What's new

Furloughed for one week a month.

When I worked the spent fuel program at San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station in SoCal.... I had to join the IBEW union.

During a union gathering, I spoke up about the fact they were asking union members to vote for democrats.

The democrats they were asking us to vote for, were the same democrats that wanted to close nuclear power stations.

No one said a word.....but I think they realized how right I was after the San Onofre Nuclear power plant was closed not long afterward.

I personally have never been a fan of unions. And we can all agree that the UAW destroyed the American car industry.

And we can all agree that the The National Education Association (NEA) and the The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) involved with the education of children have ruined the educational system.

And we can all agree the The National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) and the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) have destroyed the federal government.

Does anyone else see a pattern here ???

3 on 1 off? Fuck that shit. I did 4 on 2 off for a while years ago and hated it. Hated it because only 2 weeks off sucks.

I like working even time. Not killing yourself at work and still have the off time to do whatever you want.

I’ve never made a good union employee but I recognize that unions still benefit me. I get to be a free agent and don’t get taken advantage of because of the work others put in unionizing and stopping their overlords from taking advantage of them. It is of course human nature to ruin everything.

I support the IAM and think they should hold out for everything they can get. I'm still getting paid (less), but from IAM friends I speak with and everything I read in the news, this is going to be a long strike. Possibly into 2025. That's a lot of people out of work or on reduced pay, we will see what happens I guess.

What bothers me is I can't get a second job to make up for the difference without submitting a conflict of interest through HR. I get it, getting a remote job for a competitor or supplier would be unethical, but putting my skills to use in a different facet of aviation or industry in general?

If your not a member, remember the IAM will throw you under the bus in a heart beat if its to their benefit. We can all be friends but we are on different teams at the end of the day. I would be careful who you root for.

I get it that everyone wants more. Team B though is in a particularly bad spot with no real end in sight. IAM should be realistic on that one.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around a company telling you what you can do to earn money while you're not on their clock.
My firm does this as well. Our limits are ridiculous or a pita to get approved.
Even worse we have to do periodic audits of our financial relationships to ensure our personal independence / avoid conflicts of interest.

Ahh, I get it in the case of conflicts of interest or appearances of improper relationships.
I more talking about cash money side hustles, less freelancing.

I get it too, but it's a giant pain in the ass.

It turns out some people get their panties in a wad about my firm advising on material changes to a public company while our staff is investing/shorting the public company :lmao:

We are actually pretty open to allowing SOME side hustles. If I wanted to open a car detailing shop or coffee shop they would be fine with it so long as I submitted for permission correctly. if I wanted to open my own mutual fund or run for political office... Not so much.

Hope your IAM local is better than ours.
Went to a 5 year contract, 55 cent raise over 5 years, lost 4% of 401 match, lost donning and doffing pay, lost our good insurance, and raised dues.
Wonder why we're almost at 52% union members?

I hope I'm wrong as I always wish the best for American companies.
Why? They're a shitty MIC contractor that has made billions of taxpayers, profited heavily from the deaths of service members abroad for decades, lobby for continuing bullshit foreign wars, and they have no one but their own shitty policies to blame for their company falling apart. I hope they crash and burn.

Id rather have some company building commercial planes in the US vs Boeing failing, getting bought out, and going to Mexico.

Then your options will be planes from Europe, Mexico, China, and Russia? I don't think their is a big Indian plane maker?

Edit: I can't root for all us defence contractors to fail, that's a significant portion of our advanced mfg that is still in the US.

They're trash, but damnit, they're our trash.:lmao:

LIke you said, you just need to vent and air and talk about it. no real advice to give.. maybe hang out a shingle and fix stuff for other industries while you wait, not in aircraft business... you might find that you can run your own thing while having the security of 75% pay!

good luck man. I hope boeing can fix their problems, it gets tiresome reading about their failures.

As a member of the IAM out on strike, thanks for your support. Most of us that have been there since the 2014 contract extension have been prepping for this contract, stashing away in a separate strike fund. The 96% approval to strike had to shock execs!

As for furloughs and layoffs. Strike or not Boeing is heavy in the middle and needs to do some trimming. For example. When I hired in there were two second level managers and a handful of first lines on the floor running all of equipment services for Auburn and Fredrickson. Now there are two third levels, four second levels and more 1st lines. 1st lines don't even have time to be on the floor because they are always in meetings or working on projects created by the fluff above them. All that and there are less mechs and techs. Each of those second levels has atleast one analyst, and probably biz ops too. Normal companies or structure usually resembles a pyramid. B is a diamond.
Talking shit about Boeing? Dibs on your shit.

Wanna trade? Its all overtime but the .gov takes it. :mad3:

I think things will be back to normal after the elections. Hopefully.

I would cry myself to sleep with happy tears if I got a week off every month for 75% of my salary. That's the dream.

Exactly this. I’m at a place in my life and my tolerance for my corporate crap that I’d JUMP at this. Assuming they wouldn’t do the normal thing and expect me to put out exactly the same output of fucking TPS reports, of course.

I guess it all depends on where you are in life. At 59 I am not quite ready to retire but getting seriously sick of a lot of the bs that goes with my job. I also don't need my full salary so yes, I would absolutely jump at that chance.

A much younger me wouldn't do it. I had the energy and desire to work, and wanted (needed?) the money.

They have less work than employees, they want you to quit.

Realistic union? :lmao:

When is your next stand-up show, I'll take 2 front row seats, you're hilarious!

Wasn’t it just ruled than non competes were invalid?
That's on hold. Ryan donates to a lot of political people in Texas so they sued and got it blocked. If the FTC files an appeal at the federal level to get away from bought judges, it may regain traction. But as of now it's dead.

I'd be fine just staying at work if my dog was with me.

Some of the union guys stay for the whole contract. Couple I know work 7-8 months straight then take summer off.

You guys have seen the news, the IAM is on Strike and Brand B is furloughing all of it's non-union employees, including myself. This is the second time for me in 3-4 years. I'm not singing the blues here, maybe just need to talk. I still get 75% of my paycheck and benefits, plus a week off a month. Honestly it's a good time for a break and I have money saved up. It's a fucking nightmare getting a group of 30 people to discuss/decide on who gets which week off. So-and-so has a trip planned to Cabo, other So-and-so has surgery scheduled, so-and so has a wedding to attend.... My last manager was more of a type A personality, he just assigned the furlough weeks and that was it. This new group I'm in, it's a vote/discussion which takes so much longer.

Also, last time I was furloughed, I applied for unemployment for the first time in my life, ended up paying half of it back after appeals and such. I'm pretty sure my paperwork was accurate, it was either the state of Washington or brand B who screwed something up.

Do you have to take the whole one week off a month? I got furloughed after the housing crash for about a year(government stuff), and just took 1 day a week off, plus an extra Friday each month. I picked Wednesday and it was a nice break: Work two days, take a day off, work two more, weekend, repeat. The last Friday of the month I had off as well. Of course that was back before inflation and kids and stuff, but it wasn't bad and pretty relaxing- I got a shit load of house chores done on Wednesday and I'd go ride my bike with all the dudes I knew that got off in the early afternoon.

Unfortunately yes, it was mandated by the company, also to be eligible for unemployment in Wa state. I have to miss so many hours in one week to be eligible.
