Spinoff: Worst Concert You Have Ever Been To?

The Cars, 1980. Came on state, sung all their songs while standing completely still, left. Sucked.

Second worst was the Scorpions following Eddie Money, SkyShow 1983. Eddie Money could really rock in those days and the Scorpions was a let down after his show.

Wade Bowen opened up a local venue and put on a great show. Frankie Ballard was the closing act. Picture a 5’ prick with one arm in a cast singing 2 Florida Georgia Line type songs then started singing some terrible fucking cover songs. At this point, I told everyone I was leaving. Chugged my beer, yelled out something to him that he sucked, then a group of us proceeded to walk out in the middle of his song. As we left the venue gates, we could see even more people leaving. No idea how a “musician” like that stays in business.

Are you a 15 year old girl?
You looking for a date?:flipoff2:

Type O Negative and Pantera maybe 1996? Shreveport, the old Hirsch Colosseum. Some asshole decided there needed to be 30 rows of metal folding chairs on the floor and would not budge on the matter. Show got canceled 5 minutes before the gates were supposed to open. Full on riot in the parking lot, cars burned, some guy punched a police horse, yadda yadda. We saw ourselves the next day on MTV News running for our lives.

We would not have paid for that back then. It was free.

These days we would pay for it. :smokin:

Type-() sucked, although they had a good cover for Black Sabbath.

Somebody shoot me a link to the BEST concerts/acts you've been at, 20 years later when your kids were old enough.

Actors want to be rock stars and rock stars want to be actors, it's weird. We had 30 Seconds to Mars in for a NYE show, fucking brilliant booking, the audience was all under-drinking age girls, so the bar handle was super low, and of course they couldn't gamble or go to any of the night clubs, and the band sucked. I swear the guy on guitar, (Jared's brother, IIRC), was learning to play on the job, he extended sound check for like an hour, then just stayed on stage noodling for another hour, so we had like 15 minutes to set up for the opener.

Albert Collins in Indianapolis. Oppressively loud to the degree that it was painful. I saw the who in the 70's... that was good loud. Saw led zep in the 70's that was good loud. Albert Collins was like a wall of bass that chased most of the crowd out of the venue.

Saw Kid Rock once (a work thing) unbelievably laughable. The rap stuff was kind of good, but when he tried to sing, no bueno.

Doc, I love reading about your experiences in the music industry. It shows us an inside perspective we never see.

Thanks for sharing - not just this thread but countless others throughout the years here and PBB.

Thanks.

It's funny when I tell people what I used to do, they usually say, "Man that sounds like the coolest job ever", and I always say, "Sometimes it was. Sometimes it really sucked. And sometimes it was just a job. A lot like most jobs."

I didn't really get into it till I was in my late 20's, and wish I had started earlier. You used to be able to make some good bank out on the road, and taking IATSE gigs in between tours, but that life is no bueno for those over 50, so by that point you should be in management or ownership of a gear provider or something else that doesn't require a strong back.

I have worked as a security risk manager at about 100 concerts over the past five years. Its been a experience and I met some really awesome people. Also some serious assholes. The band Tool are aptly named. They insisted that backstage be cleared of everyone, and any security people turn away from them when they walk through. While performing, the lead singer would walk off stage if he saw camera flashes.

Bryan Adams is also a total asshole. I was looking forward to working the concert since he was one my favorite bands when I was younger. He treated security and the fire marshal like shit. He kept calling for all the fans to come down to the floor level and the fire marshal kept demanding security clear the isles. He told a hard working guard "Its my concert, fuck off!" when he was just trying to do his job and was working harder than that prima donna ever worked. Fire marshal told myself and the arena manager he was going to shut down the concert if that asshole kept it up. He was called off stage by his tour manager and told what was going to happen and he knocked it off, then bitched about to everyone within earshot all the way to his bus.

I spent about 18 hours with Neal Shon (Journey) and his wife. I was mostly with her so no one would bother her, but she spent every minute attending to her husband. While I was taking a break the entire band Cheap Trick came over and spent 20 minutes bullshitting with us. Very cool, down to earth regular people who where having a great time. Neal Shon was all business, but did make some small talk. I told him I saw them perform in the early 80's, then at the America's Cup in 2013, and what a treat this was for me. He remarked that they came a long way since the last time I saw them. That little Asian kid who is Journey's lead singer is funny as hell. Kept joking about his tiny Asian dick. Said it was like a golf pencil. Had everyone laughing in the van going to the airport.

