What's new

Modern 3/4t Gassers

:flipoff2:

I also own two 6.2 powered trucks (2011 CCLB, 2014 RCLB) and they get nowhere near high teens with me paying for the gas and a light pedal. I am not buying the consistent high teens MPGs out of 6.2 trucks.
I have a 6.2 and it gets 13 empty. Towing it does 5-8 depending on how hard it’s ran.

old man has a 2016 F250 CC short bed 4x4... 13.5mpg and thats old man driving too. With 3.55s Ive been less than impressed. Id lock out 6th and get the EXACT mileage letting it sing in 5th running empty. We're getting the 8.1L burb (4.10s) dialed in and it gets 11.5mpg and will run away and hide from the Ford and never kicks down when you mash the pedal... it just goes.

The 6.2L had a bunch of unwarranted hype. The V10 trucks are better.

It ought to run away from it. 8.1 minus 6.2 is almost 2 entire metric displacement units.

About a decade of tech between them as well. on paper the 6.2L should prevail.

6.2L -> 385HP/405TQ
8.1L -> 320HP/440TQ

In the real world, it doesn't

Had both, V10 3v and now a 6.2. V10 had 4.30 and the 6.2 has 3.73 otherwise the same exact truck. They feel about the same, 6.2 gets 1 or 2 mpg better. Both have unnecessary amounts of power to do average tasks if you don't worry about what the tach is doing

A coworker has a 22 F350 SRW CCLB with the 6.7L and he says that his friend with a similar Chevy 3500 SRW Diesel (not sure on year, but less than 5 years old), both towing big 5th wheel campers, he claims that his truck has a significant edge on power (walking away in any kind of hills) and while it gets similar fuel milage, his friend's Chevy has a small fuel tank while he has the biggest tank available in a F350, so he has a lot more range as well.

That's also probably gears. I've driven two identical GM trucks with different gear sets, and the butt dyno difference between the two was huge. The 3.xx highway gears feel like a dog after you've driven the 4.xx

Pulled a dual tandem 40' goose with power dove (i.e. heavy ass trailer) loaded with a nissan pickup and 80's 6.9 4x4 f250 yesterday with my 2023 7.3. I'd guess I had probably 18-20k behind me. Truck didn't break a sweat on the 3 hour trip home and got 9mpg. I have a 4.30 gear in the rear, which I think helps a ton with the gasser

If your definition is "never downshifts from 4th" then yes.

I've towed with both a 6.2L F-250 and an 8.1L 'burb (with and without an RV cam). 8.1 is a torque monster, but will lose on the grade and from the line to the 6.2 every time...

Because the 4L80E's ratios blow goats. 6 speed in the Ford fixes a lot of torque issues, and Ford definitely programmed it to use the fuck out of them. That ECU absolutely will not let you wood it in 6th, or 5th, or 4th unless there just aren't any RPM left in that ratio. At least in tow/haul mode... The 6.2 has nearly twice the gearing advantage of the Suburban, and 2nd is nearly the same ratio as the Suburban's 1st.

Suburban speed in each gear at 5,000rpm with 33s:

81

F-250 6.2, 5,000rpm:

If you want it to just chug a handful of OD as much as possible, yep, 8.1L. Any time you're leaving top gear, Ford will beat it. 8.1L in the Silverados with the Allison is a completely different story. 8.1 'Burb is cool since you can haul 7-8 people though.

I've loved my PW ever since I got it in 2011. I'd rather have the 6.4 and 8 spd but my 5.7 with 4.56 gears is working just fine. I regularly haul with it.

Just pulled a 30ftr with a JKU and a CJ and it surprised me how well it did.

I also wheel I a bit so that's why I chose a PW so that may be a consideration.

Mileage wise it stays around 12 unloaded.

CJ on an 18ft car hauler at around 6000 lbs is 9mpg

Add 10k for my new trailer and a JKU on 41s and I got 7.3mpg.

That's not far off from diesel especially when you figure in the higher gas and vehicle prices.

Super helpful, thanks. One of the reasons the PW is worthy of consideration is that I run command for our Search and Rescue team and operate out of my own vehicle. Being able to softroad a bit is nice, especially in the snow.

The wife has decided that we need a bigger house so I might just be stuck in the Tahoe for while.

Might be worth joining power wagon registry forum if one is highly considered. There's a member who regularly posts PWs up for auction coming from state parks, border patrol, game warden, etc.

So if you're running a S&R gig those might already have some gear upgrades that would be handy for you.

How much that tlr set you back?:smokin:

I think that IS a good deal with today's clown money.
Deal, yes, I agree...

I would just rather have got it for a steal tho! Like the Rubicon running gear that's going under my LJ. I've literally got 500 in rubi axles and Tcase. That thing has become my budget wheeler for sure. I've found all kinds of steals on parts for that. Only thing I'm paying msrp for so far is trusses, brackets, cable shifter.

4.5" long arm, thick wall hiem steering, gears/shafts, the LJ itself has all come at 50% or better the going rate.

I so wish ford would reintroduce a 6.2 or 7.3 v8 gas 3/4 ton tow rig....makes my pants tight thinking about it.

Remember back in the dark ages of 2014ish when there was only a few grand spread between the cheapest and the most expensive engine?

I bet they would start at $75k for the base model and people would pay over MSRP for the privilege to own the first ones to hit the lot. :homer:
Expedition Max XLT starts at $62, so I'd say dead nuts on that.

Ecoboost and specific packages to get 9k vs 6k tow rating.

Why are all the XL's on dealer lots coming with 6.8's?
It's literally the only engine you get in a straight XL truck. Mine is an XL, but I wanted the 7.3 so I had to get the Stx package, which got LED reflector headlights, painted bumpers, carpet, and a bunch of other stuff. It also added like 9k to the truck. I spent a long ass time digging through the build your own truck options to get the best bang for my money. Ended up under 60k with plow prep, gooseneck prep and pro power
