Stepping up my tow rig game

I'm sure everyone has a different perspective but it was a dream killer for me. It was a crew cab also and could not get comfortable.

BTW, my first wheeling trips were in dads reg cab 90s idi non turbo towing a cj7 up Monteagle hill for the Rosser Round Up At 25mph :smokin:

Was the seat blown out? I actually like the seats in my 97.

Aaaand you still got there...
:flipoff2:

I'll load up and take a trip to SMORR which is about 1.5 hrs once I get the JKU Dailey and ready for a shake down. Probably use the wagon first, take info on how it does. Then a couple weeks later do the same in the OBS.

As stated earlier by someone the leveling will probably just make the squat worse in rear once loaded so I'll probably skip that.

I'm not after a fuel savings. I'm after a tow rig that doesn't cost 20-90 k that will pull this set up easier with less worry of pushing it too hard than my 5.7 2500 now

With the viable info I've got from some of this thread that didn't involve "you're a gay brodozer" opinions it sounds like I jumped gun on a good deal but a truck that ain't what I need.

If you decide to sell it, I'd leave it as stock as possible. That will fetch the most money and be easiest to sell.

I’ll chime in here. I tow a 27’ gooseneck with two rigs on it. Scaled it with my 01 crew superduty. 24,800 all in. So I’m going to give you advice from someone who actually does this every trip. One- my 01 7.3 gets hot fast on grades. Damn hot. Your obs doesn’t have an intercooler. It’s damn sure gonna get hot. Pull it down and let it scream! Two- two axles to brake that much weight sucks donkey balls. Ask me why I went to three 7000 lb axles on the trailer? I damn near plowed thru a brand new fifth wheel and truck that locked em up in front of me. I literally slide to a stop to the side of them in the dirt. You judge your risk according to the seat of the pants feel when it comes to brakes. Ima thinken you aren’t gonna have enough brake with the setup you have.

I've gotta echo that. I have an 04 f550 and tow a 28' enclosed goose that scales out at 25-26k (gross weight, truck, trailer and load) with one rig in the trailer. Trailer brakes only work on 2 out of 4 hubs, and it's not enough without an exhaust brake. Even with it can be sketch. I've smoked the front brakes on my 550 once, almost crushed one of my buddies in front of me, and I'd like to never do it again.

With good trailer brakes, I hope there will be no issue, but that much weight is nothing to fuck around with.

Let me guess..... Electric drums?

12x2 1/4” drums. Yes, that’s what 99 percent of trailers are going to have on em. When you’re talking about stopping 24,000 pounds, two axles isn’t cutting it with that brake setup.
The boat guys are all running surge brakes or electric over hydro. :stirthepot:

Braking
NOTHING like good stopping power.
Thanx rockdog:beer:

I have (2) 12.25 x 3.38 brakes. 16k empty, so once I load a tractor, hay, etc I'm pushing 30k.

I'd consider them adequate. You drive with an entirely different mindset.

I've used a friends dual tandem electric over hydraulic disc, that a game changer. Adding more drums to heat soak not so much. Then with trips youre a target for DOT.

Yeah, you’re running a wider brake shoe than mine. I’d guess that would add a lot more grab. No doubt, when pulling heavy you have to drive differently.

They make car hauler wedges with a single dual wheel axle under them.

I've seen those, not sure I get the idea.

In my experience. 7k axle brakes are hit and miss. Sometimes they work really well, sometimes they suck. The trailer I pull at work everyday is 3 7ks and they suck.

Stepping up to 10 or 12k axles, the brakes seem to be way better.

Like you don't get why that combo exists or you don't get what I was nitpicking?

I don't understand why it exists for highway use. As much as I hate triple axles, I think they have an advantage for something like that which sees mostly highway and not much turning.

I can't see why you'd want a single axle.

Maintenance on trailer suspension that's seen salt is terrible and toll roads fuck you like you’re a semi truck.

A single axle is definitely the way to go if your cargo permits it.

I'm not even considering a gasser unless I get a newer wagon. My problem with the wagon is I wheel it just as much. I'm too attached to the CJ with how it's set up to cut it up to do tons and 40s which is why I got an LJ.

I don't have a worry towing that with the wagon but I know it'll be taxing on it and I get avg 9 mpg towing one jeep so I can only imagine about 4 max with two.
I was dead set on a diesel too when shopping. I'm a poor motherfucker and learned fast how proud folks were of their 300+K mile PSD's and 12 valves. Snagged a '00 CCSB 4x4 w/V10 for 4K with 150K on it. I couldn't find a diesel in either flavor for less than 2X what I gave and this was 9 years ago. Ditched the 3.73's for 4.56's, added a Mike's 5Star tuner and a trans cooler from a 6.0 PSD and I still haven't reached deisel purchase price money. 8-10 when towing depending on terrain and some of that was with a 26' lowboy gn with a 8' bed slide in camper and 3300 lb buggy. Like the other post I quoted: IT'S NOT A RACE

Fukk toll roads we already pay +- $1. 25 a gallon in taxes. And don't get me started on roundabouts :mad3:

According to this thread, I've been doing it all wrong since 1996! :flipoff2:. But mines got a Cummins in it, so maybe that's why I get away it. :lmao:

Running stock tire size with the 4.56s?

Re gearing is high on my list for my 02' as is the trans cooler upgrade. Wife's cancer bled me dry, hoping to do gears this summer.
