.

"So that we don't get into privacy concerns, we don't get into high costs of being able to collect that data," Murphy said. "And then we're able to apply a fee to that."

The committee is also looking at a plan to impose a new annual fee on all electric vehicles.

I mentioned this in the hybrid thread we had a few months ago, this is coming, and it will not be long before all the states follow suit. Pennsylvania already collects all the data they need every year to go this route, they just need to flip the switch and make it happen. My fear is they will turn this on but also leave the gas tax on and double dip every gas driver. And it is stupid we already pay taxes on electricity why not reallocate some of that to roads, full electric cars are already using more electricity at home. Stupid government is stupid and getting worse. Get off my lawn.

cause that tax money is already spent on other shit.
How dare you ask that our political overlords be responsible with it.

My brother just told me Texas is doing this on his Tesla MY.

I said I have no tears for him because my dually registration is $125/ year because of its gvw even though I only drive less than 6500 miles a year.

That perplexed him...

I guess when we go to no state safety inspections next year they will lose that ability to record mileage?

The National Average for Gasoline Taxes is ~50 cents/gallon (fed and state)
Charging an EV $200 (mentioned a couple different places above) is the equivalent of the tax on 400 gallons of gas.
Depending on mileage, that equates to somewhere around 12,000 - 15,000 annual miles.

I wonder if the fed gets any of the money collected...

My brother argued that his EV gets 50mpg and as such he should pay much less.

I explained that due to the weight and abrnomally poor tire life of the EV it might use much more road than the equivalent 50 mpg Toyota Prius, Nissan leaf etc.

ask him how much the pavement replacement will be when the Tesla catches fire and a 5,000 degree lithium fire consumes the car and melts everything around it.

hopefully, he isnt inside, of course.

Which I would be 100% for if they privatized all the roads and took the .gov totally out of it.
I'm not a fan of my whereabouts tracked and monitored. So many ways we are though. Plate readers, EZ pass Road cameras. I was born in the wrong decade...

I'm totally fine with setting a per mile tax and recording mileage annually to REPLACE gas tax entirely. Any other scheme is just a hidden tax increase.

Is that really a concern though?
That's a 80 year old man's talking point isn't it?

All my un-intended fires resulted from flammable liquids...

Ever see what happens when a gas tanker burns?

Ev's should not get out of paying road tax I think.

Maybe the chargers just report the mileage?
My guess is all public chargers are recording that data currently.

they say its a low number each year, but the issue really is there isnt a small lithium battery fire and i dont think anyone knows how to put it out.

theres been some highly publicized bus fires that have resulted in some cities abandoning the electric bus fleets, most notably in london earlier this year.

I'm not PRO EV-ization of the world but to compare a gasoline car/fire vs a lithium battery as one is worse than the other doesn't seem to be worth while discussion to me.
