What's new

Darien gap

200k+ just this year to October. Simple migrant families seeking better life in the USA.

For some reason the number has exploded over the past couple years...must be the covids
Interesting.

According to the Panamanian government, more than 151,000 migrants crossed the Darien Gap en route to the United States between January and September 2022, up from just a couple hundred people annually a decade ago.

That averages out to over 500 per day. I have to imagine that there's now a beaten path (at least for foot traffic). It does make one wonder how they're surviving the journey through the gap; I don't think the jungle could sustain that many people and crossing the Darien by foot is still probably a week's journey (or close to it).

These are organized long walks, easy enought to carry a couple days worth of bread

With that amount of traffic, can you imagine the amount of trash and filth littered along that trail?

The medivac unit used me as a "door gunner" (M16 with 40 rounds of ammo, since mounted weapons aren't allowed on a medivac bird) for about a week.
2 mags:eek:

Kinda like our guard duty of clg

Sounds like a good time. Who's down?

I'd drive my K30 down from Canada and all the way if fuel wasn't insane. The logistics of getting a rig down there would suck.
This is where you need to start The Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk highway about 4600 km from the penitentiary.
I arrived in country on Jan 6, 1990. There were still operations ongoing but the bulk of it was over.

I was temporarily assigned to a medivac unit as my permanent unit (617th SOAD) was a little busy to train up a kid fresh out of bootcamp/AIT.

The medivac unit used me as a "door gunner" (M16 with 40 rounds of ammo, since mounted weapons aren't allowed on a medivac bird) for about a week. Closest to "action" for me was watching a couple hammerhead sharks dismantle a smaller fish from the helicopter door when we were flying to David, Panama.
Hmmm, I thought 617 was 160 lite... Can't tell the players without a program.

617th was (at the time) the only permanently forward deployed unit of the 160th. Later on it was rebranded as D Co 160th SOAR. I was there for that transition as well, but I always think of it as the 617th.

This is why my choice is tbi gm. Carry a box full of ignition modules and fuel pumps and there's nothing else to worry with. Sure, it'll need valve guides half way through the trip... so what? Let it blow that puff of smoke and keep going. :flipoff2:

Plus not enough power to hurt itself. You may be onto something there.

I think that's why those old yota's are so popular in 3rd world shitholes.... Stoopid simple and not enough power to pull the skin off a sausage so they never break
I don't know anything about Toyotas, but when I was there, there was a ton of old Toyota trucks driving around. Not sure if that would equate to parts availability though, the humidity (>150 inches of rain per year) and sea air is rough on metal parts, or so I've heard:laughing:
