“Do All” Tow Rig?

But how many hemi trucks are sold vs Ford gas trucks? I see gas superduty work trucks all over, ram is way more rare and if it is a ram, 90% chance it's a diesel.

If you want a ram, just get a Cummins, they're cheap enough.

the whole reason to buy a ram is the cummins. I didnt want diesel, so f250 I went

With your tax benefit of a 1/2 ton, I'd search the southern states for a GM 1500HD. It's basically a 2500 w/ a C-clip 14bolt rear, 6.0L/4L80E.

Oh perfect, all the power and suspension of an older 1/2 ton, but the fuel mileage of a 1 ton big block

Suspension on mine is considerably more stout than the 2008 Duramax I had....the springs don't really start to act like springs until you have at least 2000lbs in the bed. Its far from a 1/2 ton.

Mileage....yes, you're absolutely correct....gets 9mpg in town or towing....anything. I have been able to squeak 14mpg out of it unloaded on the highway a few times though lol.

I had the suv version of it, but 8 lug, it was OK, but I just feel they're so over rated. Everyone said the 6.0/4L80E was bullet proof, but mine was junk, knocked at idle, has constant codes, and the trans shifted like a midget was in there with a hammer once warm. And ya, even the suv body with tiny little pizza cutter tires and 6" ground clearance couldn't get 13mpg if you babied it. Maybe if you have one you like, keep it, but I don't know if there are many good ones left with out paying way too much.

You can get an aluminum body F150 that will run circles around it in every way while using half the fuel for the same price as what a low mile one probably is. It's no diffent than a 7.3 to me, ya they're good, but overrated and over priced for what they are.

Are you dead set staying in your area? Nor Cal to PNW has good deals on GMT800s when they come up

So Cal to AZ priced bit higher but still mainly rustfree
If the dollar wasn’t so crappy a west coast truck would make a ton of sense. +30% difference on exchange plus all the add ons; flight hotels food had to get back home and I am betting it doesn’t pencil out.

I should maybe look for trucks in Manitoba or Saskatchewan

was dead set, until I read the rollover ratings. Most fatalities.

I haven’t looked at the research, but I know for a fact there were more than a few people that bought those for their wife to haul the kids in, with the added benefit that it could tow a massive RV.

A guy who has never pulled more than a lawnmower or Jon boat doing a cross country trip with a 36’ bumper pull trailer is a recipe for disaster, I don’t know how much of it is specific to the vehicle.

I thought theyd be perfect for that, but then started reading about a very high fatality rate with rollovers. Superduties arent better, but I started to rethink the whole excursion is a tank thing.

They actually just recalled that body style for bad rollover ratings

It's like wtf, 26 years later after they made it for 17 years and sold millions of them?

That Excursion looks like it went off the side of a bridge at 80 mph. I doubt any vehicle would fair well in a similar situation, but Euro stuff typically has better crash ratings. I can tell you for a fact that any full size truck will do a pretty solid job of keeping you safe in a head on collision.

the trucks or excursion?

what doea recalled mean on a vehicle this old?

I've spent a lot of time cruising salvage auctions and junkyards, in search of big 3 diesel trucks, the steel super duties have a habit of being pancaked while the rest of the body and chassis shows little damage. It's not a bias thing, or a sampling thing, it's a ****ty design thing.

Regarding roll overs on the F series. There is documentation about Ford lightening the body to meet CAFE standards and thus it is not properly supported resulting in cave ins.

Not that this is uncommon in their world… or other OEMs. It just seems that Ford always runs on the ragged edge of acceptable… even their tow ratings.

I’d argue GM and Ram are far more conservative

He's not talking about front end collisions, he's talking about rollovers. That body style Super Duty is known for being **** in a rollover. Ford has gotten 2 $1b+ judgements against them recently from cases where the lid pancaked when it realistically shouldn't have, given the situation.

~20 years ago I visited a testing facility in Arizona. They had a bunch of Excursions and Suburbans that they had crushed to get data for some of these lawsuits.

At the same time they had every UTV on the market (this was pre RZR, so Ranger, Rhino, Gator, ect.) outfitted with aluminum outriggers so they could test the relative stability of different UTVs, again to support either a lawsuit or the defense of a lawsuit.

/Cool story bro

I know on one of those lawsuits the truck hit a drainage ditch at speed in their '02 SD and went airborne for 80' before landing on its roof with contributing factors being old and under inflated tires. I don't think there's any truck that could have done any better in those conditions. The article also said there were nearly 80 similar crash results. How many SDs were sold between 1999-2016? Nearly 80 doesn't seem excessive to me

I was thinking about this the other day. My work truck is a 19 F550, the cab was originally built for a 4500 lb F150, now it's on a ~20k F550.....

When they designed the 99-16 cab, most of those trucks were probably 5500-6500 lbs.

Now fast forward to the 11-16 diesels that are 8-9k for a F250-350.

Did they factor in using that cab on 450-750s also?

If they never get sued for fatal crashes it’s cheaper. So apparently Ford likes to gamble.

fordguy

As an excurison owner, when you see/experience the shear size of them on the road compared to other stuff, I'll take my chances.

i had a semi merg me in on me from the left lane and put my on the berm. median, etc...About the only vehicles that as intimating when drive an EX.

mine is also 4.30 :flipoff2:
