What's new

Starlink yea or nay?

I'm one day away from canceling old business class fiber:dustin: I was able to get it into bypass mode, hook into my pfSense computer, and rocking out with it. The phone app is slow as shit and unresponsive at times. :shaking: I contacted support and then 15 minutes later, I got it into bypass mode. Oddly enough, I got an email and 'app push' about five minutes later over the issue and they noted I got it into bypass mode:eek: Big brother shit.:homer:

Next on my list is getting the permanent roofish mount. My question is how much blockage can the dish handle? I'm looking at making a flat 'panel' out of expanded metal with a lip on the bottom end that 'hooks' onto the dish and then use a metal ziptie to strap the 'kickstand' to the expanded metal. It would look something like this:
starlink4.jpg

The circle red is the ziptie. The blue is the expanded metal. The red 'tab' at the left is what will 'clamp' onto the dish. My specific question is how far onto the dish can the little red tab intrude onto the dish? My goal is cheap as possible with stuff I have around the house. All the reviews I've read are the generic 'pole' mount is garbage unless one is using 2" pipe. My pipe is ~ 1.625" if I recall right. $70+ on a mount is not what I'm willing to pay.

You can't have any obstructions or it will suffer. Just get the ladders out and put up on top or rent the boom lift.

I had mine on the ground with the stock base for a long time and it worked decent 95% of the time even in snow storms. Worse times the dogs knocked it over... and I found it on its side freaking out, but I installed on the top peak of my roof last winter in a snow storm at -20c and it is 100% better and was worth it and never an issue now.

I had to add a static route to make the app behave with my ubiquiti router.
For PFsense, it was as simple as put Starlink into bypass mode(I didn't want wifi or the rest of their stuff), Add new interface and have v4 and v6 as dhcp. Click apply and let it go.

So a 1/4" intrusion at the very bottom is going to be a problem? There are hail guards that are 'plastic' that cover the whole thing(not watching video but it was rf 'invisible')

And the app works still? The app was all that wouldn’t work on mine without the route.
This is v3 of the dish. No movement at all:emb:
Ahh, didn’t know that.

<snip>
The app somewhat works when I set it to bypass mode. It shows dish related tab stuff but none of the router stuff. In order to get back the router stuff, I have to do a hard reset at the router.

I can’t remember if mine worked at all or if it was just the stuff like heater control and Speedtest. The router stuff is gone from mine too.

did it come with a means to install it on a pipe?

just buy a $20 j mount if so.
or go get one out of the trash.

Ordered Starlink for the business Wednesday evening, shipping today out of OH, scheduled to be here middle of next week. Getting the wired adapter.
Much faster than the Starlink Beta order that I submitted 3 years ago:laughing:

Did the terms change on the mini unit?

Dad was looking at it and says you can buy it separate and pause the service now?

must have, the offer I got pre July was $30 per month but was in addition and could not be paused.

Also for me, Mini not suitable for service outside US yet (north america). I want to take Starlink to Africa next year

Thinking of switching over, haven't been able to find an answer to this -
They offer the residential and the roam in my area. Res is 140/mo and roam is 170. Hardware for either costs 199.
So what's to stop someone from getting the res, and just take the dish with you when you go off grid? Will they stop you from linking up if you aren't at the service address on file?

Yes, the dish has GPS or some other location system and knows where it's located. I don't remember the exact distance, but the residential subscription is locked to a certain distance of you service address.

I'm about 2 months in on mine. For me, it is a mixed bag so far.

When it works, it works pretty solid.

The problem is I have 'lots' of drops so streaming or VOIP is a bit of a challenge :( But I can take a little fault on this... maybe. I don't have my dish in the permanent spot yet... so it is apparently a little out of alignment. In its current location, there is a potential block.

I'm hoping that once I get it into the permanent location that being another ~20' up will help. I'm still looking at 'topping' a tree to help with the block issue.

40ish miles. Outside of that you have to change the address and, once you change it, you may not be allowed to change it back.

They used to be more lenient, people took advantage, and they locked it down.

Wife ordered ours through Home Depot. I'm supposed to pick it up tomorrow or Wednesday. I'll have to read up on instalation. This will hopefully give us some solid interwebs at the house. One more step to ditching AT&T.

The instalation is just plug it in and sign onto the phone app

So it auto points it self. I didnt realize and started wrenching on it first.
I'll have to check it out. Wife was saying something about getting the RV version so that we could take it with us. Then again, she tends to go for the cheapest option of anything. Should have it in my hands today or tomorrow.

Literally all the instructions lol. Just don't point it at any trees.

I have been super happy with our Starlink. Got the V1 round Dishy as soon as it was available. We had Softcom wireless before Starlink. Had problems almost weekly with it. Starli k has been 99.9% reliable.
