What's new

Replace load bearing wall with beam. My house remodel.

Beam is up. Look at all the space we have for activities.

I was expecting some creaks and cracks as I removed everything and the beam supported it all but nothing has been heard. Everything is SOLID.

South End.

The only real purpose to go 6 wide on the 2x6 is to sandwich the beam on the top.

I did add angle iron brackets all over similar to what you see at the bottom here.

Shot striaght down to the basement floor. 2x6 column on 1st floor. I went with 2x8 column in the basement.

This pretty much wraps it up. Uneventful from here.

The beam is NOT tight up to the 2nd floor. There is a small gap that ranges from 1/4" to 1/2" from end to end. Nothing was level and the best option was to hang the beam and then use a string to individually level all the floor trusses from south to north end.

I used a mixture of simpson screws and nails. I intend to fill ALL holes but have not yet. Filling all holes is overkill as each hanger is rated for 3-5x the weight it will ever see.

The laser level worked AWESOME for cutting all trusses and ensuring a tight fit. I left a gap of about 3/16" total and the beam slide up perfect.

The last technical bit of info I have is on the columns. I debated steel vs PSL post vs building my own. In the end I learned building my own columns would be more than adequate and they would be straighter and stronger than a solid 6x6 etc... Simpson has some good documentation on building columns and their ratings. Download their "Fastening Systems Techincal Guide" and look for "Built up Columns" using SDW screws.

Wisconsin building code says a 6x6 10' long is good for 18,900 lbs.
