I'm not surprised at the delay, but who'd a thought they had a CHRISTMAS LIGHT INSTALLERS CONVENTION.

It goes to the concept of "when did hard core become so hard core" Everything has been amped up to a level that the average guy is just out of his scope.

Since this got bumped, Ive got a story
My parents went to Hawaii last month, trip planned by a travel company. They were supposed to fly Cedar rapids to Dallas with a 3 hour layover, then to Hawaii. Instead, they were sent from CR to Chicago, about the same
layover, then straight to Hawaii. Not a bad trade off, right? Except for the fact that 12 of the people on the trip didnt get out of Chicago until the next day :homer:
The return trip involved a 6 hour layover in Pheonix, but thats more on the travel company for not planning worth a shit

Fuck Hawaii. Carribean islands are basically the same but way less expensive - and closer for most mainlanders.

I stopped flying when DC-10 engines started just falling off - 1980s.

In the 1970s, people actually dressed up to fly like they was a going to church.

Greyhounds with wings.

We left Cancun a couple weeks ago and another flight going to St Luis was cancelled so they all were at our terminal looking for a seat. I was really hoping they were going to start auctioning off the seats. We were prepared to postpone our trip back home and tough it out in Cancun for another day or two.

Sadly, they just boarded us and told the other flight they were SOL. Caused to be delayed by an hour though.

I am commuting to work now, I fly the next 6 days in a row then commute back on day 7.

This thread reminds me why I generally only fly Alaska, even in coach the seats are relatively comfortable for a large fat guy. Maybe not so much for the people sitting next to me, but fuck em!

Flight crew has a ton to do with the experience, some are bitter old hags and queens with nothing better to do than make your day just as miserable as theirs. Last flight we took one stewardess took exception to me using the forward bathroom when I was just in business class and not first. Every other Alaska flight I've taken this isn't an issue. She also talked some shit about our kid and ignored my drink orders. Luckily the old queen on board that was running around liked me so he kept bringing me beers. :smokin:

I was based in LAS for years, now i drive to LAS to commute to a base where i can have a better schedule. Seniority is everything, and I am the #1 captain in my base now compared to # 28 in las vegas
Gotcha

one of my mates senior to me in the scareforce (south african not USAF) flies for that airline attempting to merge with Spirit. Lives in Ft Myers but based in JFK. Still a better deal than when he lived in CA and had to deal with a crash pad in NY/NJ. If only the public knew how you guys are treated off duty / getting to duty.

I actually have a recent positive flying story. A couple weeks back the wife and I flew Vancouver to Seattle to DC to San Juan with no delays and luggage made it to San Juan. Yesterday flew back San Juan to Chicago to Vancouver with good results even with only 1 hour between landing and take off in Chicago. We expected the worst and even packed a carry on just in case luggage was lost but all went well. Every flight was with United.

All this shit went downhill when they banned smoking and retired the DC-10. I don't even smoke - but smoking and the risk of the airplane blowing the fucking cargo door off the back severely curtailed the blatant faggotry of today's flyers.

I flew a couple years ago in a plane that still had ash trays in the seats.

I remember joking that there was going to be a projector with in flight movie too. You all remember those?

I usually fly AK Air and the movies are supposed to be on a plane based WIFI. I haven't been able to get that shit to work right in probably going on 10 years now.

I think we had to pay extra to rent the headphones to hear the movie, though. Or am I not remembering right?

Getting ready to board in Flagstaff heading to Memphis. Got storms from Dallas to Memphis. I do not care for Dallas airport.
Shout out to 64Trvlr, for giving me pointers on the Arizona area.

That Chicago to hawaii flight sucks dong. I did a 3day business trip there when I was working for United and holy shit that sucked. Add to the fact that the airlines put the shittiest planes with the most seats they could possibly jam in them and with the least amenities because it's mostly people flying on points or via agencies just adds to the joy.

Have three round trip flights scheduled for this year. The increased incident rates have me more concerned than I normally would be. Generally I fly 0-1 time a year, mostly zero. One of the trip will be the first time I've ever been outside of North America to boot.

You're no worse off than you were 10 years ago. Slightly better tbh. CRM is better. Training is better. And don't worry about pilot keeling over, one guy can get it down and 99% of the times there's always a pilot commuting or deadheading somewhere.

But ya flying commercial sucks balls. Airlines pay my bills and I still don't like it

Agreed. Yes, there are some indications of issues, but keep in mind flying is still over 2 orders of magnitude safer than driving on a by mile basis. Even if the risk doubled because of covid or whatever that means instead of 100x lower risk it's only 50x lower.... still incredibly low.

I’ll be on a plane in the next hour. Allegiant !

Short flight so don’t really care if people don’t like them.

They serve actual food on planes anymore?

Years ago it was a fairly decent meal.

Last several times I've flow it's been hit or miss to even get pretzels or a cup of water.

Be better off to go lay down in the cargo bin with the dogs. Least I wouldn't hear the volume 11 DIIIINNNNGGGG every time I doze off.

I have always been suspicious of the stats saying how safe flying is compared to driving.
"There are lies, damn lies, and statistics."

What is the survivability rate of a malfunction in a plane vs, a car?

Percent of accidents that include death? (Lots of minor collisions on the ground - how about in the air?)

True because 3rd world shitholes are driving traffic deaths up?

True because teens cause about half of those accidents, and we don't let teens drive planes?

How would those stats change if we were brave enough to raise driving age back to 18?

Worthless stat is worthless.
