The Land Cruiser Thread

Bump for some more Land Cruisers.

Im taking Lucille out for some ****boxing this weekend. Recently put in some new 750cc LCE injectors to help the lean issues ive been having with the turbo 3rz swap.

I am wanting a project 40 and am finding a lot of rusted out junk. I don't mind doing body repair but would prefer less. All the ones around here are 5-6k and look worse than that.

This is the one I let get away. Honestly the only vehicle I have regretted selling. Had 5 rigs at the time and 1st kid on the way so I just wanted to thin the herd a little bit. HJ60 from Europe, left hand drive, diesel w/ the granny low 4 speed and a full float rear. It badly needed a body. In hindsight I should have just chopped the top put a cage and some nice seats in it and wheeled the piss out of it. Oh well.

New member and stumbled on this thread, so thought it’d be a good place to introduce myself. My LC is a ‘73 40 5.3/SM465/Orion dual ARB 4wheel disc. The usual list of upgrades- once you are willing to step away from purity. Mine was a Vt rig originally, so the tub was toast. 3/4 Aqualu fixed that and a metaltech family cage for protection.

I’m currently bending up some tube fenders to replace the stock ones. Somehow it didn’t hold up to a rock introduction. This is more of a sunny day driver for the wife and I that I take to the dessert a couple times a year.

This leads to my next thought process: do I build a dedicated wheeler? The 40 does great, but every time I scratch/dent it the wife comments on damage. My usual trail friends are driving an early bronco and a 4 door JK. The bronco is a beast on coils and the JK seems like a nice wheelbase. So I’m looking to build a 112-116” wheel base rig on links. Likely another LS, but an auto this time. Not sure this one will be street legal. But I don’t think I’ll build a buggy…

I picked up an ‘85 60 with a crusty rusty frame to steal parts off. I was thinking of swapping the arb thirds from the 40 into the wider axles and a stealing some other choice bits. Then I got a potential offer that might take the whole thing and leave me with some build money. So I’m sitting here dreaming of what to build.

Of course there’s an electric 59 F100 I need to finish first…

Production EVs are gay, but the homebrew stuff is neat. Post some details on this sometime.

That 40 is neat too. Props for wheeling it and not just driving it to cars & coffee.

Honestly, I’d take a production EV if I weren’t such a cheap ass. I need awd and a bit of clearance. Self driving would be great on my commute…

The f100 is a mongrel. Crown Vic ifs/S550 irs- probably getting bagged. Toyota Prius power steering, likely e booster brakes. Drivetrain is Lexus GS450h transmission(dual e motor). Should do 300ish hp.

This is supposed to be a father/son project for the kid to drive. Originally, it was going to get a V8, but I decided I didn’t want him to die. The EV sounded interesting, so I dove in. Trans is mounted and mated to the driveshaft. What’s left? Everything

As to wheeling the 40- that’s what I built it for. I bought it in ‘94 and it was my daily until I realized how stupid that was. After what constitutes a complete rebuild (x2) it’s a ton of fun. In the summer the wife and I fight on who drives it. Couple times a year I drag it down to southern Utah.

I battle with the same thought on a daily basis. I ended up with my cruiser in 2016 but it has been in the family since new in 1975. It has lived quite the life getting used pretty hard but has stayed pretty straight all things considered.

Basic FJ40 stuff; 350/sm420/toyota case/lockers. I am by no means a Toyota purist and I love seeing cruisers on tons and 40’s, but there’s a part of me that can’t come to terms with cutting up a 40 with straight panels and no body rot.

I completely agree on a clean cruiser shouldn’t be hacked. Personally, I’ve never had the opportunity to cut into a clean cruiser. Mine is a classic northeastern mess. It ran well, but the body was toast. The frame has my 20 something yro frame patches. The only reason it looks clean is the Aqualu 3/4 tub.

As to the next build, I’m still in the dreaming stage- sorta. I have a line on a 45 chasis that has been hacked:
  • Dodgey power steering. The box Literally has a “skip” when turning the wheel.
  • No drivetrain. I’m guessing the engine mounts are Chevy. Probably doesn’t matter.
  • SOA on what appears to be the old ball and claw axles. Likely the same quality as the steering
  • LWB, but the frame and bed have been bobbed- low to medium quality. Probably solid, but ugly. .
  • Front clip is off a 71 or 72 40. Trail rig quaility at best.
  • Frame is undetermined. I know it’s full of dirt though.
  • Tin top is possibly fixable, but it’s got some wrinkles.
The good:
  • Reportedly clean ***le
  • Cab is in fair to good shape. Angry beaver put radio in.
  • Top sides are in good shape.
  • The bobbed bed needs work, but I won’t be modding a clean piece.
  • It has a hood spear!!! I don’t know why, but I love those lumps of metal.
  • Doors are pretty rough, but maybe they’d make decent 1/2 doors.
  • I’ve always wanted a 45…
Could it be returned to stock? If you started with a good clean 45 that needed a tub. Like I said I’m still in the dreaming stages. A buggy would be fun, but my friends are in full body rigs. The 40 does great, but I don’t want to comp cut to get the extra wheelbase I desire. Not to mention the wider axles.
