Do you back in to parking spots?

Do you back in?

Yes. Why is this all of the sudden controversial?

All oilfield companies I’ve ever worked for. Backing up when parking is a mandatory requirement for safety reasons. ConocoPhillips was so serious about it that pulling forward into a parking spot at the office was a fireable offense. The company I work for now bought most of Conoco’s assets and it’s still one of the conditions of employment. If you back over something at work you are in deep shit. We had a water truck back into a well head this last winter. Immediately terminated the driver and had a big safety meeting about reminding everyone of the policy.

You know who thinks backing up to park is an unreasonable or stupid thing to ask? Women that’s who. If you have to back up to leave, them bitches are only postponing a back up. They still have to back up, they just procrastinated the inevitable. Backing in on parking so your first act leaving is a forward movement should reduce the potential for vehicle strikes. I see this is a hot topic of discussion on Facebook right now.

This is from the ConocoPhillips employee handbook. I believe Chevron, Exxon, BP, and to many others to list all have a similar written rule about “first act forward” when getting in a vehicle to leave.

It's not controversial, just spun off from the meme thread.

Every company I worked for but 1 had a back in requirement. I've made it a requirement at my company.

Yeah. If I'm parallel parking. Otherwise I'm generally a pull through type of guy because I'm parking out in the boonies anyway. Fuck that combat parking up close with dickheads beating up my shit because they don't care. A few extra steps is a good thing anyway.

I back in at home and at work. Mainly because the employee parking lot at work is just a gravel lot and no one parks in consistent lines, so backing can be interesting. So I back in against a wall at the edge and pull straight out so I can see. At home I back in because my driveway is short and I can back over the tongue of the trailer but if I pull in, it hangs on the front axle.

I've backed in forever mostly because I have always driven low sports cars and I don't want to hit the lip on the parking curb.

I put no because there is no sometimes. I back in my driveway at home and depending on what spots are available I back into the parking spots at circle k.

This, plus for 25 years at my last job we had to back in due to this very reason so I adopted it. If you need to leave in a hurry you're best positioned by backing in.
:homer: If I have to leave in a hurry I want the back of my vehicle smashed up first, I don't want to kill the radiator right off of the bat.

The Walmart pickup parking is a PIA in the GMC extra cab with shell. It's too crowded for me to have patience to back into those spots. Otherwise, I pull through. The XJ I don't pull through because then there isn't enough space to load it from the rear. At home it depends.

I’ve seen companies use the move forward first motto.

It’s also dumb anyone gets hit by a car. Walking look and see reverse lights then stop.

Driving look behind you and if you see someone stop.

But people are dumb. And usually on their phones or just don’t respect that a 6000lb vehicle will kill you.

What are you going to be demolition derbying if you need to leave in a hurry?

On our oilfield sites. Everything is a working bomb because we’re moving stored energy with ignition sources all around it. People have backed over pipes and caught extra stuff on fire trying to make a quick getaway. We’re trained to have the front of the truck already pointed in the direction of leaving location so that if something bad happens theoretically you can jump in and go without having to think about what you’re about to run over.

I back in most of the time, you have a better view and knowledge of what's around when you pull up and execute your maneuver versus diving in and hoping for the best on your way out.

My oldest has been driving a little over a year, hated me making her back in, but she finally realized a stitch in time saves nine. Kids would arrive at school at all different times, and all rush out when the bell rings. She looks left right left and sends it while everybody else is trying to back up
