Anne Beatts (February 25, 1947–April 7, 2021) was an American comedy writer

Early life[edit]

Beatts was born in Buffalo, New York, to parents she has described as "beatniks".[SUP][1][/SUP] Beatts grew to have what has been called an "aggressive, dark sensibility" [SUP][1][/SUP] which she later put to use in the world of comedy. Growing up in Somers, New York, she later attended McGill University.[SUP][1][/SUP]

It was at McGill University where Beatts discovered the darkly tragic humor of Jewish writers J. D. Salinger, Philip Roth, and Bruce Jay Friedman.[SUP][1][/SUP] At this time, Beatts converted to Judaism.[SUP][1][/SUP]
National Lampoon[edit]

After graduating from college, Beatts joined National Lampoon magazine, a national offshoot of the Harvard Lampoon. She brought her dark sense of humor to her work, and co-wrote a parody advertisement for Volkswagen which was conceived by Philip Socci for which the magazine was later sued by the car company.[SUP][2][/SUP] The advertisement stated, "If Ted Kennedy drove a Volkswagen, he'd be President today," accompanied by a photograph of a VW Beetle floating on a lake (an allusion to Kennedy's Chappaquiddick incident).

Beatts became the first female editor of National Lampoon magazine, where she worked with Michael O'Donoghue. The two became romantically involved, and both soon joined the creative team of Saturday Night Live in the early years of the program.[SUP][3][/SUP]
Television[edit]

Beatts is regarded as having been something of a pioneer in television and comedy circles, as an early female comedy writer and one of the very few female writers working in the National Lampoon/SNL comedy scene of the 1970s. At SNL she was nominated for an Emmy five times, winning once. In 2001 she won a Writer's Guild Award.[SUP][4][/SUP][SUP][better source needed][/SUP] Beatts created the 1982 CBS sitcom Square Pegs, and additionally appeared in uncredited guest spots on the early SNL.[SUP][citation needed][/SUP]

Beatts wrote the book for the 1985 Ellie Greenwich jukebox musical Leader of the Pack and produced the first season of A Different World in 1987–1988.

After several credits in the 1990s, Beatts eventually moved away from writing for television. In 2006, she directed the series John Waters Presents Movies That Will Corrupt You with her writing and producing partner, Eve Brandstein for B-Girls Productions.

In 2007, Beatts served as one of the judges for the online comedy competition Project Breakout.[SUP][5][/SUP]

Beatts served as Adjunct Professor in the Writing Division at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts,[SUP][6][/SUP] as well as at Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. She also gave private lessons on writing sketch comedy.[SUP][7][/SUP]

I'd assume so, he got up to all sorts of shenanigans over the years.

Let's not forget he's also a WW2 vet who served in both the Europe and Pacific theatres. He gave up a promising naval career to stand in the shadow of the Queen.

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark,[SUP][1][/SUP] 10 June 1921[SUP][fn 2][/SUP] – 9 April 2021) was a member of the British royal family as the husband of Queen Elizabeth II.

Philip was born into the Greek and Danish royal families. He was born in Greece, but his family was exiled from the country when he was an infant. After being educated in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, he joined the British Royal Navy in 1939, aged 18. From July 1939, he began corresponding with the thirteen-year-old Princess Elizabeth, whom he had first met in 1934. During the Second World War he served with distinction in the Mediterranean and Pacific Fleets. After the war, Philip was granted permission by George VI to marry Elizabeth. Before the official announcement of their engagement in July 1947, he abandoned his Greek and Danish titles and styles, became a naturalised British subject, and adopted his maternal grandparents' surname Mountbatten. He married Elizabeth on 20 November 1947. Just before the wedding, he was granted the style His Royal Highness and created Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich by King George VI. Philip left active military service when Elizabeth became queen in 1952, having reached the rank of commander, and was made a British prince in 1957.

Philip had four children with Elizabeth: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. Through a British Order in Council issued in 1960, descendants of the couple not bearing royal styles and titles can use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, which has also been used by some members of the royal family who do hold titles, such as Anne, Andrew, and Edward.

A sports enthusiast, Philip helped develop the equestrian event of carriage driving. He was a patron, president, or member of over 780 organisations, and he served as chairman of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, a self-improvement program for young people aged 14 to 24.[SUP][2][/SUP] He was the longest-serving consort of a reigning British monarch and the longest-lived male member of the British royal family. He retired from his royal duties on 2 August 2017, aged 96, having completed 22,219 solo engagements since 1952. Philip died on 9 April 2021, at the age of 99, just two months before his 100th birthday.

If you believe in property rights, then what happened is he inherited a huge amount of land (110,000 acres, more than Liz) which has property deeds going back to when they invented property deeds, the Domesday Book. No I'm not joking.

So basically a very, very, VERY rich man paid a lot of taxes and spent a shitload of his time posing for cameras, for no reason at all. Meanwhile Joe Biden's kids are just off destroying Western Civilization and doing coke off of hooker's noses.

