Tow rig rental?

Sounds like your location just sucks ass.

I've rented 3 uhaul trailers 1 way medium distance (like 50-250 miles) and each time it was surprising cheap, easy pick up and drop off, ect.

The trucks just get so expensive with any distance like you said. Not to mention most likey low single digit mpg.

Last person I know that moved multiple States went with a Penske truck. Said it worked out to be way cheaper plus the diesel should get quite a bit better fuel mileage
Seemed like the trailers were cheap, I was surprised at the $500 quote the other day.

When I moved 2 years ago, it was easier and cheaper to rent a freight trailer and have ABF pick it up and deliver it than u haul or penske. Also surprising, but I'll do that again for sure

I’m with you, renting seems expensive until you factor in ownership costs like insurance, registration fees, rotten tire, repairs…once a year rental makes sense. Many times the rental is newer, where the cheap stuff you own keeps getting older.
That is the best aspect of the rental, it's set up to be not too much more expensive but with less hassle. Just don't expect rental trucks to always be problem free. Hopefully the rental company is good about getting them swapped out, just does happen as well

Un possible, you should have bought a 1970s rv, gutted it and used that to move :flipoff2:

Wouldn't fit

I'm not against the rental, just keep it honest that's it not cheap:flipoff2:

I don't think $850 is unreasonable to use a $70k truck for 7 days and 1500 miles.

I get your point, I still plan to use my old stuff for most trips, but rather than keep the 2016 diesel around when it's only really needed once a year, I think I'll just rent a truck.

Or once I drive the Cummins swapped Ford enough, I may be willing to take it.

Didnt read everything but Penske has a “unlimited mileage local” deal. I’ve put 3k miles in a weekend on a truck and besides the drones saying it seemed unusual I didn’t have any issues.

Mash pedal till limiter, set cruise and sit back and enjoy the ride.

Box truck or pickup?

I hadn't thought about penske for a pick up.

Possibly both, what I had were box’s, 30 foot I think, family bs. Had a lift gate which was a life saver for the back. Have also rented their u haul trailer for “94 2wd single cab ranger”. Really a full sized square body.

I can't find anything on them having a regular 1 ton pick up.

I also used the uhaul trailer for a square body  it was a cucv with a heavy built flatbed. Trailer couldn't have been an inch shorter and still worked. But it towed fine and never showed any signs of struggle.

I would go into local office or give them a call if far. I rented from a hub and returned to a Home Depot, I think they were 10 miles apart but still “local one way”. This was pre Covid though so not sure if it’s still a thing, haven’t had to use it so haven’t looked.

They all do, I know at Uhaul the rates are at the discretion of the branch manager. The consumer focused storage type places near me don't even have the "askl us about our day rate" sign. The "we habla everything" hole in the wall location with bars on the windows has it on a giant sign by the checkout.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't do it on the vans and pickups because those are leased and turned in every couple years and the economics of that operation are totally different than the box trucks that they own outright.

Their 1-way fees vary massively depending on where you're coming from and going to and general demand. Cost me less to drop the car dolly in Trenton than it would have to bring it back the next day because who the fuck is trying to drop hardware in Trenton.

I just checked enterprise, and they actually seem pretty reasonable. 100ish a day with 300 miles per day included. It never occured to me you could rent a 3/4 or 1 ton truck.

Bigger issue for me would be that the nearest Enterprise Trucks office to Bonner's Ferry is over 2 hours away in Spokane.

Just took a look for the heck of it. Curiously, I can rent local if it is business use, but have to drive to Maryland or way up north (I'm outside Harrisburg) if I want to rent for personal use. Same specifics - 1-ton pickup for same weekend, pick up Friday and drop off Monday (Sept 6th to 9th).

I’ve contemplated it. It’s a backup plan in case shit hits the fan for me one day.

For me, I have a truck that fits in my garage, cost me 5k up front (put much more into it since then unfortunately) but no payment, no storage payment, insurance is less then 1k a year. It gets about 1-2 oil changes a year so to me it makes sense to keep it, renting would cost me quite a bit more every year.

If your dead set on a brand new 60-80k truck it would make more sense to rent.

What recent events have you pondering this?

Having a 5 day trip ruined by a broken truck.

"Can't realistically call any junkyard in the country to get a longblock and do an emergency engine swap in someone else's driveway in under 48hr" seems like a pro for the carb'd tree-fiddy mulletmobile and a strike against the new hotness.

Luckily it was only an hour from home

Had enough time left in the weekend to breakdown in a 2nd rig on the side of the road:laughing:
Jesus, when it rains it pours. What happened between both of them?

I've rented the 1 ton pickups before for towing from Enterprise at the Spokane location and once when I wrecked my 01 Dodge from the Bend OR location. No problems and they were all low mileage Dodges. I've only ever seen Penske box trucks, no pickups. I actually work on Penske stuff and do have to say when a yellow Penske box truck breaks down they go above and beyond to fix it or get another truck swapped out. One instance it was one moving across country that broke down Saturday evening due to diesel in the DEF. Penske paid for the hotel and moving crew to transfer belongings to replacement truck, they were very apologetic that neither would be there until Sunday morning. Another time they were towing one from middle of MT all the way to Seattle, stopped in Spokane on the weekend for me to look at and once I determined it was serious and not a quick fix they finished the tow.

Well scrap that idea, I ain't paying to drive a fuckin dodge :flipoff2:

Kidding, I couldn't care less what brand it is.

That's really a shame. Would have been hilarious if you'd have had to ask for help after shitting on everyone's old trucks as not good enough.

No worries, some of us actually leave the basement. But I get it, it's probably scarry trying to find places to plug in the cpap. Not to mention refilling the gout medication outside your normal pharmacy.
