Darien gap

They put about a ton of extra weight into them and fitted 12x33" skid steer tyres to drive through the jungles. So yeah.

On the stock 29" the axles survive okay. Not great, but okay for up to 32" skinny.
So which year/model do you own?????

Interesting. Looks like they went to the north of the lake (Bayano) which makes sense as it's practically surrounded by swampy jungle. The road that is there now goes through the middle of the two parts of the lake. When I was there pavement ended not much past Chepo. Now looking at Google Street View it's paved all the way to Yaviza. IIRC, it was just outside of Yaviza where the Corvair body sat rusting away.

The rangerovers that broke all their axles in 1972 with oversize "Swamp" tyres has been bugging me for a while. I was finally able to dig through all the pics and work out what they did:

They were 12-16.5" (common skid steer loader size now) Firestone Town & Country tyres. Almost 33" OD. But got even bigger with all the jungle mud attahced.
They changed to 750-16" Firestone Super All Traction and got through.

The Darien Gap was ~250 miles long back in 1972 with paths only used by smugglers. Now it's got a 200 mile road leaving only ~40 mile gap with a well worn path through.

7.50-16 is pretty much a 235/85r16.
What's stock on those?

Stock rangerover was 205R16 (aka 205/80R16) which is 29". The earliest ones might have had 650-16

7.00-16 (215/85R16) is the biggest you can go while still not touching anything.
750-16 (235/85R16) can rub a bit and you either don't care or adjust steering stops and trim a bit.

Inner guards on these had plenty of clearance but outer panels were cut to fit the ~33" swamp tyres.
