Inexpensive New Off-road tires

Ive got maybe 100 miles on em now, and theyre pretty smooth and quieter than i thought theyd be. I opted for bead balance instead of lead weights and they cruise nice up to around 70, havent gone much faster than that with them yet.
 
I have patagonias. I am not a fan, would not buy again. Traction offroad is not good in AZ rocks, and they wear incredibly fast on the road. I have maybe 10k on them and they are worn about half way already. They are about 4-5 years old at this point (I hardly ever drive the jeep) and not rotted or super hard, so there is that going for them. They are really quiet, but don't hold balance well either. For a couple hundred more I wish I would have just bought better tires.
 
I've got the thunderers on my PW in 35 and they've been pretty good. Have wore great with regular rotation.

I do like the look of the MC xtreme better especially for a trail rig but they only are a 37 at largest I see.

Seen the gladiator x comps in 40" flavor but they look a bit blocky to me so idk. Haven't pulled the trigger on 40s yet. Plus there's a set of used mud hogs in 39 I've got my eye on.

Anyone know of these "other brand" choices in 40+?

I'm searching out 42s for my crawler so options are limited. I wanted 42 sticky treps, but they're listed at $1600 ea :lmao::barf::lmao::barf::homer::barf:

Milestars are $600 ea and I'm semi familiar with them. Not exactly excited to have to go 20s but not the end of the world. Maybe JR4X or woody may know if a 17" version is coming?

The one I'm more curious about is the gladiator x comp mt @ $569 ea but for 17s


specs(load index) look like they'd be a little lighter than the pats. I'm curious about tread compound though, lot of guys saying the smaller ones wear quick, which could be a good sign the tread is soft. Anyone running these in 37"+?

41 irok radials are also in this price range, although I've always liked them for snow, they seem to suck in rocks and pop easy.

They won’t have a 42 for a 17” wheel out in the next year or two. Martin talks about it but it’s a long way out time wise if they get it done at all. The sidewall stability just isn’t there with their current carcasses if I understand correctly

So funny because not that long ago 44s and bigger were common with a 15 :laughing:

I even remember big dumb tires guys talking about interco coming out with a 54 for a 17 :laughing: which is the same sidewall as a 42 on a 5" wheel :lmao:

42 is a tipping point for 20s for me, it's probably just fine, not a whole lot different than a 40 with a 17. I'm more just wanting to keep options open for other tires. Ie: cheap stickies for sand hollow or hammers trips. Are used 42 reds becoming common yet? :laughing:

Have you ever had a front row seat to a comp course and watch the guys on 42 Treps VS 42 krawlers? They aren’t the same, the Treps are tripping over themselves tying up in knots at the same pressure. Whereas the Krawlers are as stable as can be. Gonna double down on the :lmao: used Krawlers sell for new prices because you can’t get them new half the time.

Depends on use obviously, I agree with everything you said.

I like to do legit snow wheelin so more sidewall can help. I'm not saying I want 42s on 15s. But I think 17s aren't too bad for a 42.

Treps vs krawlers is also bias vs radial. Not to mention 2 very different tire designs. I'd bet the trep guys have to run a lot less psi to get those tires to move under those tiny chassis. I know you know all this also. I still say it's not as cut and dry as 17s vs 20s.

Either way, I don't think pat coming out with a 17" version would be a bad move. Let people decide if they want to jump to 20s or not.

What about the other bfgs? Are the 42 kr3s catching on yet? Slawson had them on his trail rig, but I haven't seen them anywhere else. Hmmm, maybe they're kr2's.... :confused:

42/17 MT02's are easily a year out....maybe two...maybe longer :) I agree that the 42/20 is a far better sidewall ratio....there is less sidewall on a 42/20 than there is on a 40/17.

42/20 MT02 DOT's are available now. I have loved mine. TX, CA, UT and WE Rock (UT, NM, CO). I'd argue I have more wheeling days over 10 months on my first set of 42's than most people would in 5 years....flipped them twice, burned the shoulders down to the skins. The current set just went back on after a few weeks of comparing the MT01 Black to the MT02 DOT to the new MT02 sticky #orangecrush

42/20 MT02 sticky #orangecrush are coming late summer. I should have my test set in May (I hope). I kept the test set of 40/17 MT02 sticky, and have been impressed. Low 50's for durometer, so we'll see how quick they wear. I'm stalling for warmer weather to put them back on and get more trail time. Stupid weather here has been annoying...

The black labels were rumored to be a "mild" sticky. Are they available as mt02's or just the soft sticky? My rig is multi purpose, so I'd like the best performance I can get, but also don't want to burn them up driving a few miles here and there on the street.

