What's new

Russia / Ukraine thread

1. Russia keeps land it gained.
2. Ukraine will not join NATO for 20 years min.

Why a 20 year timeframe? Why do we want to keep extending our guarantees of protection? Because let's be real, outside of the original agreement that's all we've been doing. What are all these pissant eastern European countries going to do for us?

Influence over a nation, if you think that’s not what’s already happening all the time with international politics I’ve got some ocean front land in Arizona to sell you.
I understand influence, but you stated for money, the US should endorse and allow Russia to rule over Ukraine. I can see staying out of the way, or not getting involved, but making a cash for invasion rights exchange seems a little extreme.

And, there's lots of waterfront property in Arizona. It's just not salty. :flipoff2:

Imagine having a foreign country help along regime change in your country just to get a leg up on a competing foreign country, and then that competing foreign country invades you, and you fight them for several years because you don't want to be ruled by them, and then the first meddling foreign country thinks they can just give you to the competing foreign country as a gift because it doesn't want to get involved anymore, so now after all your friends and family dying at their hands, you have to be part of that country anyway. Bet that would be awesome. :shaking:

Seems really important to Russia to have them NOT join. So that should get some consideration.

Because they're on their border. That's not hard to figure out. How do you honestly think we'd react to our adversaries forming defense alliances with our next door neighbors? The last time it happened it was called the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Why should Russia care if they're part of NATO or not if they have no plans on attacking them

Are you serious? Seriously, imagine our response if Canada or Mexico was trying to enter into a similar arrangement with Russia or China. Fucking pandemonium.
You're talking like Ukraine would be the only NATO country sharing a border with Russia. It isn't. Finland, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia all share a border with Russia and all are NATO members. Why didn't any of them get invaded? What makes Ukraine different? It's got resources that Russia would like to control and they were pissed they lost control of it in the last Ukrainian revolution.

Now you're taking us back to when this began.

It's all about the terrain. First 20 pages or so had videos and maps and elevations and break downs. Can't remember which so no link, but hopefully someone else remembers it as well and can say more about it.

Things have changed. Finland didn't become an member until 2023. Oh and Sweden joined too. All these countries that were on the fence said "fawk that" when they saw what happened with Urkaine.
