What's new

Need a great flashlight on a budget.

Princeton tec apex pro is made in :usa::smokin: Might check that out, currently use stream light head lamps on my hard hat and a streamlight strion hl for edc for the past 5 years going strong. I work 800’+ feet in a mountain so if the power goes out I have to trust my lights.

How many hands do you have?

Convoy S2+ is pretty stout for the $16 I paid for it. Uses 18650 batteries which I robbed from an old laptop like someone else mentioned earlier.

TBH, I use a headlamp more than anything these days. I picked up a Black Diamond light 6-7 years ago that is still going strong. Best thing about it is being able to lock it from getting turned on accidentally by just holding the power button down for a few seconds while it is off. I keep one in the door of each of my vehicles now.

I have a bunch of S2's spread out in the house and in our vehicles. It is a great light. Speaking of headlamps, I just got a Sofirn SP40. I have a 18350 in it and it puts out a ton of light!

Milwaukee Search Light, $100, or $80 on sale sometimes at Home depot. I carry and use it everywhere with me.

I use it with my 9amp battery.

I would think that light gets hot and chews through batteries

Based on a picture?

Obviously 10k lumens is going to make heat, fortunately they usually have 5 modes and 1-3 is fine for most use.

It's funny how people are bringing up $20 lights like they compare :flipoff2:

My mom got me the big square one for xmas, it's a beast but I usually keep it with my tools, it's also huge. Some of these pocket lights will actually smoke it though. The m12 is a good light too and not super huge.

how does the m18 one work in flood mode as a work light?
kind of a two for one deal if it's a decen work lamp as well.

I'm curious which pocket light can do better than that? I don't mind getting one for home.

I love using flood mode for every environment, work, camping, working on vehicles, etc. I've used it in dusty, dirty, and sprinkling rain environment. No comment on rain/heavy rain or heavy humidity, snow for reliability/function.

It's definitely my last flashlight until Milwaukee comes up with bigger, better ones.

It weighs 5.5 lb with my 9amp battery. Haven't come across anyone else in hiking or camping that has brighter light than mine. But then again, mine is the bigger and more heavier than "average" flashlight. I could weight it with other battery if you want me to.

I prefer 9amp than 5 or 6amp battery because it has better balance weight feel to carry frequent(hike, camping)

Flood is amazing, it outshines any flashlight that hiker has when I come across them but I'm sure most don't want to carry anything over 1lb of flashlight.

Spot goes pretty far, beyond my eye can make out what I may see. Quickest way to detect any animal eyesight immediately for solo night hikes/camping. Since unlike previous joggers, I can't hear mountain lions. ;)

Flood mode, I can easily spot snakes, scorpions, mice, spiders.

Spot/Flood combo is something I rarely use but it can be handy for someone that needs both at same time.

It will remain in the same mode you left it on last, no need to switch mode when turning it back on.

Two button, power and mode.

I have previous generation without strobe. No comment about strobe.

Easy to have it upright or lay it down, it's taken several 3-4 feet drop without issue.

I might love it more than average folks because it suits me much more almost as if it's built for me. I'll just want a bigger/brighter of current version if they make one.

Most of the ones listed put out equal or more lumens. The range isn't as good on most of the pocket lights. The 2 I listed with a little larger lense diameter say they will go out pretty far. The fenix said over 3k feet range.

well at least someone at milwauke was thinking.

My use would be like 90% in the shop as a work light, 10% random shit outside in the dark.
not so worried about weight/size. Was just going to buy the m18 worklight, but the spotlight jam is only a few dollars more, and might be useful.

thanks for the review.

I have this one which I pretty much only use mounted to the 12 ga when camping. I like that it uses the 18650 battery and charges via usb. Yes it is all tacticool but I don't care about any of that, it does the job well.

But this is my main flashlight that I always keep handy. Super bright, great price, USB rechargeable. It has always worked when I ask it to and indeed, it does turn night into day.

I've been buying these Zonapa flash lights to throw in every truck, toolbox, etc. $10 for two, they take 3 AAA batteries or an 18650 (not included). They are bright and durable. The zoom/pattern isn't great but they are find for rolling around under the truck and it doesn't hurt when I lose one or leave it tucked under the truck before driving away

This is what I have been curious about. Swap in some high quality cells if needed.

I got one that looks pretty similar. For $25 I wasn't setting the bar too high, I mostly wanted it to leave in the kitchen and not get lost.

It is literally a spot light, like at ~20' the spot is probably about 6" in Dia, it does have a dull flood around that. Very strange but again $25. It does throw that damn spot far though, so I guess it does what it says.

the one I posted is a spotlight out the end, but also has a side light which lights an area up nicely without being too harsh. the side light is really nice when walking because it points down when you hold it by the handle and lights up the ground for you and the people behind you, without blinding anyone.
