Trying to sort out OD on the ramcharger I bought a while back because 4.56 gears and 35s don't play at freeway speeds with a 3 speed.

When I bought the rig I was told by the PO that the trans was a 3speed plus electronic OD, but that the switch or a relay or something had gone out. He lived in the hills and only used the rig for towing his boat down to the local fishing spot so never bothered to get it fixed.

Now I'm digging into it and I can't figure out what the hell trans I have. I believe it might be an a518, but I'm measuring the bellhousing to tcase flange to be only 32" and all my searching has said that should be 38" for an a518 or 35" for a 727 (https://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/attachments/mopar_trans-jpg.455778/)...

here is the casting on the driver side above the pan:

google search brought up this (https://bestremantransmissions.com/...atic-transmission-assembly-us150311ddg3o.html)

smooth bellhousing, which indicated 727/a518 and not 904/a500:

passenger side of pan with kick out, again making me think 727/a518:

trans mount:

in case it is important, the tcase is a np241 and the setup is mounted to a 360 that has been stroked to 408.

any help with an ID would be much appreciated. if it's legit a 3 speed I either need to do a r&p swap or find something with OD that will bolt in.

It's a '94-'95 46RH (AKA A518) with lockup converter. The part number can be seen in your first pic: 52119173

thanks. maybe it is because I searched for 'pk52119173' instead of just the numbers that only 1 source showed up.

That pic of the transmission lengths is for two wheel drive transmissions. The 2wd tail shaft is longer than the 4wd, that's why your measurements are off. Did you measure bellhousing to trans mount to see if it matched the pic? The gray plug with the three white wires will be what makes the OD and trans lockup come on and off. It's common in the Cummins crowd to put them on pressure sensors or toggle switches when they swap 47rh's into the earlier trucks (or when the TPS or shitty wiring finally crap the bed for the 518). If you're having issues with it coming on you can at least see if it even works by finding which wire controls which function and grounding it out when up to speed.

this may help too -

if the yellow plug has 3 wires it is both OD and LU - the center pin is 12v and the two outer pins are ground (front is OD, back is LU). The two ground(s) are activated by the PCM, but as mentioned can also be manually controlled via toggle switches, or other methods

this is the actual 3-wire solenoid and plug -

I figured it would be 2x vs 4x, but I couldn't find anywhere that listed 4x overall lengths. Didn't want to trust the trans mount measurement because it looked to me like the PO had modified it.

the PO told me that one of the rocker switches used to control the OD. at least now I can know which sensor/wiring to start trouble shooting.

If it has only one pressure switch on the passenger side and a rocker switch for the OD then I'd bet the pressure switch controls the lock up converter, or at least it's supposed to.

Duane if that is the case how does OD get controlled? Based on what I've been able to google it seems like you can set up the speed sensor to auto disengage the OD. speedo works but isn't 100% accurate, which I'm guessing was due to the swap to 4.56 gears. I'll likely have to dig into that.

any chance the pictures are working and you were able to see the one pressure sensor on the passenger side?

This looks like the pressure switch used to control either OD or lockup. It should only control one or the other. It should come on when the trans pressure reaches whatever pressure the switch is set to activate at. If you want to control both OD and Lockup by line pressure you would need a T fitting and two switches set just a little bit apart so they don't come on at the same time. As it sounds now you have one rocker switch, and one pressure switch. You need to chase the wires to and see which one is supposed to be controlled by what and how the PO wired it. Not sure about using the speed sensor to make the OD work, but you never said what year your RC was so if it didn't come from the factory with OD it may be a little more complicated. Maybe someone else can chime in about that. My 93 w250 has a 47rh swapped in and I just have the OD and lock up wired to two toggle switches. When I get up to speed I flip the switch to go into OD, then the one for lockup, and when I slow down I flip them back off. I know if I forget to turn off the OD it will still down shift and upshift, but it will skip third completely and go strait to and from OD. If I forget to turn off the lockup then it tries to stall out the engine until I remember lol.
