What's new

Seller raised the price for me today. :)

You paid an extra $200 to "talk it over with the wife" instead of sealing the deal and loading it up right then.

99% of the time a buyer who has to talk it over with a spouse is going to flake and was just wasting time to start with.
1/2 true.

I wanted to go home and measure again because I wasnt planning on chairs at end of table. I thought all 6 chairs would fit better on each side.

My wife and I looked at it together. I didnt want to buy it on the spot without 100% confirming our thoughts without the seller present. They were going to put their kids to bed so I thought I hd an hour to discuss and get back to them.

Then you had no deal, no money changed hands.

I disagree. We had a verbal deal. I said I have cash and I can bring it to you right now. They said to wait. It was a verbal contract they unethically broke.

As a seller I am typically like most of you and want money exchanged to hold. If I agree to price and buyer hasn't paid and then I get another offer I would tell originally buyer he must commit or I move on.

I'm not sure I could have done much more as a buyer in this scenario. I suppose I could have drove to their house again uninvited or pushed the money transaction.

I get that and would feel the same except thats not reality. Just makes him a man with no integrity.

OP you arn't wrong in feeling that way IMO since you had agreed on a price but nowadays dealing with Marketplace you have to treat every transaction on there like your dealing with an idiot... because you usually are.

You gotta know what you want, have the info up front, show up on time and have the cash and a way to move whatever your buying. Almost everytime I've deviated on that I've gotten burned on there.

You tried to get a deal. Someone else wanted the table more. :flipoff2:
yep. I've hit up a seller on something I really wanted and he told me there were 4 more people ahead of me....I asked if he'd tell them all to fuckoff if I showed up with another $500 (buyer was asking $5500)...I was outta town and couldn't make it till 3 days later. We did the deal later that week.

Money talks. Until you hand me yours, what I've got is still for sale to the highest offer.

The problem with that is, if I told them it was sold....the person offering an extra $500 would be a no show and go silent.

Show up first with the extra $500 and its yours.

I did sell a truck not long ago. The guy was like 14 hours away and sent me $500 to hold it. It did take him a month to show up (was scheduled for 2 weeks but he had a death in the family) but he showed up with the rest of the cash. :smokin:

It's up to the seller, but I'm not racing to buy shit. If you tell me whoever gets here first with the money gets it, I'm going to tell you to fuck off.
And you'd get a suck my balls reply....:flipoff2:

I've had way too many "deals" worked out for a no show. Fuck that....

your reply would fall on deaf ears because at that point I've moved on. I've made deals to meet sellers then they flake at the last minute, just because you are the seller doesn't make you special.

Oh I've had many issues with sellers also. I'm like, do you want to sell the damn thing or not.

I'll come get it right now. No...I have something to do. Ok, I'll come tomorrow. I'll have to get back with you.

Those get told to fuck off.

Am I an asshole if I no show and this was our last communication?
If I do decide to go I'll send a message before to confirm we are on.
Heck, she may have sold it already. I am not sure what she assumed by my reply. I certainly can't assume she thinks I agreed.

I would have replied back that I would pass on the higher price.

I agreed with price gouging. Supply/Demand. Karma got hit me fast.

FB Marketplace. Large Walnut kitchen table and chairs for $2000

Sunday: Item Listed
Monday night: Arranged visit to look at it. We both agreed we could not get it that night. I had cash but after seeing it I wanted to confirm a measurement and confirm with wife we wanted it. Got home, measured, then messaged them back and offered $1800. They said ok and asked when we could get it.

We then went back and forth. It was only 15 miles away and I was willing to drive there and pay cash in full and get it another day. They suggested Zelle. I had difficulty creating a Zelle account. I then said I can bring cash now, or tomorrow, or Wednesday. They were not available until Wednesday and said Wednesday was fine.

Tuesday night:
me "what time works for you tomorrow night.I am available after 6"
them "6:30 is good"
them "By the way, I have other people ready to get it for the asking price. Not to sound rude but I am going to have to be firm with the initial price"
me "ok"

That's where I left it. I sent an "ok" so they didn't think I was ignoring them.

I still want it but I'm sort of pissed they backed out on our deal. I agree cash never exchanged hands but that is 100% on them saying wait unitl pickup. The wife wants it. I may still back out out of spite. The alternative is wait for another used one or spend $4000-$5000 on new.
My quick answer is fuck him, move on.

worked a deal for a front end loader...guy was asking 2250, I offered 1750, he said 1800 and done deal.
this was one thursday evening, friday he sends his address, 3 hours one way. i agree to be there between 11-12 saturday.
i get there at 1115 and he says, i sold it last night for 2000, sorry. he could have at least texted to let me know before i drove there.

i accidentally took out his mailbox with my trailer as i was leaving, drug it 3/4 mile down the highway before it fell out from underneath.

I have found that casually getting their address at the time they accept the offer statistically reduces any fuckery on their part. Weird

My buddy who owns the local VCR market tells me that number is about 99.9%.

If they say that I immediately lowball or just block. And rate them one star.

Also Zelle is very iffy to use when you aren’t right there in person to load it.

This is why I do not haggle over the phone.

Wait to strike a deal face to face with cash in your pocket.
Depends on that one.

I'd rather someone waste less of my time in the phone if they want to be a cheap fuck vs having to meet them to tell them to fuck off.

Like had a $10k dump truck that a guy spent like 2 hours picking apart every little detail like it was a brand new $300k truck and not 40 years old.. and then was pissed to the point if shooting rocks arcross the yard when he tore off when I told him hell no to a $5k offer.
On the other hand have had people in and gone in 5 mins.

OP
threes can be found for free in any flavor for close to nothing
save another 2000.00by making your wife a table, and the value of it will be priceless to her

You missed a sale, I miss them all the time, shrug

you let that happen dude
give them reasonable time to look at it, when they get all picky, I remind them that they are looking at used stuff, I don't want to hear it, keep it a inside voice when you are done I will be over here come and get me

Yup. I got plenty of other shit to piddle around on while someone wastes their time expecting to find a golden nugget in a turd.

You throw the dude a counter offer or tell him to get lost? People standing in front of you are serious buyers, thats not to say some don't have their head up their ass, but they are a serious buyer.

Serious buyers get treated seriously. Tire kickers, phone hagglers, and time wasters don't get taken seriously.

I think intypically ask 3 questions when interested in a c-list item. You still got it? Whats the address of where you want to meet? When can you meet? If I'm not willing to pay asking, I don't waste their time. I don't ask for a deal until I'm standing in front of the seller.

If I were driving multiple states away, my tactics would likely change...but I haven't had to do that, yet.

exactly, they are there and actually showed up
if they bring a truck, or trailer, I take it they are serious
the distance they drove plays into it too

but I am not going to sit there and let them nit pick, but I will let them take their time to look things over. I will just go do something else when they are doing it

I had one guy drive a hour in traffic to buy a 50.00 gizmo that I found in the shed that I didn't need anymore.
He went all picky on me, and was a dick on top of it
I just took it, told him asked how traffic was, hour? that must have sucked
them told him that it wasn't for sale anymore, and tossed it in the trach in front of him
