DIY Kitchen Remodel

At 30mm thick you don't need anything under that stone.

If you wanted to have a visible rail as part of your design just conceal a length of steel rectangular tube behind it notched into your end frames. It would make it easier to locate the top of that corner leg you have, but you have no structural issues as is.

I'd do probably 10 larger spans than that every year with no issues. When they get real big we just conceal a bit of steel into the design.

IF you don't know Mike PAteys work then maybe temper your idea if you think you failed.
He is the King of Overkill, BUT he is pretty fucking smart and actually does the calculations to know.
Having said that he is also MEGA rich so it's possible he is burning money.
He and his twin are both smart, they started off building decks, not sure what their worth is now but I'm sure they are muti millionairs. Plus Mike is a work a holic capable of 20 hr days at full throttle

Near $8000 for a COUNTER?!
$110 sq ft installed. We will have about 70 sq ft.

Spending near $8k on a COUNTER is nuts...

Well.. Unless you're making well in the 7 figures and 8k is like $80 to the poors.

Could do 1/2" thick 304 stainless for like 1/4 of that.

That is about what I paid for the quartz I had installed, had lament for 25 years installed quartz to sell it

I started reading your post, thought "Gotta be Nate", glanced up and was right.

100% agree. Life goals- get to a place where I can spend $8k on a counter without heartburn.

That SS counter better come with a Fireball vise!

Just being realistic. Don't imagine anyone on here is in the "top 1%"

Some sure pretend like it though.
I mentioned the counter to my Mom and she said my Aunt and Uncle dropped $100k into their kitchen.
Reason she knows is cause they make sure EVERYONE knows.

She never has worked, he retired as an E9, which is around 55k a year.

You don't put linglong tires on a Bugatti...
Somewhere there's at least one guy who tows a boat with a Ferrari. The boat trailer has a Harbor Freight jack. I know this because I ran into him there where he was buying that jack.

Cool story, I know. :flipoff2:

I get it, and i'm afrugal prick...

But the guy is diy'ing a $30-50k? retail kitchen remodel himself, chose to spend some of that savings on a counter material.
If he doubled the counter top budget of $4k who cares if he doesn't?

These "more money than sense" opinions seem to originate from people that don't appreciate nice shit and often don't have any nice shit:shaking:

I think stone is shit taste for a house you're actually gonna live in and use and isn't a flip or an AirBnB or something but the money isn't of consequence here.

Nail on head. To each their own.

Yes, and no. I've got some friends who live in a $5M house on a lake with a floatplane out back. The wife drives a $100K Gwagon, and I'm sure gives no more thought to it than I do my 25yo Grand Cherokee. It's all perspective.

I'm not saying anyone shouldn't spend what they want on fixing up their stuff. I'm more saying, from the cheap seats,.

So yeah, in the context of $8K countertops, I don't have any nice shit.

I enjoy looking at other people's nice shit, though.

The wife likes it. Not sure how many of you factored that in. In return, the wife doesn't question what I spend in tools. Are there cheaper smarter options? Undoubtably.

I am logging all expenses including every tool spent specifically for this kitchen job. It should be interesting. In the end it may cost near what paying a pro would cost. I will have learned a few lessons and have a few new tools. It may not be a pro level job and we are ok with that.

There is a chance this countertop depreciates to $0 and also a chance it's still here when I sell the place. That is 15-30 years out. If this place is still around I'll be sure to keep you guys updated.

I made my first cut on my island a few minutes ago. I have a lot to get done in 6 days.

I've gotten to the point when I am doing some non diy task (id say kitchen remodel, HVAC replacement, slab leak etc.) I don't want to struggle with a jig saw and a tape measure to try and build quality furniture.

Buying a "really expensive" Saw Stop saw isn't shit compared to the retail price of a kitchen remodel of this scope.
Same for the stone...
It just really doesn't matter outside of this project cost xx % more than it could have, but the OP is paying not any of you blow hards:flipoff2:

The expensive saw isn't gonna make you a good woodworker. :flipoff2:

But you're not. Thats the going rate for that material, I had it in my last house. I built the cabinets and chose to spend my money on that, it was money well spent. Being rich or not had nothing to do with it

What does a $8000 counter do that a $500 one doesn't?

Sure, but that expensive saw will last a lifetime and could pay for itself many times over.
Or sell it after a few projects for probably 75% of its cost and still be ahead.

Not going to get decent results for finish work out of 30 yr old $150 when new jobsite saw that the blade wanders like 1/4".... I've tried 🤣

The same thing money spent on a Mog you can't drive does, makes you happy, oh wait !
But I can sell that for well over what I paid for it if i decide.

Same with most of the heavy equipment i own.

And this particular thing adds value to the home, you're not losing money by doing it. We're not talking rent houses here.

Most people lose money on anything with a motor, including you. You're labor is NOT free so it counts against the cost

Sure, adds value, but usually not a dollar in equals dollar of value.

Putting $20k into a kitchen, if well done MIGHT bump the home value $10-15k, depending on the market.

This is a willful misunderstanding of what opportunity cost is. :shaking:

Unless you are at the level of Bill Fucking Gates the potential net income of time spent on other shit is almost certainly not greater than what you would pay to outsource. The problem people run into is that there's only so much time in a day so you gotta outsource some shit.

But a $20k kitchen in a home that should have had a $150k kitchen will definitely LOWER the price...
Yes, that's true.
Don't think anyone on here is pulling the kind of $$ to be affording 7 figures houses though.

Plus either not having the tools/equipment or knowledge.

Like not going to buy $750k of used paving equipment so you can get a paved driveway instead of paying $20k to get it done.
