What's new

engineering that makes you want to punch babies.

That, or the stupid decompression cam thingy decides to exit through the side of the block when it inevitably fails. :homer:
The funny thing is the vanguard motors are great.
Made in j a pan.
But every intek I've been asked to fix is a pile of shit.

My almighty “21hp” intek is still going, though.

Got a 20 horse intek in the box store Jawn Deere bought used, going on five years with nothing more than checking the oil, don’t recall adding any, it gets used 30 minutes a week in the summer.

Why did this need to be changed Volvo? It used to be accessible from the bottom. Also you can see where they capped off the great big oil fill hole in the center of the valve cover and gave me a hole half the size to the left. All so it could be some bayonet style locking bullshit instead of the threaded cap that worked for decades.
Oh, and why the fuck do I have to still pull off the while belly pan if you moved the oil filter to the top? Can't just give me a access hole like hanz does?
Fuck you Sven, hanz does it better.

Can you see the timing chain from the new fill hole or do they still use belts?

Wish I could share some of the amazingly dumb shit I see at work.

Suffice it to say, gov influence does not improve things. Nor does piggy backing on the reputation of icons before you when you couldn't engineer a ball bearing.

get out the holesaw and Dremel and put the filler cap where it belongs?
that's a lot more work than pouring the oil in really slow

manche, with a long tranny funnel you can put the oil in the oil filter hole
also the filter sorta fits out through the top, you just gotta yank it off the cap to fit it through the space provided
plastic bag makes it less messy of an operation

anyone else notice that google maps got dumbed down for cell phone screens?

looking at directions it doesn't matter how far I scroll in, none of the roads are labeled with their fucking names
it used to be they'd be oftentimes labelled with the wrong fucking name (like I35 was some gay "eisenhower memorial trail" horseshit) but now there ain't fucking shit just "you install the app on your tracking device so we can tell you to turn when we tell you to turn you don't need to know fuckall, slave"

Get an old standalone garmin for $20 off eBay. It'll know about everything except new subdivisions and those are well labeled.

I did it that way for years.

I've bitched about that for years honestly. I haven't noticed it being worse lately though.

I've been doing that as backup for years since I refuse to let my phone touch internet
I like making a 'cardboard GPS' before leaving, and 95% of the time I can make it work without turning on the gps idiot box

41 here, feel like I got old about 5 or 7 years ago.
I think working anywhere or in any department/role for about a decade makes you defacto old. So does having a hobby and friend group for over a decade. I built my first rig starting almost exactly 20 years ago, and that's when I got into wheeling and met my longest standing closest friends. I've worked for the same University for almost 17 years and in the same department, progressing through similar roles for 12 or 14 of those years...

The first time you get offered the senior discount is a sobering day.
I was like 42 or some shit. Took the discount though.

I don't know about Google maps but Google earth has a setting for that.

Speaking of old Garmins, I had one that all the roads were shown as red and the route was green in the 3d image. It was useless to me since I'm red/green colorblind and I couldn't find a way to change the display settings. Poor engineering.

I've had a few TomToms and their color scheme works fine.

Engine ECM in a nook molded into the counter weight.

4th ECM we've changed on these in a year or two which is a whole bunch of ecms imo.
Of course it's another techs job but his crane can't handle it (mine barely can)

Of course he comes down with the Chyna flu so I'm solo... While taking the 36mm bolts out the bottom of the counter weight I get douched with nasty black sludge that forms off each bolt like a sprinkler :mad3:

The oil filter hoses were leaking and flooded this nook at the base.

Because I tore it down in a "bad" spot I had to put the counter weight back on to return the following day with new oil filter hoses.
We do it right cause we do it twice!
