Local rancher shoots dog, public outrage ensues

this dog was shot this morning when it came up to the front door...

fluffy winter coat coyote, cute

around here they're way scared of people, you will not see them within 100yd
you live right next to a city where they get used to people not shooting at them or what?

Shooting one of them is a big fine even though they run through everyone’s property without permission.

What kind of commie land do you live in?
Out here in CA there are signs everywhere that if your dog goes onto property with livestock it gets shot. Everyone knows this. No cop would ever have to call his supervisor because he passes 20 of those signs everyday.

Go figure. CA has more private property rights than Iowa...

They have to actually be posing a threat to the livestock. Not just on the property with them.

I believe the rule is different for hunting dogs even in California.

The rancher is clearly within his 'rights' to shoot the dog. But that doesn't make it necessary. We weren't there so I don't know if the exchange was as reported by the dog owner... so, who knows. Trespassing really pisses you off as a landowner, I have caught folks on our place and wanted to harm them. Always sketchy people and that far away from town, no help coming if things go sideways. The trespasser is completely in the wrong and should get a fine for trespassing (whatever the local law supports).... but, having dispatched many coyotes in my life, and knowing how dogs can hector the shit out of cattle and cause them stress, I'd still have to think twice before I took the dog. I'm not a fan of digital vigilantism, of course I have participated in it here when there was some asshole ripping off a pirate, but the evidence is usually clear on that. I probably would not have shot the dog, but, the guy was within his rights, it is just too bad, everyone loses on this one.

I have a neighbor (about 150 acres of hunting ground, he doesn’t live there) that has shot over 15 stray dogs in the last 12-15 years. I’m not saying it’s right in his case, but those stray dogs would have been a minimum of 5 miles from their home, or were dumped off because they weren’t wanted. That’s a lot of dogs not being taken care of. He’s backed off in recent years because now we have guys running coyote dogs with tracking collars through the neighborhood. Shooting one of them is a big fine even though they run through everyone’s property without permission.

I think people that haven’t grown up in a rural area don’t realize how often dogs actually do get shot and nobody knows or cares.

When i tell people i carry a gun in the woods to protect me not from bears or hogs, but mostly from stray dogs they look at me funny.

People have no idea how many are running around out there. Of course they wouldn't know that, they dont live in the real world.

"Dog people" are quickly becoming my most hated group of people. :shaking:

Years ago a somewhat funny guy that wrote columns in a Newspaper in Summit County CO pretty much got crucified for writing in the paper that if a loose dog bothered you to kick it. He left the area later, kind of funny. I agreed with him but you're not going to win an argument with Karens. I went after a loose hound dog that was chasing after a few vehicles I was with out 4 wheeling with a big stick. That dog was nuts. If there had been 2 like it I would have got back in the truck. Gave me a real feel for what am escaped convict would experience being tracked down by big dogs.

What’s your definition of threat? Getting ready to bit a cow on the ass or just running around loose like a looney tune spooking live stock?

Personally, I shoot strays immediately if they don’t have collars. If they have collars they get a pass unless they are mean. We’ll contact the owners if they have tags, and run them off if they don’t.

To answer your question about definition of threat, here is what Iowa law is:

351.26. Right and duty to kill untagged dog

It shall be lawful for any person, and the duty of all peace officers within their respective jurisdictions unless such jurisdiction shall have otherwise provided for the seizure and impoundment of dogs, to kill any dog for which a rabies vaccination tag is required, when the dog is not wearing a collar with rabies vaccination tag attached.

CREDIT(S)

Amended by Acts 1961 (59 G.A.) ch. 193, § 9; Acts 1994 (75 G.A.) ch. 1173, § 33.

351.27. Right to kill tagged dog
It shall be lawful for any person to kill a dog, wearing a collar with a rabies vaccination tag attached, when the dog is caught in the act of chasing, maiming, or killing any domestic animal or fowl, or when such dog is attacking or attempting to bite a person.

Yeah, those who live near parks in the 5 boroughs & Long Island will tell you that packs of "wild dogs" roam the area. Believe it or don't-

I think this is the right approach 100%. In this case, these weren't strays and the owner was right there... which is why it is even a discussion. I'd have let the guy have it, get his dog, change my codes and make sure everyone in the trades knew about this guy.

A few years ago there was a pack of 5+ wild dogs running about a 10 mile radius area. They were mean as fuck. Over time they all got shot. What people don’t realize is stray dogs in a pack like that are not like coyotes. For the most part yotes will avoid human interaction. Wild dogs don’t give a shit and are not scared of humans. They’ll come right at you.

Every couple years a pack of wild dogs kill someone near remote Indian reserves way up north. I'm talking about isolated reserves with no roads in or out, surrounded by lakes and heavy forests. A lot of reserves have a yearly cull where a bunch of residents get together for a couple days and shoot the strays.

How is it up there? Here the Rez dwellers are the reason they have packs of strays running around. They get dogs and never get them fixed while leaving them to run around and breed uncontrolled.

Pretty much the same thing. Dogs are neglected and they pack up to hunt for food. Everyone of them is a Heinz 57.

There's people bringing younger Rez dogs south all the time for adoption. I know a few people who've had adopted Rez dogs and they've all been great pets.

There are a lot of people that like dogs more than humans, for arguably good reasons.

Being a dog person has nothing to do with it.

I'm a dog person. I like my dogs better than most people. I also had one of my dogs get out and was shot by a neighbor. It sucked because a tree fell down on my fence. I do not blame my neighbor. While my dog was friendly to people, he was not to other dogs. He was 140 lbs. and was attacking his dog. (On his property) I understand and hold no ill will. I would do the same.

I’m talking about irrational people here. Not just dog people.