Garth Brooks, awesome dude. Did five shows in three days and remembered everyone's name he came across backstage and took the time to shake all their hands. True southern gentleman and a true professional.

So to tie in worst concert with most memorable we went and seen Drive by Truckers with Justin Townes Earl opening. All JTE did was piss and moan about his dad like some 15 year old girl. Just shut the fuck up and sing a song. We get it Steve Earl is your dad and it was rough. At least you got to go on tour with him ,do drugs and fuck groupies when you where a teenager. Most kids with junkie dad's just get the shit kicked out of them and go to bed hungry.
Drive by was pretty good I thought at the time. Fast forward a few years and got to see Jason Isbell at Red Rocks. Hands down one of the best shows I've ever seen. It felt like you where seeing the guy at a small club not a huge venue. He did Decoration Day and Elephant in the Room and I got a little choked up. After the show all I could think was damn Drive by fucked up what a bunch of dumb bastards. And thinking about it all my fav Drive by albums and songs are Jason's song and albums he's on. After Jason blew them out of the water I look back on the drive by show a mediocre at best.

Friend got cheap tickets to see Green Day at Cobo Hall. I wasn't a fan, but didn't hate them so I went. It was a bunch of high school kids trying to be bad asses. We left early and went to the bar around the corner. It was so bad.

2nd place was Nine Inch Nails at the Palace on New Years Eve. Got there and found out that they weren't selling booze since it was all ages show. Band was on stage drinking while we all sat there sobering up. Sounded like ass, too. We left early and were at a local bar for ringing in the new year.

3rd eye blind. Even worse was that it was only around 3 years ago, so it was washed up 3rd eye blind.

My girlfriend dragged me to it with her friends. I couldn't believe that whole place (myself included) paid money to be there. I spent most of the time wandering around the concession area with a beer to stay away from the noise

Lynyrd Skynyrd at Konocti in 2008 or 2009. They seemed to have phoned it in, looked tired, and only played about a 30 minute set. It appeared to have surprised everyone, including the venue, as they were still in full swing selling beer when they walked off stage and didn't come back on. People all over were walking to their cars with a beer in each hand...

Five Finger Death Punch. I didn't pay for tickets, but it was the Worcester MA show where the singer told us his mom was sick and left after 3 songs. Turns out that was a lie. He was super fucked up.

Disturbed sucked too. I just don't like them. Same riff and drum beat in the first 5 songs. I left and went to the bar.

Saw Counting Crows, and although I am not a fan everyone knows a few songs. They were so bad that you literally couldn't tell what song they were singing. They were about done with Mr. Jones before my group even know that was the song they were playing.

Same, Counting Crows - and I am a big fan. Very disappointing.

First concert I attended when I was 14 was Milli Vanilli:lmao: I have attended and worked thousands of shows. Best entertainers by far are country entertainers...best festival used to be Rolling Rock Festival in Latrobe PA.

Beyoncé is a piece of shit like you describe in your 1st paragraph. She has alienated most police departments due to her recent “platforms” and political stances. Most higher end security are LE so guess how that works out for her?

Buddy of mine names Leo was head security guy for Journey the last couple of years. He was with One Direction and Tommy Lee prior to journey.

Justin Timberlake.

He played Saturday night at the Formula 1 race. The wife wanted to go so I figured I'd bend since she was nice enough to go to the race with me.

He was at least an hour late. Came on to the stage with Frank Sinatra's "My Way" playing.

I just couldn't get into it. POS.

I saw Rush during their Counterparts tour. I think the band that opened for them was Candlebox. Apparently something happened with their instruments and they were playing with all borrowed gear. It was fucking horrible but I'm not sure the lack of their own instruments was the issue.

I can't remember the tour security manager's name, but he was a pretty cool guy. Former law enforcement from a department in New York, if I remember correctly.

He is retired from NJ. Probably had a long goatee and tattoos everywhere. I work with his brother.

I saw Roger Daltrey at Konocti, well before 08/09 but I forget what year it was. Not a show I'd want to revisit but the sound was decent. It was short too, so we convened to the adjacent bar and drank a few with out of town females. Better experience in the bar with bar music.

I was at a trade show in Boston, Microsoft rented a bar and had green day playing. It was free drinks and a band, but the bar was 95% male geeks. That was a early night, even with free drinks.

I agree, I would be happier to buy overpriced watered down drinks then listen to green day ever again.
