Interesting Craigslist finds

Not really. I have a M715 with one ton driveline and 37s, that probably weighs more than that Suburban. It's not a rocket, but it's not lacking in power at all. It is surprisingly smooth, unless I lug the engine.

Your frame looks like it moves more than the suspension? Or am I missing something

I know . But a 4wd suburban is a lot of vehicle for a four cylinder to haul around .
Especially a four cylinder that’s the noisiest shakiest diesel ever made .

Not much better than the 6.2 diesel it came with .

4bt's are currently very overpriced and I would not look at one at the current price levels. However, one will have no problem moving a full size vehicle like a Suburban. Set up right and they will move a 1 ton truck at highway speeds with a good load on them. I had a dog slow 6.2 and it isn't the same thing as a 4bt at all.

The biggest single factor in seat of the pants satisfaction is gearing. Not using a gear calculator or putting the engine behind some chity gasser slushbox is a recipe for certain sadness.

I tell people that driving a 4BT is like driving a big block with a tiny carburetor. Sure, it doesn't have the top end, but where 99% of the driving occurs, torque is immediate. With these engines, you also want a transmission with small RPM jumps between gears, which is what I would improve in mine. A modern 6 speed auto would be very sweet for an engine like this.

About the swivel frame, here is the build thread for mine.... Before Photobucket pulls the plug on the photos.

I would be head asshole at the TP with this thing.

I was gonna say I've seen these at Hollister before for some power wagon weekend and low and behold in the old obstacles coarse area. I'm not sure on the age with that huge camcorder. My favorite of all the weekends for Hollister is syncro de mayo.... something about hippies destroying over priced vans.