So Phillip was a smartass, and made fun of convention all of the time. Better yet, to the average pub-watching British dude who couldn't care less about title deeds, Liz plays along with this and maintains decorum. It's been a great PR effort, and like all great PR efforts, it's been successful because it's largely true.

They basically juked Phil out of some titles and whatnot, so that the succession of females is assured, no marriage interference from the Continent. Well Phil is that, so he's taken a lesser role. The role of still being the man to a quite incredible Elizabeth II, the Continental Playboy, a good traditional father figure to his whole family. He was a solid dude who got born into both obligation and privilege and I don't fault him for that. He was a good dude.

Not royal worship, this is the best explanation of how Phillip is who he was, it's complex.

If you want to fault Royals, you have to fault Liz. She has actual civic power. This video shows what I figured out on my own through shall I say actual research at a pretty good academic library. Liz can dissolve Parliament and order the British Army to surround London and not let food through. She could arrest all the Lords, and if Parliament tried to meet say in Leeds, she could invest Leeds and arrest everyone there.

Nothing would happen. She can't execute justice on them, and she can't raise money. The combined 200,000 acres of highly productive land with all Rights, including the Right to any whales washed up on the beach, would have to fund it all.

Then things get really grim. Liz can then get money out of The City, London is not the financial center, another whole country called The Square Mile is, it's the biggest one on earth depending on how you count it, arguably more important than NYC, and she can take a bunch of their money is what I've figured out.

Now she is an international superpower. And she can starve the entire Island of Britain into submission by stopping all trade.

AFAI can tell that would all be legal. Arguably she is more powerful than John when he signed the Magna Carta. If the Nobles denied him access to his lands, he has to use his offshore power to do it. And it wasn't enough then.

Well now, the Nobles have been stripped of literally everything, not Liz. Virtually all of the titled houses are in some sort of Charitable Trust at this point, and Lords has zero power as a house. Commons can completely ignore them. Lords can't even delay anymore.

So if Liz neutralizes Parliament, there is no other domestic Estate to stop her. And her wealth and power properly utilized would only INCREASE if she exercised it.

Aw no, the Royals are in charge of that place for real. Well, Elizabeth II is.

I wish the media would make up their minds... A heart attack?!?

What was the drug that brought trouble to his ticker? A legal prescription or illegal substance?

Hospital jello showed more brain activity than on DMX, so the plug was pulled?

Dude should have known the Government doesn't like competition

Bernard Lawrence Madoff (/ˈmeɪdɔːf/ MAY-doff;[1] April 29, 1938 – April 14, 2021) was an American market maker, investment advisor, financier, and convicted fraudster who served a federal prison sentence for offenses related to a massive Ponzi scheme.[2] He was at one time non-executive chairman of the NASDAQ stock market,[3] before being revealed as and later confessing to having been the operator of the largest Ponzi scheme in world history, and the largest financial fraud in U.S. history.[4] Prosecutors estimated the fraud to be worth $64.8 billion based on the amounts in the accounts of Madoff's 4,800 clients as of November 30, 2008.[5]

Madoff founded a penny stock brokerage in 1960, which eventually grew into Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities. He served as its chairman until his arrest on December 11, 2008.[6][7] The firm was one of the top market maker businesses on Wall Street,[8] which bypassed "specialist" firms by directly executing orders over the counter from retail brokers.[9]

At the firm, he employed his brother Peter Madoff as senior managing director and chief compliance officer, Peter's daughter Shana Madoff as the firm's rules and compliance officer and attorney, and his now deceased sons Mark and Andrew. Peter was sentenced to 10 years in prison[10] and Mark died by suicide by hanging exactly two years after his father's arrest.[11][12][13] Andrew died of lymphoma on September 3, 2014.[14]

On December 10, 2008, Madoff's sons told authorities that their father had confessed to them that the asset management unit of his firm was a massive Ponzi scheme, and quoted him as saying that it was "one big lie".[15][16][17] The following day, FBI agents arrested Madoff and charged him with one count of securities fraud. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had previously conducted multiple investigations into his business practices but had not uncovered the massive fraud.[8] On March 12, 2009, Madoff pleaded guilty to 11 federal felonies and admitted to turning his wealth management business into a massive Ponzi scheme. The Madoff investment scandal defrauded thousands of investors of billions of dollars. Madoff said that he began the Ponzi scheme in the early 1990s, but federal investigators believe that the fraud began as early as the mid-1980s[18] and may have begun as far back as the 1970s.[19] Those charged with recovering the missing money believe that the investment operation may never have been legitimate.[20][21] The amount missing from client accounts was almost $65 billion, including fabricated gains.[22] The Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) trustee estimated actual losses to investors of $18 billion.[20] On June 29, 2009, Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison, the maximum allowed. Madoff died in April 2021 while serving out his sentence.[23][24][25]