I think they are exactly that. A good middle ground, streetable, trailable, all around tire available in big sizes.

I have the 40x17 black labels on my crawler. If you expect them to be a krawler or a trepador your going to be disappointed. If you want something better than an Irok I do not think you’ll be disappointed.

Even dot would be fine, as long as it's not toyo mt compound, :laughing:

I will run MT02 DOT's over the earlier MT Black....IMO, they are a better compound, even tho they aren't quite as soft. The MT02 DOT fits in between the old MT and the old Black. The improvements make it worth it. NO, there will not be a "mid" sticky compound, the MT02 #orangecrush is about 15 points softer than the MT02 DOT.

BFG is the only manufacturer using an open cell rubber.

There are two compounds for the first gen MT. DOT and Black. The Black was marginally softer than the DOT.

There are two compounds for the MT02. DOT and Black (code named #orangecrush). The MT02 Black is 15ish points softer durometer than the DOT (per my EBay durometer dohickey) The MT02 is 2mm thicker in the base rubber, slight tread redesign, new/improved carcass, new factory (Vietnam), added silica to the compound. Plus some other changes I forget.

In all cases, the tires have DOT markings. The Black labels have a NHS stamp as well.

IMO, the sidewalls are as bit stiffer than the Reds...hard to tell tho without running them on identical vehicles (or a tire swap, which is planned this spring). I run about the same pressures as the guys on Reds. Currently 7psi for tomorrow's cooler/wetter conditions. I usually bump to 8 for warmer weather.

The Nitto is KOH focused, so the stiffer sidewall is critical for at-speed survival. Same with the KR2/KR3. They work killer in the desert conditions and the tread is sticky enough to work on the rocks, but the flex/control isn't there. I haven't run any of them, but have been on the trails with quite a few vehicles that are. The MT Baja Boss has oddities with the smaller center blocks and tread squirm...works well in some spots, but I've not been impressed with them at Sand Hollow.

Snow never likes solid tread blocks, sipes are what works. Of course, it also depends on the snow....wet, compacted, fluffy, icy, etc. The Milestars should work well, but I haven't done any snow wheeling with them. Cold/wet weather and open cell rubber is not a good combo tho.

At the end of the day, the driver is likely of more importance than the tire. Knowing the car, it's capabilities and limitations, and understanding what it takes to push the package to the limits is the key. I've run a lotta different tires in almost 35 years of wheeling....hell, I still miss the Swamp Things I had on my FJ40 in 1990....

So, I bought them anyway. Tossing them on my '98 Cummins. I'll let you know if they suck (I'm counting on it, that's why I got 5 so I'll have a spare when I ruin one:laughing:).
I will say the sidewall seem stiffer than the typical asian cheap tire. Fingers crossed.

And shit, I only get a 30% discount at the employee store after they mark it up 33%. :flipoff2:

And fwiw, I been into rock crawling since 1998, never ran coopers on a crawler until 2017. :laughing:
 
Date code on these tires is “4721”. I guess those container ships in Long Beach finally got unloaded. :laughing:
Made in Thailand FWIW, seems most of the cheap tires I’ve bought in the last 5 years come from there.

A co worker years ago put a set on his cummins and they were gone pretty quickly. I've yet to see an mt other than toyo really do very well on a diesel.

Used to, haven't since... uh... 16ish? 18? Hell I can't remember. We built all pro-comps since they started in the 90's, then lost the contract. For the life of me I can't remember who got it, but I'd recognize it if I heard it. :laughing:

I may swap the Dick Cepek/Mickey EXP's off my V10 and put them on the diesel, then toss these on the V10. Now that I have a diesel for the first time in forever I should probably set it up with a more highway friendly tire for longer trips and the V10 is more likely to end up off road anyway.
I don't know how much better this will make the tires hold up as the V10 is only about 300# lighter than the Cummins but it may help them live a while. That said, I'll probably run the V10 on more rock. If these tires hold up to that (I've had and seen a bunch of tires lately get holes poked in them by gravel when the rock drives itself through the tire to the cords, most recently on a Hankook Dynapro MT2 :barf:) I'd call them 'good enough for the price.

My expectations are low, hence why I may swap them over to the V10. Agree with diesel trucks (almost all of them it seems) eating tires.

I will say that if you are speaking of Dodge specifically, most people don't replace the 4 link bushings as its hard to know when they are bad unless you pull them (unless of course they are blown clear out) and the alignment being fucked up along with the weight of the engine ruin tires pretty quickly. I'd bet half of the bad rep for death wobble/steering issues on Dodge 4 links could be attributed to this. It's one of the first thing I look at anymore on these trucks, they are neglected alot.
