It's real. My 8-yo 3rd grader reads at about the same level as my 6-yo 1st grader. The now 8-yo was in kindergarten when schools were closed early because of covid, she went through 1st grade and much of 2nd with masks. Lockdowns and masks had a real and lasting impact on kids.

As someone with two kids. I can tell you the mask development issues is very real. The standards actually got moved for speech development and other markers. Moving the goalposts again. Speech therapy requests are up over 300% in my kids district alone. Instead of just 1st and 2nd grade they are adding a 1-2 split class for the kids that aren’t quite ready for 2nd grade. Not sure that I agree with that... All of the evidence to the contrary points to an anomaly of younger people dying inexplicably. Seriously. Do you remember a time that's happened? Or any time that we have had circumstances like this in our lifetimes? I don't.
