I have always left a step out and just C-clamped that strait edge to the disk, why drill those holes ?

Thats the hard way.
I put the front axle on stands, insert a very short wood screw (1/4” long) into a tread sipe on each tire, measure the distance between the screw heads at the front of the tires then rotate 180 degrees and measure at the back of the tires.
