Used car market changes

cliff version:

shit is still selling HIGH. like giraffe pussy high. take you nada/jdpower numbers and stick them where the sun doesn't shine. plus, right now is tax season. you want to see vehicles sell for above book? show up during tax season. I agree its a bunch of retards, but its the game. And I either get in the mud and wallow with them or I go broke.

When I was playing in that game, It was the buy here pay here lots being the worst offenders of paying giraffe pussy prices for mouse twat vehicles.

The lots selling cash cars struggled the most. Lots selling at $60 a week for as long as you want to drive were doing great.

Had no interest in bhph shenanigans.

I got a buddy who does it. Doesn't matter really what he pays for the car or sells it for because he's likely to repo it 4 times with each owner making a down payment and about 6 months before default. The cars paid off twice and he still owns it

Tax time always amazes me at the sale, it's like nobody knows it is coming or prepares for it in any way. Prices on the $2-5k stuff at the auctions here are high and as soon as the first wave of tax money hits they'll go even higher.
I'm almost certain the market will tank around April-May, especially if interest keeps going up.

This was my experience as well.

I was a cash lot, I was always so frustrated in how much the BHPH lots would pay.

The only cars I could make money on were the ones that I had to replace the engine or trans or fix weird electrical issues.

I hated all of that.

"Trash is cash"

an Altima with bullet holes and 50# of filth inside for $800 add filler paint and 8hours of scrubbing would turn it into $4000 Didn't like the bottom feeder feeling I got from it.

Selling to Carvana is a no brainer.
Just sold my 2019 Tundra, I paid 44K otd and 65K miles and 5 yrs later Carvana paid me 39K. Money was in my bank in 2 min. after the guy hit send. They are short on tilt backs so a private truck showed up, loaded mine and then went half a mile down the road and picked up another.
The guy that came and paid me said he had 7 cars to look at that day within 15 miles of me

I had 5 people claim to want it but none could come up with the cash @ 43K, I even offered it to one guy for the 39K because he's someone I like.

They must make money on volume.

Financing is where they make money.

I'm hoping to do better - Carvana's website told me my '10 JK Rubicon w/ 85k miles is worth $11k :frown:

Hopefully they're just "racist" against older junk
Ignore the offer and then do it again, I did it 4 times over the course of a couple months, it went up every time by +/- 1K

My windshield was cracked and I forgot to tell them, told the guy and he says "Oh they don't care" they only care that its what you say it is.
He walked around it, opened the front doors, hooked a scanner up, put it in drive for about a foot, put it in reverse and then shut it down and paid me.
Took 15min. max

A year ago my wifes nicely built 16 JKUR was worth over $27k in trade and I wanted to ditch it and get her something new but she didn't want to give it up. Fast forward to two weeks ago and she tells me she wants a new car and the Jeep is now worth around $15-17k. :shaking: I told her sorry for her luck and that at that price I'll be keeping it and using it as a wheeler before it ever gets traded in.

Conveniently there is a sand pit next door to wheel in when it comes to that:flipoff2:

Like every car dealer these days.

I like to make sure i have the price in writing before I tell them i have 20k in cash to wire transfer.

Like most things in the last 20 years, no value in the product, only what it can generate. I bought a burner phone few years ago, Never have I been bombarded with bullshit to that extent.

I would've guessed $17-20k, but I haven't bought or sold a vehicle in 8 years & honestly haven't paid attention to used vehicle prices in the same time.

I accept that I'm going to lose $20k+ on it, and more concerned w/ finding a buyer who "needs" (i.e., understands) a rig with hydro-assist steering, beadlocks, and a 4" wheelbase stretch. I built it to keep ~forever, so 1000s of hours of customization w/o concern for resale --> then decided to re-sell

If it's worth < 15 grand, I should swap the front diff guts back into the stock housing & sell the RJ44 housing separately :frown:

How much do you want for it
50 grand :flipoff2:

But seriously, whatever's fair
dunno-gif.627990

Until recently, I was guessing that was 17-20 grand (which seems appropriate, like what I would have to pay to buy it) but I'm just looking for fair market value & more concerned w/ finding someone who can appreciate / use what's there.

I sold a Hyundai that I got for free and fixed the main harness where rats had chewed it. Same deal - girl showed up and walked around it and took a couple pics and then drove it like 20'. Didn't hook up a scanner though. It had an airbag light on that I didn't disclose (and I couldn't get to go off with my scanner) and she didn't care. Handed me a check for $17k. They also didn't have a truck available so she put a key box on the window and parked it out of the way and a wrecker came later that night and picked it up. I googled the vin a couple months later and saw that it had been listed on their site and sold for $23k. And the airbag light was off in their pics.

Kind of surprised they're still overpaying like that. I thought they had filed for bankruptcy a few months ago.
