What's new

The Scoob

A half ass polish job on the spacer will make a big difference in seal life. Not that it really matters because it's just a grease seal.

Fuckin wish I were out driving this thing. Gotta order a different set of 3rd gen knuckles.

Tie rod end holes aren't drilled deep enough. Could figure out the taper and order a reamer, but that doesn't seem worth it.
The tie rod ends are on and appear to be correct in one of the last pictures ? Are they not ?

Like 90% of all automotive tie rods and ball joints are one taper and then the next 9.999% are another.

IIRC 7deg is the common one and 10deg is the less common one but I might have that backwards.

With a little fucking around on the internet you should be able to figure it out without using any measuring tools.

What I got at the moment. With and without flash.

They're not seating as deep as they do in the 2nd gen knuckles. I still need to get new rod ends and see how they sit.

The knuckles seem alright. This was my :homer: thinking "hey, some NOS stuff on ebay". Got the package, and in big ol' letters, it said CHINA. Fuck. 'Least I got them for $34 each, but damn.

Get those taper inserts from ruffstuff, drill it out, and put the TRE on top of the knuckle :flipoff2:

Not uncommon to not seat as deep as an old knuckle that’s been over tightened and ran dry for 20 years . Is there play or movement with it tightened ? It appears to be sufficiently deep , send it !!

Thought about that a few years ago.

Very true. No idea how much wear and tear was on this heap when I got it in CO. Entire underside had parts with salvage yard paint marks.

Gonna get some new TRE's on the way and think about sending it.

Shit stain! Man. Accidentally closed a cat in my car a few nights ago. She's a nervous wreck and one of our mousers. Hosed the carpet with PB Blaster :lmao:. Still smells like cat squirts in here. Gonna have to dunk this mofo in bleach by the time I get it on the road.

TRE's in my Rock Auto cart. Trying to think of anything else I should throw in there while I'm at it. As long as it comes from the same warehouse

The $50 (probably $100 now) front end kits on eBay wind up being much cheaper if you ever wind up having to do inners, boots, ball joints, etc.

Stuck some MOOG TRE's on today. They're slightly beefier that whatever brand was on there.

Got to thinkin'. To fill in the gaps in the sheet metal over the rear tires, I may grab a roll bender at Horror Freight and worm some DOM around to fit the wheel wells.

It's getting there. Missouri weather and working outside slows stuff way down.

Just noticed you're far from my family in Maine. I've been through Freeport a few times.
Yup, when asked if I've been here my whole life I say "not yet" . there's a few of us natives left.

Went to grab a roll bender today. Neither store had both boxes for the set. I'd call down to Branson to see if they have it, but it's gotten difficult to rely on people on the other side of the phone.

7 degrees out. Little bitty lithium iron phosphate Antigravity motorcycle battery still fired up the subie.

Been testing out some cheap, stick-on heating elements to see if they'll work where the defrost doesn't. So far, they're looking good.

So I grabbed some speed sensors off a newer Forester the other day. Wasn't until I pulled them off the I realized that they don't use an o-ring.

That said, I think I may grab a little brass at the hardware store tomorrow to turn down and press into the speed sensor holes. Right now, they're holding water and rusting like crazy. Finally have more than a 22-hour break in precip coming up, so I can dry the knuckles out of press in some plugs.
