What's new

the woods sucks at hunting thread

Read the regs...

Successful hunters must notify a Conservation Officer within 12 hours of taking a bear by calling (603) 271-3361 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and may be required to take a department employee to the kill site. Within 24 hours after time of kill, the hunter must exhibit the bear, with reproductive organs intact, to a Conservation Officer

say I can skin and quarter it. so he looking at the bear broken up and a set of balls?

Be worth a phone call maybe. But thats what I got from it.

Also says you need a bait permit to dump old food in the woods behind your house.. you have one of those?

  • A landowner placing bait on his or her own property does not need to submit a baiting permit or map.

Course it doesn't say that on the page for bear hunting... your game regs are confusing

Do some reading on predator calling. It's a lil more entertaining than sitting in a tree house and waiting. Never really know what will come in

I'll stop cluttering up other threads.

start of another year.

Bear season started on the 1st. Barrel is out. Bakery hasn't given me donuts so its been deer corn mixed with store brand fake maple syrup.

last night:

That's papa bear. He's been showing up for the past week or two. Also have mama and two cubs that show up separately.

Was out there yesterday morning around 5am. nothing showed up.

I got a late start this morning and this was the outcome:

Good friend of mine said they won't be back after being spooked. So who knows. Pissed at myself for that. Then again, I wouldn't shoot a momma in front of the cubs. Maybe papa bear will show up again.

I'll grab a full bag of deer corn and mix the syrup with it. put it in the barrel this time. go out again in the morning.

never spooked a bear though. that was a lesson learned. there is NO WAY I could sneak up on a bear. they were GONE before I could even get to the site.

Deer season starts on the 15th. that'll be another couple months of disappointment.

Forth year hunting. Only thing I've ever got were a few turkeys. Interest is fading fast. Finding out this just really isn't going to be my thing for much longer.
Fark,
I went trough a 6 year dry spell.
Some years good
Some years suck.

I'm tellin ya, bait your back yard. You can be washing the dishes or whatever and open a window and take a shot.

You'll also get to see all sorts of other wildlife come through.

That's the point. They try to trick people into thinking they need a permit.

Lol I can tell your not a hunter type. I wouldn’t get caught dead poaching without a permit. They can and will confiscate weapons vehicles atvs for a poaching violation. You can see all the dnr prizes by what they auction off ever year.

Imo the game warden is the most powerful law enforcement agent in the country.

yea, there are soooo many opportunities to bag something off season. I won't even think it of. F&G can make your life really uncomfortable.

But I could just drag the barrel right to the back yard. take a seat in the loft above the garage. that sort of thing. sounds really chincy though.

I didn't say he had to shoot it out of season. I just implied it. :flipoff2:

So do that. Are you hunting for meat or hunting for sport?

well, tonight was waaaaay better.

Hit the tree stand after work. Not five minutes later, two cubs. They sat there eating for an hour and a half. No momma or papa. My wife tells me she heard a shot yesterday and I heard one a few days ago. I'm thinking that was momma as papa was in the cam the other day.

Was neat seeing the cubs. they got spooked a few times. One time one of them went up in my tree.

It was neat watching them though.

I passed on a last years cub last night. Heard it calling from up in a tree, maybe #80.

If I can get tags I go hunting, haven't shot anything in 5-6 years of getting tags but I just like being out and see what I can see.

Tags the last 3 years have been a royal pia to get so I have not attempted it or been out.

Wife says she just heard two shots a few minutes ago.

welp.

Don’t give up, could be someone sighting in. I let a friend come up Tuesday mid day to sight in.
could be. she heard two shots about a minute apart. so who knows.

I'm rebaiting when I get home tonight. be out there tomorrow morning before first light. see what I can see.

We can’t bait in MA, just got to where your noise tells you. I wish we could bait, that would be a game changer

In Maine you can prebait. Setup everything for a few weeks, then go out and hunt. I can only start baiting on opening day.

baiting is lame :flipoff2:. I fully understand it's legal in other places and our typical hunting is still based on locating food and water sources but it my brain can't get behind it.

Safety off, fucking same cub, safety on. It’s still early.

So that's yesterday. Wife said she heard two shots today. Hopefully it wasn't him.

Two cubs came back this morning. No momma. So she's been taken out.

You need to just sit on that stand for the day. Like get there before daylight and dont leave till dark. Bring a game boy and maybe a few coloring books to stay entertained. You'll kill something

I can't. There's no way. My entire life I've needed something to tinker with. Something manipulate. I bought a Sudoku book to do- never done one of those puzzles before. I just....there's no way for an entire day. Two hours, fine. Three, alright the trees are starting to take shapes of deer. Four hours I'm at my wits end. At five I'm out of the stand.

I just can't sit there. I need to be splitting wood, tinkering on a motorcycle, cleaning on the r/c truck, clearing a portion of the land, cleaning the shop, running wiring in the garage, taking care of the driveway. I need to be doing something. Fishing is sort of the same. After two hours I need to do something else. It goes against all instinct.

How do you make it all day “at work”?:lmao::lmao::flipoff2:

It is called hunting and not getting for a reason...

Bears are stubborn bastards. If you offer free food, they will come back. Get some cheap peanut butter and smear it on the trees. Up high and into the bark so they have to work to get at it.

I don't hunt them anymore. I think they taste like shit and I feel like you owe it to the critter to get it mounted or a rug made. I live on the edge of the Great Dismal Swamp and they are very prolific. Also live in peanut country with several peanut butter manufacturers. Poaching cocksucker down the road buys 30 gallon barrels of bad peanut butter and smears every tree where he hunts and proceeds to shoot 6 to 7 bears every year. POS can't shoot a rifle so he uses buckshot so God only knows how many he kills and can't find.
Black bears are rare around my area but we’re seeing more of them every year. That said, I had some black bear a guy had at a cook out party 15+ years ago, I thought it was some of the best meat I’ve ever eaten besides some excellent cuts of beef.

I'm like this, but that's why I don't bother to hunt or fish.

Nope not for me either, never have. Out before sunrise and back at the farm house for a big brunch meal, knock out a few zzzzz then head back out around noon or a bit after until after dark.

I can’t hunt like I used to anymore either. I use to be in the stand until couple hours into the daylight. Then get down and stalk around. I’ve killed more deer on the ground then in a stand. I love to hunt but I’m not an all day in a tree stand hardcore hunter.
