What's new

Seller raised the price for me today. :)

What do you say?

Can’t speak for Riles but if I am selling something I only want to negotiate on in person I just respond with, “come take a look at it and we’ll talk.” This also helps weed out people who are just throwing out offers on multiple listings and narrows my interactions to those who actually want the specific item I am selling. I don’t do this for everything I sell, but there are times I don’t want to mess with text or phone call negotiations.

Thats generally what i say, never hear from them again.

Pretty much what KDX said “come take a look at it and we’ll talk.”
Anyone who's serious would just ask to look at it ASAP and wouldn't discuss price anyway.
I won't even respond to a first email asking how low will I go, etc.

Kinda a grey area IMO. You agreed on a price and were willing to drive back with cash, but timing didnt work on their end. They got a better offer.... I would have matched and said I had already looked at it and measured and wanted it. See where it went.

Maybe they will come back to you in a day or tow when no one else shows up.

HONESTLY... unless it was something very specific, would you take time out of your day, drive to some strangers house on the other side of town to offer what you are really willing to pay?

I can see it online. I will give you 1/2 of what you have it listed for. I am not going to waste my time to come look at it, and offer you 1/2 in person, or I can offer you 1/2 now.

The whole purpose of listing it with all the pictures and shit is so I don't need to come look at it.
Now if I get there and it's not as described, then we may negotiate, but otherwise, let's work all that shit out now.

It really depends what it is

I tried to get a deal on my 80 GMC. Seller wanted 4000. I went and looked at it and we made a deal for 3500. Be back tomorrow with cash. Same as you ,he called and said he had another buyer that would give him the 4K. I was a little annoyed but told him I'd give him the original 4K. I found out later that the other buyer was a kid at school that my daughter knew. He was pissed that I bought it 'out from under him'. I let her drive it to school for a while. :lmao:

Also, For you guys that say you go to negotiate in person with cash and a trailer. A guy came to look at my Triumph when I was selling it. He showed up with a battery and helmet. Do you think I moved on the price? He paid full price in cash and rode it home.

I'll come with the full asking amount, doesn't mean I'm not gonna ask if you'll take less. If the price on something is really fair I'll just pay asking price, but generally just asking if someone will take less while you're standing there with cash they'll say yes. I'll generally just take whatever answer they give, but I'm at least gonna ask.

Oh, I’m gunna ask, but I’m going to ask before i leave the house.

Hell, you’ll get there the dude will be gone, his wife will be standing there and you’re trying to negotiate with somebody who truly doesn’t know shit.
Now that may be to your benefit or your detriment… Who’s to say.

I don't do shit over the phone. Too easy to be bullshit over the phone when you can't see someone face, body language, etc and who knows how old the photos of shit they're posting are.

I'm not leaving the house for something unless I really want it and am prepared to pay asking price for it anyway. I'll walk if I get there and whatever they're selling is clearly in worse shape than they acted like, but it always seemed pointless to negotiate before seeing something.

Well I'm not driving 2 hours one way without at least an agreed upon number. You know exactly what price you are willing to accept. If you can't tell me that, I'll just move along.

Now if the price is firm...put that in your add. If it's something I really want and I'm willing to pay that price, all I'll ask is when is a good time to be there. I've done that many times.

Arent you the guy that wanted people to drive to your house to give an estimate for free?

I make offers on things sometimes over text/message and I am serious but not willing to pay the full price for whatever reason.

I went and drove 2.5 hours each way for some golf clubs a guy was selling a couple weeks ago. He was asking 900. I offered $700.

He agreed and I drove up two days later. I sure the fuck wasn't going to drive 2.5 hours each way to look at them and then haggle. If he would have told me that, he would have lost the sale.

I don't mind negotiating over the phone a little. If it goes on more than 2-3 exchanges, I am out though. If we can't agree in 2-3 exchanges, it ain't gonna happen.

I wont call on something if it has a stupid price. I ask if its got a title and what the address is. I wont ask if they are firm on the price, or make an offer until I'm looking at it.

If I'm selling something and you are honestly interested in it, you'll make the time to swing by and check it out. We can talk money then. All email/text/phone offers get trolled. They are just window shopping

Meh, lots of window shoppers become actual buyers or they wouldn't put shit in the windows for people to look at.

I have mixed feelings about your deal. First, I don’t like people bargaining over the phone. Go there and bargain, if you agree, give cash and take it away. On the other hand, you offered to go there. I don’t understand why you didn’t force this. 15 miles? I go 15 miles for an ice cream cone. If you are going to pull the trigger, pull it!

Good luck.

If I get someone who offers me half of what I listed the item for, my immediate thought is "cheap bastard" and my response is "thanks but I already have it listed at a fair price and multiple people looking at it" I list stuff at a price that it will move at. I'm not trying to make a living selling stuff and if you don't want to invest the time to come look at it, that's your problem and not mine. I'm also not into wasting my time with a bunch of negotiations. You show up to look at it, aren't a dick and make a reasonable offer I might come off my price. Otherwise, take it or leave it.

1/2 was an arbitrary value, but I didn’t think I had to explain that.

The point is, what’s the point in posting pics and descriptions if I still need to meet to discuss the items value.

Been holding onto that one for a while. Way to misapply it.

1st … the very 1st post in the park (well second) is keep shit private.

2nd.I give free estimates for million dollar projects, that take weeks to put together.

Being of the opinion that a quote to perform work is part of the overhead isn’t unreasonable.

Not even close to the same thing.

You may be on to something if i wanted a quote over the phone and he insisted on coming out to look at it and give the number in person, but none of that happened.

Na I just seem to remember stupid shit that doesn't matter for some reason.

Coulda swore that thread was in the bitch thread

I usually ask people what their bottom dollar is then go look at said item with at least that much money on me, I don`t ask them to hold onto anything I just tell them when i`ll be there and then start negotiating. I also hate when people ask me to hold onto things, I only do it if they cashapp or venmo etc me a non refundable deposit and a specific day i`m getting the rest.

Shitty, but he’s willing to risk you walking over $200, so the question is; are you willing to walk over that?

For the guys that do their dealing over the phone
More than once I have shown up and made a 'low ball' offer that was taken as an insult because they have been offered more
I usually follow that up with....but were they standing in front of you with cash?:grinpimp:

I now own a big dumb overpriced table and chairs. I'm not happy but the wife is.

I only ask people to hold something as long as it takes for me to get there. If it’s far away, I don’t want to drive an hour for nothing. I don’t ever bargain over the phone and I bring the asking price. If the asking price is too high, I don’t bother.

A local guy had a "Big Block 396/409" for sale last week for $275. The photos showed a bare block and two aluminum edelbrock cylinder heads that are obviously for a SBC. The heads have valves and springs, but the springs and rocker studs are all rusted. I thought maybe the heads would be worth picking up if they aren't cracked. I asked if I can come check the stuff out and he hemmed and hawed saying that he has to pick them up from storage, etc. I forgot about him for a week or so and then he sends me a message saying he relisted the items seperately. Now he wants $800 for the heads alone. Whatever dude, I was willing to take a gamble for a couple hundy, but certainly not $800. I have a feeling this shit is stolen anyway based on the fact that he didn't even know what he had.
