Project Iron III Oxide: A Snowball Effect

Well, not a hugely productive day, but the short amount of time I was able to break from farm-related chores and activities allowed me to do a final fit of the fenders and start mocking up the rear stretch corner guards. Fenders will be welded to them in the near future.
Also looks like the rocker knockers will need to be trimmed to accommodate the bigger wheel well opening given by the new front fenders. Not a big deal there. The best thing I noticed is I should be able to mount the new rocker knockers using the holes from my old Trail Gear rocker knockers

Ok, done with corner guard fitting. I could just bolt them on and be done but my OCD tendencies would NEVER allow that haha. Got the body lines right on the top side and had to trim the back door vertical line about 1/4". Maybe it was in the press incorrectly or something, I dunno.
Next step will be to get the fenders to match the fronts (Poison Spyder Defenders) and weld those on, hopefully parallel and level to the fronts.
I guess until I get those I can trim the rock rails and get those fitted and bolted up properly.

I snuck away for a couple of hours and did a little bit of mockup on the heep.

The rear fenders fit decent with the 5" stretched wheelbase. I am still going to have to trim the wheel well opening a little bit to allow good stuff. The rear fender will tie into the rocker guards once I get those trimmed and installed. The corner guards will bolt to the rockers as well. It will be a rather beefy area

I had to trim my rockers about 5" to allow for the larger opening on the front fenders. I spent a lot of time taking measurements and making adjustments until the body lines were to my standards. Starting to look like a jeep.
Next step, I need to get into my wheel well with a grinder and remove some material from the fender flange and the corner guard wheel well opening so the 37s will be able to stuff up in there without slicing the tread.

Thanks! I am enjoying the process and progress... but wish budget was no issue haha. I am having to take it slow and steady for that reason :lmao:

I need to get the brakes and things worked out so I can do some flex testing and start getting measurements for shock lengths and such. I need to get my rear outboard shock mounts welded next, I think.

Any progress?
It has been really crazy lately and like jumped in front of everything again haha. I am working on funding the next big jump (gears/lockers) with some side hustle haha. These fuel prices, inflation and things of that nature are not helping anything.
Im picking up a few comanches to fix up and flip on the side. The price was right and too good to pass up.

Well, well, well.... Look who showed back up haha.
I was able to fix up one of the comanches and make a decent profit so I am back to get some more traction on this project. The jeep is still essentially the same as one of the last pictures but with the tires a tad lower on pressure haha.
My direction for the axles is changing slightly though. I am leaning more towards going with Detroits front and rear rather than ARBs. I like the simplicity and "always there" feature that Detroits have, without the complexity of air lines, compressors, actuators and such that are required of the ARBs. If my tight trail turning radius suffers offroad, I think that is a small price to pay.
I am also considering boring out the spindle on the rear Dana 60 to run 35 spline shafts just to be done with it. The way I see it, the money I save on the ARB to Detroit change can easily offset (and then some) the cost of some alloy 35 spline shafts.

I also picked up 1980 CJ5 from a buddy. It has a AMC 360 with Howell injection, T176, D300, D44s front and rear with chromos and is sitting on 35s. It is wicked haha.

Glad to see some updates on this. This jeep is nice and simple, one of my favorite jeeps.
