Lauded by his peers, the U.S. Marine Corps veteran who was reportedly struck twice at the tragic Trump rally was spotted on video walking toward help despite his injuries.
“Talk about hard freaking core.”
When a would-be assassin opened fire Saturday at former President Donald Trump’s Butler, Pennsylvania rally, at least three attendees became victims along with the GOP leader. In addition to the fatal injuries to 50-year-old firefighter Corey Comperatore, 74-year-old retired grandfather James Copenhaver and 57-year-old Marine David “Jake” Dutch received critical injuries.
The latter was seen in a video posted to social media being led by a law enforcement official out of the bleachers after he was said to have been struck in the stomach and the liver, according to Fox News Digital.
In sharing the dramatic footage that seemingly showed Copenhaver being carried away, Mando Fierro detailed, “In this video you see two of the victims being taken away from the scene. The one WALKING HIMSELF out is the Superman I served with, David Jake Dutch. Talk about Hard Freaking Core. Semper Fi, brother.”

The Marine who served in Operation Desert Storm was highly regarded by his peers at the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania with the commander of the latter, Lee Johnson,
telling Fox News Digital, “He’s been a tremendous help to this club.”
“He’s involved with a couple different things we have here at the club. And I just feel so bad for David, his wife … great people. They’ve been members here for a long, long time,” he added.
Similarly, Roger Milliron Jr., who recounted knowing Dutch for 20 years, explained to the outlet, “If you didn’t already know he was a Marine, you’d never know it.”
“He isn’t a loud or boisterous person. He keeps to himself. He is a hard worker. He’s a friend,” Milliron went on as he described how the morning after the tragedy felt at the American Legion. “And then we told everybody that was here what happened, and it went from jovial conversation to you could hear a pin drop.”
Speaking with CBS News, Anthony Grimes of the American Legion
expressed, “It was shocking, very shocking. It’s a little rough knowing that a member of our organization has been injured.”
“He’s a great guy, very loving, very supportive,” he added. “It’s just so sad that things like this happen.”
Likewise, Steven Penn told Fox News Digital, “He’ll talk to anybody. He’s an all-around good guy.”
“Our post is 100% behind him in supporting his family through everything,” it was conveyed.
As had been previously
reported, a crowdfunding page was established to support the victims of the tragedy with an initial goal of $1 million. After having raised more than $2.4 million by Sunday afternoon, the fundraiser surpassed $5.1 million as of Wednesday morning thanks to contributions from over 65,000 donors.
Both Dutch and Copenhaver were said to be in stable condition, and a statement from the Marine Corps League to KDKA-TV read, “David Dutch serves as Commandant of the Westmoreland Detachment #1416, from within the Department of Pennsylvania. Our immediate support continues for David and his family as he continues his recovery from this attack. We offer solace for David and his family along with eternal thoughts and prayers for all the victims of this tragedy.”
