What's new

Hard hats

Sigh.

I knew it was a matter of time before they figured out some other heavy shit to add to my fucking hat.

First it was the blue flashy light on the back, then the wrap around reflective condom, then it wasn't heavy enough so they required earmuffs (in case you needed double hearing protection).

Then they made it mandatory to wear in all vehicles (and a seat belt too).

I looked really hard online to find something saying that hardhats aren't designed for vehicle collision, or that they increased injury chances by reducing clearance to the roof. No bueno.
start going to the doctor about your neck injuries

get you summadat mailbox money

The number of people here defending dumb safety bullshit that doesn't make sense in a lot of the situations in which it's implemented as "rules are rule" and similar is too damn high.

Y'all are soft.

I personally think the chin strap helmets are a good thing because I hate that the old style helmets were prone to falling off if you were crawling around doing shit but it's the principal of the matter and the guys who mostly stand around or operate things that drive should be pissed off over the dumb rule.
Anybody should be pissed at any rule where there is no need for a hard hat.

I get bitched at for standing on a roof with no hard hat. If something was to hit me in the head it would need to come from space. That shit is retarded.

Same In a parkinglot with no overhead equipment,

They have to get through implementing proximity kill switches on mobile equipment and all the silica shit first.

I don't like chin straps but I give it less than 5 years before they are mandatory.
The prox has been out for a while. It's been mandatory on miners for a few years

Company I did a lot of work for has blanket policy, hard hats on site at all times. Everyone is very realistic about it as long as you're following OSHA but they've got one VP I've known since I was a kid that's full autistic about it to the point he'll come over and tell you you need a hardhat on in your truck if you're sitting in it. :shaking:

I've parked just over the line off site for lunch on a number of jobs because of that guy.

We addressed the chin strap issue last year, the guys are over it already and using them.

This years ask from the Safety guys are:

Hi vis hardhat cover to designate the signal person. I can agree with this.

I hope the new glove requirement save someone's finger, because they are not cheap.

My issue is when we get to a jobsite and they inform us of the above and beyond OSHA safety regulations enforced on that job by the GC.

100%

I work with most of these GCs and they do not give 2 fucks about some subcontractor making a stand about PPE, they will move on to the next guy or open up a subsidiary to self perform the scope and steal your employees.

I was an employee at 2 of them.

We just put in a couple to test last month. The hard rock underground mine down the road was just installing them last year after a personal transport got ran over and killed two guys. So far the big surface mine near mine hasn't even looked at them.

I'll have to ask my sister if have them at her underground mine.

It's not too problematic, but it can be a pain if it messes up. The system (Matrix brand) uses magnetics to locate you. Two things that affect magnetics are steel an electricity. A miner is a 130k pound machine that runs off of 1000 volts, add in hog panel on the top and the system gets less effective.

We only use them on miners though. Peabody has them on haulage equipment tool

That's a painfully fucking obvious strawman. You fixing to move to the southwest? :shaking:

When you see the safety person's boss tell them their safety person is an ass and costing them money for no benefit. Throw a line item on the bill.

Don't just bend over and take dumb management decisions quietly.
WTF are you rambling about. You’re a little out of touch on this, that’s not exactly how it works any more.

best get that mrna
I do a lot of hospital work with several of the companies on that list. Hospitals were requiring the jab for construction workers on their campus.

These GCs basically walked us through getting religious exemptions for everyone. Even multi billion dollar evil corporations have some people with common sense working for them sometimes. I'd rather they and the trade unions had told the medical industrial complex to go fuck themselves but an aggressive loopholing will do.

Their headquarters are local to me. I went to high-school in mt.carmel.

Hopefully msha doesn't go full retard with the chin strap
At this moment it's only required at Government jobs like airports, interstate highways, but I'm sure this shit will creep into everything.

I should probably find out what type my hard hat is.
If it's got a chinstrap, and side impact protection it's the type 2.

I will say, most people in here have no idea why they're going to type 2. It's not about getting hit with something.😂

Most serious accidents are falls from ladders. That’s where a padded bucket strapped on your head might actually help. They also require podium ladders which are actually nice to use but they are expensive, heavy as shit, and like 4’ longer than the top step so a 6’ ladder is a bitch to move around.

I despise those fucking podium ladders. If theres a ladder I'm going to fall off of, that'll be the one. Some of our locations have the things, and they are a step too high for the ceiling height, so you stand down a step and you got nothing to brace yourself against.

It's because of dumbasses getting hurt, then suing, and the dumbass courts award them money for being a dumbass.

Yes ultimately, that is the reason any safety rules are implemented. To save money. If the GCs could make money killing us, they certainly would.

And having been in commercial construction since 98, it seems it's only about half the time that the injured person is at fault. It's usually some other dumbass not paying attention that injures or kills someone.

However, the reason for the new hard hats is there are a lot of head injuries caused by slips, trips, and falls. Your head hits something hard, bounces, hard hat flies off, and the second hit is what fucks you up.

Honestly, gloves are more bothersome to me than the the new hard hats.

I really hope msha doesn't think this a good for them to implement. I already have to wear enough shit as it is

I find comply to be a rather offensive word
Mean while someone comes looking for you after you haven’t come home or missed important appointments finds you all wrapped up in your driveshaft lathe still spinning

I’m not a safety Nazi but it can save you from injury or death. I’m a firm believer in seat belts and ROPS or roll bars. Saved my life

Japanese have been wearing chin strap hard hats for decades… be more like them. :flipoff2:

Nothing mentioned at our company yet but I suspect it’ll be coming sooner or later. Fun fun. At least it’ll stay on in high wind gust. :flipoff2:
