DIY Kitchen Remodel

I remember kicking and screaming damn near because of the $5k quartz countertops a decade ago that my wife picked for a kitchen remodel that ended up costing me about $11k total including an equally stupid french door stainless fridge. Swallowing how much of the total outlay was just countertops seemed crazy at the time when I was kicking my ass nights and weekends to keep costs down. Then again, I was not about to go back to laminate.

Then a year or so later my general contractor BIL bought cheap Chinese granite slabs and did it himself for maybe $1,200.

Not equal products and not equal installs, I'll leave it at that.

Fuckin called it. :lmao:

Nate, those million dollar houses aren't being bought by people with half mil household incomes. They're being bought by thousandiare boomers who make $300k combined household income and have equity they're cashing out to make 20+% down or younger professional couples who are making mid 3s pushing 4 combined. They're not rich. They're just financially irresponsible.

God damn

How’s the island turning out man?

This is why I didn’t do a build thread for my kitchen

Uhhh, yeah.

There folks in here making over $600k a year?

Is this bad trolling? There's dozens of people here that make that. By themselves and combined with a spouse. My house is just in the 7 figures, but I paid less than 350 for it. All the additional value was reno and remodel by myself like the OP is doing. We could have bought a 7 figure house from the start, but there wasn't anything that was perfect and worth the money. I just put in a $80k bathroom that I spent $52k of my dollars on. Next is a $200k kitchen that should cost less than $100k.

I think dozens is stretching it. This places skews toward people who have fairly low net income for their net worth. Driving over rocks isn't a form of recreation known for attracting law firm partners and investment fund managers and C-suite types.

But if you include the liars it's easily hundreds. :flipoff2:

Let's be honest this forum is far less wheeling than bitching these days.

Id bet there are 50+ millionares on here. Not the spending kind, but the savings kind.

It's cheaper that way.

I bet that number drops to under ten if you don't let people include the value of their primary residence.

It's really not hard to have a million bucks in real estate if you bought land in the right place 30yr ago.

makes HIM SMILE when he walks in his kitchen to spend an hr prepping his killer meal for all his family and friends when they come over to relax and enjoy time together.
“Who has time to spend an hour in a kitchen? Best I can do is chew on unthawed fish sticks straight out of the chest freezer I got at auction last winter.”

If you're bending the wife over the counter frequently she'll probably appreciate butcher block over cold granite or marble.

Please add your thoughts below so I can ignore them, especially if you are in the cabinet or wood business.
I forgot to include financial advice in my first post.

I have a plan. I have the panels cut for the island base cabinets and edgebanding applied where it is needed. Now I just need to build the boxes and frame it up.

Things I needed to figure out.
1) Set island on top of hardwood OR cut flooring and set island on subfloor.
2) level island with level or "level" with the slope of house.

My flooring isn't exactly perfectly "flat" like a sanded hardwood or LVP flooring would be.
My floor isn't level. I think the flooring varied 1/4-3/8" where the island goes.

For my other base cabinets. I built a seperate base and leveled that, then set all on cabinets on it. Same as Bents Woodworking did here.

I'm going to do the same for my island. I have a day of vacation tomorrow. I'm hoping to get the island mostly constructed and in place. Once I verify its all good I'll cut the floor and build a level base under it.
