WTF is this thing?

I've seen a lot of strange bugs living in Texas but this is a whole new one for me. Creepy looking motherfucker, that's for sure!!

While it is an Orb Weaver that's more specifically a Yellow Garden Spider. Pretty sure, would be more confident if I could see the other side of it. Just calling it an Orb Weaver is kind of like referring to a Suburban as an SUV, it's an SUV, but there are a lot of different types of SUVs. Yellow Garden Spider is a type of Orb Weaver. It's a spider, so yes it has venom that's what they do. It's probably not going to bite you unless you're doing something stupid, and it's not going to kill you if it does.

People frequently incorrectly call them Banana Spiders, I guess because they're yellow.

It's a wonder my parents didn't have me committed as a kid. I tossed a lot of grasshoppers into a lot of Garden Spider webs as a kid.

Get your kids in 4-H, that's where I learned A LOT about bugs. While I showed livestock, I also had Entomology as one of my projects. If the kids are interested (what kid doesn't like bugs?) they'll probably teach you too, whether you want to learn it or not. I still remember the look on my 8th grade science teachers face when I corrected him for referring to a Damselfly as a Dragonfly. He went to his Audubon book, and was visibly annoyed to find I was right. I might have been a smart ass, know-it-all, teenager.

Did the Robber Fly win? I hope so, that's bad ass!

Ya it did. Snatched the wasp out of mid air and then they had an MMA style grappling match on my table until the robber fly won and flew away with the dead wasp carcus. I read about how robber flies inject their prey with a toxin that liquefies its insides and it sucks it out for food. It's nasty and cool as hell all at the same time. I nerd right out watching shit like that.

Jewels says I'm a hippy, because if I catch spiders in the house I take them outside. That's not entirely true, I just take the roamers out. If there's a house spider on their web in an unobtrusive corner, I just consider them a roommate paying the rent by keeping the undesirables in check. Our old Keruig had an illuminated water reservoir, had a house spider named Gertrude that lived behind it and ate all the little gants and flies attracted to the light. Gertrude lived there for over a year.

Here's a recent cool one. This little lady was walking across the dining room floor headed towards our bedroom. Glad I found her before Jewels did. It's got to be tough to be a new mom with that many kids.

I've never left a Brown Recluse alive though.

I had a giant wolf spider? Come in the shop a couple summers ago and start spewing babies......

If that's an orb weaver, he must be on a diet. The weavers here are massive. Like Barcalounger big. :grinpimp:

One of our dark fishers in our basement. She killed a mouse :smokin:

S/He looks like Bob. Bob is the 3.5" spider on our front porch out in MO. I hope he's still alive when I get back out there. Spiders freak out my wife, but I just let 'em be unless they're dangerous.

Same. They take care of business. I leave them all unless they're a brown recluse.

Yeah, screw those little bastards. We have pretty big wolf spiders here, but the spiders I met out east would keep them as pets. :lmao:

Irish folklore~
If you wish to live and thrive, let a spider run alive-

I watched it trap and wrap that cricket earlier and it was very cool to see. Are they poisonous? Wifes friend called it a banana spider but she didn't seem to sure about that.

We also called them banana spiders. When i was surveying, we'd find big ones in the woods. Throw a lot of grasshoppers in there
