What's new

New Ford Duallys are 6+ months out?

the tech showed him the baby food jar with some water and diesel in it. truck had 17,000 miles and is a 19 model. he could not find any water in either of his tanks. he paid over 20k to get his truck out of the dealership.
I had the same situation with a co-workers truck over at AutoNation off I-20.
I got involved an told them we were going to come take a sample from the secondary filter, they started back pedaling and just suggested he file it on insurance.
We explained the results of this fuel test would be important for him to make that decision and they deciced to see if they could get it done under warranty, they did.

SO everyone is trusting of these new diesels?
I am coward, I will be going back to a gas engine.
CP4, $2 more per gallon than gas, DEF, are all why I went with the 7.3 instead.
I’ve only towed about 1,500 miles out of the 4,500 I’ve put on it so far and no ragrets yet

nope.

Buddies have had 2 newer GMC crap out on them and take quite awhile to figure out what's going on, emissions related. One was on the way up to a baja race and was quite the fisaco of getting alt tow rigs up to them and 4 days at the dealer. Not buying anything with Def in it.

Here's a $83k re-work claim from incorrect part number on a new camshaft. This doesn't include the loaner charges for 3 months.

I could be wrong but I thought Ram and GM went back to the CP3?
19-20 Rams are CP4, with a recall issued to replaced with a not CP3 CP3. Quick glance at another forum looks like 4 month backorder and order restrictions to each dealer for parts.
New 21+s have the new pump.

We have functional/counting water in fuel event code logging. Its pretty obvious this was a dumb dumb problem, not a sub par fuel system.
No matter the system though if the water content exceeds the ability of the separator you are going to pump water through the filter.

Right, but I'd think with the new truck complexity they either should have a giant red warning light or an automatic drain before it causes $20k in damage.

It would seem that a solenoid to drain when the water level goes from warning to alarm (perhaps dump it into the exhaust after the DPF?) would be advantageous...

My "Hot Take" is the factory filter interval is some odd 15k miles
I imagine Harry Homeowner doesn't do shit for said 15k miles besides fuel it and drive it.
Jiffy Lube doesn't drain it, neither does Harry.

That's a Loonng time to go if you get a high water fill-up of fuel.
There should be a sensor, I think there is. Does the light ever come on? I have no idea.

Ford's should have a light come on the dash to tell you when to drain the separator.

The maintenance schedule is kind of dumb. Check the Fuel/Water separator every month. Drain when needed or when the light comes on... How precisely does one check if they don't just drain it? So, is it drain it every month or when the light comes on?

There are guys on FTE who do it every oil change, do it every month, do it when the light comes on, etc... All of them have never had water, have had a ton of water or have had something in the middle.

You either trust the thing to do what it's supposed to do and tell you when you're supposed to do what you're supposed to do, or you don't. If the latter, whatever interval helps you sleep at night I guess.

I just found out this afternoon why there is a billet valve water separator valve available :mad3::mad3::mad3::flipoff:

i check mine every 2500, only seen evidence of some water once

ordered the replacement from ford, which will be in tomorrow. Ordered 2 XDP billets, one for me, one for dad.

I always get fuel from the same local station, got fuel up north on the VT/Canadian border this February and I froze up. Purge, purge, change filters, freeze ass off, purge, all better. That was what I wanted to be doing up there.

lots of times it is the cold fuel making the warm fuel already in the tank cloud up

Serious question, because it wasn’t a problem until it got really cold out 2 days after I fueled up(-15) When I fueled up it was 15* outside, truck had been running for 180 miles up the interstate. I think the fuel in the ground would be warmer?

depending on fuel turnover rate, the tanks might be as cold as overnight air temperature rather than the 55F that you'd think, being buried as they are

The internet warned me of breaking the OEM valve but it hasn't been a problem so far.

Have you had trouble with yours?

Just broke it. I guess i wasn’t clear enough with my first sentence. I’m glad it happened at home if it had to happen.

Order books are still open on 2023 SD trucks.

Ordered one this morning and got a confirmation email from Ford this afternoon.

F250 XLT LWB CC 4x4 Gawd Ziller, 4.30's w/ locker, goose prep and a couple other à la cartes.

Sure am gonna miss a heated steering wheel.:frown:

Got it for just under invoice (X Plan). Best I could do in this market. MSRP $58,775. Paying $56,065.90. X Plan discount $2,709.10.
Plus $75 dealer service fee, tax, tag, title

^^^ Nice.

I wish they'd either put the 7.3 in the 450 pickups, or allow the wide track front axle back in the 350's. That wide track axle is amazing. Damn thing turns like a fork lift.
I want the same thing.

But, you can get the 7.3 in a C+C 450. Which is probably what I'll buy if I ever get to the point of buying a new truck.
