What's new

Modern 3/4t Gassers

Tow haul
Normal
Eco
Snow
Offroad

I think
Mine calls it eco, tow haul, normal, slippery roads, and off road. Slippery roads puts it in 4 high, off road puts it in 4 high and locks the rear axle. Plus I’m sure it all shifts differently.

Thought I'd bump this with some anecdotal experience.

21 6.7 f350 Tremor 3.55 Platinum vs. 22 7.3 F250 Tremor 4.30 Lariat. Gas has Pedal Monster and an exhaust (bought it used...)

just got back from 2000 miles towing. 1/2 with empty car trailer (~2500 lbs), 1/2 loaded (~7000-7500... about 500# in the truck). Same route that I last towed with the 6.7. Only difference is which leg the car trailer was loaded.

Mileage... 6.7 got about 15 w/ empty trailer, 13-13.5 loaded. 7.3 got about 11.5 empty trailer and 9-10 loaded. All at ~75mph.
Power... 7.3 is just fine... but the 6.7 spoiled me. Much more relaxing to tow in the 6.7.
Acceleration... 6.7 - no contest. Much better experience in the diesel.
Braking... 6.7's exhaust brake was a spoiler. I HATE the compression braking program in the 7.3 tow/haul mode. I don't need the trans shifting to 3rd and pegging the limiter... let me use the brakes. Additionally, the trans does NOT like to upshift after it's chosen to down shift... it'll stay in whatever gear it's downshifted two until it damned well decides it's ready to upshift... That's annoying AF to me.
Daily driving... 7.3 all day. It "feels" smaller and lighter... losing that extra ~800 lbs on the front is very noticeable. I did miss it a bit while towing.

Overall... If it wasn't for the CP4, I'd have kept the Diesel. The 7.3 is a great engine... and I'd say is much more comparable in experience to my 2016 6.7 than to the 21.

If I was buying again... I'd probably go gas... But if I was regularly towing over 7500, I'd buy a 6.7 and invest in a CP3 conversion and call it done.
Appreciate the update!

I recently bought a 2020 7.3 F350 for an offroad ambulance project for wildland fires. Gonna be using that as a test bed for a few different things, but I'm going in for a spine surgery on Friday and won't be able to build it for a few weeks.

Pulled 2500# empty trailer from mid-Tn to VA yesterday. Got 12.4 mpg, per liometer… did not use cruise at all.

Pulled about 7000-7500# back. Liometer landed at 11 mpg mixed.

Power is fine. It’s really not bad at all.

But I will say this… I wish I had kept the diesel. It was just an easier tow… less down shifting, exhaust brake was great for TN downhills. I really do not like the 10-speed’s tuning… its attempt at compression braking is just annoying in a gas truck.

With fuel prices as they are, and the mileage delta, diesel was cheaper to drive… inclusive of def. Exclusive of oil changes.

I do think that having the flow master exhaust on this truck is annoying.

May as well get a 13 speed at that point, then, we'll fuck it, 18 :flipoff2:
Agreed, but more cause it'd be fun to drive.

Not sure why a fairly high horsepower to weight pickup with wide rpm range really needs 10 gears.
My 5500 is a 6 speed auto and never felt it needed more.

Shitload of gears is from yesteryear with maybe 250-300hp pulling 40+ tons on diesels with rpm range of ~1500rpm

Actually I sorta lied.

The 5500 has tow mode which makes the shifts almost "normal" instead if mushy hot dog shit BUT locks out overdrive.. at least 6th, maybe 5th?, so doing 65 it's near redline.
Hell even in 6th 65 is around 2400rpm. It definitely wouldn't be a good truck in a 75+ mph speed limit area.
But that's less a gearing issue and more a programming thing.

The 6.7 6 speed seem like the sweet spot? I’m liking mine. I’ll double down on the exhaust brake! Such a Good addition to these trucks.

IMHO, yes. I loved my 16 6.7/6-speed. Never should have gotten rid of it. oh well.

I tried fairly hard to find a 2016 because I like the interiors of the those better than I do the alumaduties. But at that time everybody was hanging onto their stuff because of the leftover Covid issues. Now I have my pick of trucks again but too little to late

100% agree on interior comments. Hate the cup holders in the alumaduty

I currently have both interiors and the only thing I like about the 16 more is the ac vents. I don't ever like air blowing at my face and the aluminum vents have shit for range compared to the 08-16.

It's also crazy how much more room the aluminum crew cab has between the front and rear seats. Although the 99-16 cab is a bit wider.

Holy crap. Spot on. I didn’t realize until Saturday how bad the vents are.

I also miss the side pockets on the 16- center console. Held paper very well. Put all receipts in there.

The alumaduty f’d that up.

Dammit… I miss my 16

I should add, I haven't been in an 08-16 with a console in a long ass time.

Either way, the extra rear leg room is worth it by far with 3 kids.

I much like the 17-up cab over the previous, I still own and use an 01'

In addition to what has already been stated 17-up cab seems taller, rear doors seem to open farther
