What's new

The 2024 Firewood Thread

I usually clean the eye out with a bur in the die grinder to smooth it out a little
then you get the handle fit to a real tight press fit, then after getting it in there leave it long past the head, splinter the excess out and soak it in oil

notch a few deck screws with your grinder so that they'll snap off inside the eye of the head, not extending above or below the head

I love my fiskars. The metal is a little softer but it splits awesome. I have the whole set but I like the 8lb and 6lb splitting maul for getting things done. I got he 36” handle in each but there are othersizes if you want a shorter one. 28” I think
This is the way.

I love cool old iron and old timey stuff big time, but man, those Fiskars...

You can be the most donk fucking retard while swinging a fiskars and you can't hurt them. I half bury the thing into a block of twisted white spruce, then swing the whole block and axe over my head and slam upside down onto splitting block on an angle and the axe just takes it. Overstrikes don't matter. Nothing matters. You are absolutely not man enough to bother those axes.

The X27 is a stupid name for a 36 inch handle axe, but that's the most badass splitting axe ever.

Not directly related to firewood but...
My clone 372xp has developed a high idle when hot condition, and I tracked it down to the intake boot/carb connection. Decided to not mess with the chicom carb, and it already had an oem intake boot. Well, $70 and a new oem Walbro carb latee and she runs like a champ, way better from when it was running at best level previously. Also dialed in the peak rpm this time, much higher than I figured by ear.
Now to go cut some more wood.

have a buddy that tunes my saws and he uses a tach to tune the carbs. I think he bought his from a Stihl saw shop years ago.

It's getting about time to get in the woods again now that it's cooling down here and the bugs aren't as bad.

Ya, I bought a tach 6mo ago and this was my first time using it, works really well. All the specialty adjuster screwdrivers, and the tach kit.
Lol, we've got maybe a month before too much snow. I cut all summer.

Don't you only have 2 seasons up there? Winter and July?:flipoff2:

Wife's aunt and uncle lived in Laramie for a few years. We went up in 2014 to visit for the weekend. Got up to 80 on Saturday and down to low 40s at night. Was beautiful country though. :smokin:

Im in need of supplying wood for winter as secondary heating. What would be a decent entry level axe? I'd like something better than lowes or TSC would supply, but not spend a shit ton on money. This is what the PO left

Any recommendations?
Coucil tool 5lb does most of my splitting. I have a 6lb maul as well but this axe and a couple wedges will get 95% of what I split. Anything those won't bust (Knotted up Fir or Hemlock) I'll 1/2 or 1/4 with a chainsaw first.

12’ Titan, they changed their name recently and it escapes me. Has highest tip speed of any I looked at.

imagine you could get one going faster by buying a 540 rpm unit and hooking it up for 1000 pto throttled back a little bit

That would work nicely with a 120+Hp tractor. 540 rpm is WOT on this tractor. Tip speed on this mower is over 15,500 fpm at 540. Most are in the 12-13,500 speed. When i don't need all the power, i drop about 300 rpm off the engine to save fuel and maybe a little wear and tear. It is a noticable difference on the fuel consumption. For me cutting a full year of growth is WOT, and slowing down if RPM starts getting pulled down. The MX6000 doesn't have 1000 rpm PTO option, economy PTO, stall guard, or hydrostatic dual speed, not sure any of those would make a difference to me in actual practice. Maybe the dual speed, but it would be shifting every hill and heavy grass spot.

Titan changed their name to IronCraft a couple yrs ago to get away from the Chinese titan branded stuff. I’ve got several of their implements and all seem to be holding up just fine.

Looking to get a flail mower from them to mow our field with. Currently mowing it with a 7’ Woods BrushBull bush hog, and it’s a long pig of an implement.

And to get the thread back on topic, got all of this yrs wood in totes (6 cords). Started in on stacking red oak firewood for use in a couple yrs, the stack will hold 4 cord when finished. Piled up what I had left for newly cut red oak that should fill out that set of stacks. Need to stack up the poplar I have on the ground as well. Had several blow down this year and it will get used. Found a guy to buy some for making charcoal, he makes his own black powder for his cannons and says that poplar make a potent black powder. He’s got a cord from me so far, it will be a trade for learning a new hobby.
