Starlink yea or nay?

The POE is non standard wiring, go figure. I bought one of the commercially made 12vdc adapters to run mine. First one, the Ethernet side didn’t seem to work, replacement will be here tomorrow. Didn’t want to mess around with all the wiring crap right now. Want to get this installed in the camper for hunting season. I wonder how long my M12 batteries would run it?
I think the Gen 2 is a solid 65w with some higher peaks.

A 4ah M12 battery might be 48wh so less than an hour...

Ya know that FCC funding to Starlink to help expand broadband in rural areas to the tune of $800+ million dillars that was revoked a couple years ago for seemingly inexplicable (partisan) reasons? And then nothing has been done to connect those communities since, even with billions of dollars spent? The massive help Starlink has been providing post-Helene has brought that interesting decision into the spotlight, people such as the house oversight committee want answers. :stirthepot:

Pretty sure Starlink orders in southern Appalachia are gonna be through the roof over the next couple of weeks.
Saw a tweet from Musk yesterday that they're making all starlink units located within the affected areas free for at least the next month regardless of account/payment status. They also got permission from the FCC to activate the sat to sell service over the area. :smokin:

I live in a very underserved area when it comes to internet. If you don't live within city limits, no internet for you. I can't name 1 single person who has internet now, that didn't have it before that isn't on Starlink.

They took all that money and buried fiber all over the city to speed up services to people that already had internet. I was on the Starlink waiting list for over a year, and I signed up as soon as it was offered.

Yep they ran several extra lines next to the 3 we already had here in town. There are a few areas out of town that have gotten it but it's pretty rare.

Percent of rural vs. urban blue voters = percent of fucks given about resources :stirthepot:

We are in a rv for the foreseeable future, 5 months in one spot. My wife works from home and we need solid internet. I am debating getting the standard for the better speed plus it's cheaper then switch it to roam when we move. Is there any reason I should go with the mini instead?

I have the gen 2 with roam. I have used it all summer on my Tacoma in the middle of nowhere, as well as on my semi when im at events (Trail Hero, Baja, etc). It has worked pretty much flawlessly. I am done traveling for the winter, so was going to downgrade it back to residential. No luck. It appears that option is no longer available. So it is now on roam full time. AND...my bill just jumped another $15/month.

As for the mini, the only drawback I have heard is the limited data. We just got back from Baja for the Norra 500, one of the other sweep guys was running the mini, and it worked just as well as my gen 2, and a couple gen 3's. Also easier to package, and I believe can be ran off cig plug. (mine requires an inverter since I havent upgraded to the 12v POE supply yet.)

I kinda wished I would have waited a few months and just picked up a mini for travel, and a gen 3 for the house. Since you will be mostly mobile, the mini may be a better fit (not sure how much data you will need. I think i saw its $50 for 50gb, then $1/gb after that)

They have 50gb for $50 a month or unlimited for $165 on the mini. The stardard has priority speed wise over the mini in a congested area. The mini has a max 50mps vs the standard @100mps. I am curious about real world use. We will go unlimited so we can use it for everything(tv streaming) I am not clear if you can switch the standard to roam and back at will?

My fullsize is $165 unlimited with roam. I can not turn the roam off and go back to residential only (used to be able to switch back and forth).

Edit: just went back to take the screenshot, and was able to make the change back to standard. May be because its the first day of the cycle, and I was looking at it this morning.
So that may no longer be a deciding factor....

Trucking outfit that hauls for us got the Starlink in their trucks running the Haul Road.

Driver broke down a few miles from the DOT camp by Chandalar and called to let me know he'd be late.
Then called later that day to say he was on his way.
No cell coverage so had me wondering. Figured he used Sat phone.

He was using wifi calling off the Starlink.

Probably not a concern in most of the L48, but a big deal here. Sat phone is fairly expensive, like $2k for a phone and $2/min.

Special Alaska tax? Or does shipping cost $1200?

My satellite phone costs less than 25 cents a minute if I buy an expensive plan.

Maybe the electrons cost extra in Alaska.

Hell if I know dude, that's the first time I've even seen what one looks like. I imagined a 90s bag phone with Direct TV sized dish. :lmao:

10 second Google says average is $1 a min.

Plus they have internet which I guess the log books use. Before it would just save and update when there was signal.

I guess my hookup comes from Texas. They want age verification to watch the pron. I'm not going to do it.

The 50gb roam is at the very bottom of the list. Not sure about residental to roam but I switched unlimited roam to 50gb roam today.

The "tax" is that Iridium is the only network that works worth a damn in Alaska. If you are paying $0.25 a minute it's not on the Iridium network. Starlink was a game changer. I went from almost $2 a minute sat phone calls to unlimted wifi calling when in the bush.
