Russia / Ukraine thread

Before the war, it was widely accepted that Ukraine was the most corrupt country in Europe. Since the invasion now they've somehow magically become a bastion of democracy. It's laughable. They're grifting their asses off and we know it but we don't care because we are too. When I say "we" here I mean the leadership class.
Are you including Russia in that group?
Because if you expect me to believe that they are any less corrupt than Ukraine, or that at least half the problem at the start was that bribe money started flowing to the US and our allies instead of to Russia I will have a very hard time believing it.
Additionally, as I understand it, Ukraine has been working on rooting out corruption (as much as it has been possible) and corruption has been a way of life literally for generations, it's not going to go away in a year.

From what I understand, the average Ukrainian and the average Russian have no interest in this war continuing, but the Ukranians have even less interest in being part of Russia or losing part of their country.

No I'm not including Russia in that.

How are you understanding that Ukraine has been working on corruption? Is it the folks pushing constant war telling you that?

We had an extraordinary period where we almost had deflation, I don't think anyone can make a credible case that the money for Ukraine is causing inflation.

All those billions aren't really going to Ukraine. They're just being transferred to defense contractors and tacked onto the national debt. That's inflationary. Increased international shipping prices are inflationary. Food shortages caused by war in what is commonly called "Europe's bread basket" is inflationary in the global market. The shortages are very real. Is it causing famine? No. But it is causing supply/demand shifts on the global market. That's inflationary. Sanctions on Russia reducing supply in energy markets is inflationary. None of this stuff happens in a bubble.

So, you are only concerned about some corruption and you are ok with supporting other corruption?

No, I know people who have spent significant time over there "in country" talking to people all day and they talk to their friends who are still over there.

No. I'm not "supporting" either. I'm saying it's not our problem. Ukraine isn't in NATO. We have no treaty obligations toward them. Ukrainian territorial sovereignty isn't our problem. Sorry, not sorry.

Some of the money is going to defense contractors for sure. But a big chunk of it especially in the first year waa going to the Ukraine. BIG chunk of it. Billions

ETA
There has been a surge of defense contractor money because we have given away a decent percentage of our equipment, guns, ammo, missiles etc. now its time to buy more for God know what. I would hope its to keep on hand but it will probably go to another proxy war.

That mall is doing better than anything around me in Upstate, NY All you can buy here are swords, model dragons, vape and pot essentials… if they are even open at all.

Malls here can’t even afford to run the HVAC.
Yes. One of the ones around here was bought up by a mega-church for their campus.

They don't care where it goes. They just care that they get the contracts to produce it or to at least be middle men in the process. It's a gigantic grift.

That's the bitter pill the Ukraine flag wavers have to choke down. These people don't give a fuck about Ukrainians. They're FULLY willing to use them as cannon fodder in their proxy war to further their perceived chess match with Russia that we already won back in the '80s and to line their own pockets.

Looks nice and clean, and safe.
I take it Russia doesn't have feral packs of "teens" running around busting shop windows and stealing and assaulting in mobs like we do here?
I must have got lucky the last time I went to my local mall. All I did was bowl, drink beer, and eat some pizza. No assaulting or busted windows despite feral packs of "teens" running around taking selfies and also bowling.

No. Russians dont put up with that behavior. They have work camps for people who cannot behave.

On the other side of things, that kind of shopping mall is pretty rare in Russia. While almost any city in the US of any proper size has one or more shopping malls and a variety of other shopping stores, there are many fewer in Russia. (List of shopping malls in Moscow - Wikipedia) The people there are still getting a handle on how capitalism works and many do not earn enough to really do that kind of shopping anyway.

Your personal safety is generally orders of magnitude better in Russia as compared to the US. Well if you ignore the governmental abuse of the citizens that is. But worry not, the US is catching up on that in a rapid pace these days.

Glad to hear your local one is trash free. Too many others around the US deal with crime run amok, as evidenced by the videos and news reports of such that come out daily.

I have to admit I used your post to sneak a point in- my mall is only one in a thousand I the US. Picking just one isn't a good sampling of what all malls might look like here.

Just like one Russian dude's video of one mall in the entire country also isn't a good sampling of what's going on over there.

I've actually seen quite a few videos from various other showing off malls in Russia. All looked clean and orderly.

We can flip this script the other way. Can we find a video of thugs running through a mall in Russia and stealing shit or assaulting people?
Can we find 2 videos?

Because for the malls in the US, it would be pretty easy to find a hundred videos, and the hits keep coming daily.

I mean the abrams is tough... But nothing is indestructible.
May also have a little to do with who is operating it. I mean....a Bugatti is fast, but I'm still end up driving like a half-retarded, old-man with poor tunnel vision and a general apprehension to high speed. :homer:

The tank crews aren't the old dudes.

This one was running down the road, not really any "operator error" there.

Yeah....the 'old' was me being outshined in the metaphorical car.

I was meaning, maybe just a general lack of true handling of the M1. But, I guess, if it was just running down the road, maybe that analogy was misdirected, then.

I'll just climb my old ass back into my Mercedes and putt on down the road to the early-bird fish-camp special. 👨‍🦳

Gotcha, sorry, .my fault. Lots of constant talk about how old the Ukrainian fighters are and such.

There are many, but the old tank crew dude was as rare as the old tank mechanic or trainer was common
