What's new

Craigslist et al. And deposits

One time I went to buy an international truck from a place in Commerce city. Its a few hour drive. Called the guy, asked about it, told him I was on my way up and headed out with cash in hand. Got almost there (like a half hour away) and he calls me and says don't bother my boss doesn't want to sell it anymore. You can bet your ass I went ahead and showed up there anyhow and let them know exactly what pieces of shit they were. God that pissed me off.
I had something similar happen. Agreed to buy some wheels through a FB ad for asking price and informed seller I was on my way to pick them up. It was about 45 minute drive. Half way there I get a FB notification that the item was sold. I assumed that meant they were sold to me since I was on the way. Nope. When I arrived, sorry I sold them to my father. WTF.

Selling too low is a real deal. Just got married, was purging the wife's apartment. Listed a bunkbed, ratty couch, and some other stuff for free. Tons of idiots saying they'd come and didn't. Raised the price on the bunkbed to $100 and the couch that I didn't even think Goodwill would take to $50. Had both sold for asking price within the hour, then bought a nice bottle of whiskey with the cash and drank to others stupidity.

Is it worth $1400 to send a vid of it running? if not go back to $2K and fuck with idiots, pretty simple.

This all day long.

Send a video to his email from your phone of it running. When he tells you he wants to see it running in person send him your address. It’s only worth $1,400 when you said for him to get it and you’re acting like he offered $400 and asked you to deliver.

I post what I want for it, and that it what it sells for unless it’s a friend. I’m not greedy and the prices are always fair.

“I have someone coming after payday for full price so if you want it for what I’m asking, it’s first come, first serve, cash in hand.”

My favorite are the guys whining about how they bought stuff like what I'm selling for half the price 20 years ago.

If i don't think someone's price is reasonable, i'll email and say "i don't want to waste anyone's time, will you take $xx because that what i think the value is" they either say yes or no

I'm trying to sell snow tires on wheels. they were listed at $500 and a dude offered me 300. i told him no. he asked what my lowest was. i asked what his highest was. he never responded.

Yep. People meet up at a public place, sometimes offer a little lower, we meet in the middle, and off we go. That's 95% of my transactions.

for some reason i can't change font color or even bold it....i was going after the word "buying" you know because your truck situation from the other board:flipoff2::lmao:

Ah. Well, I was referring to CL and FBMP. Going through a dealer is a whoooooole shit show I never want to go through again.

:laughing:I know it isn't great unless you have a shit load of cash.

Fbmp has never panned out well for me. Craigslist is 50/50. Anymore i try to buy new or only from/ to people i know.

I'm usually trying to buy stuff and am apparently at a huge disadvantage because I have a job. A couple weeks ago a guy posted a frame with a transmission I needed at like 9pm Sunday night. Told him I wanted it at his asking price and could get it the next day after work. He said no problem. I Hooked the trailer up and took it to work. I messaged him in the morning saying I was leaving work at 4. no response, messaged at 2, no response at 4pm he marks it sold, never once responded to me.

If they haven't given you a deposit for whatever stupid reason there is no deal. And if they want you to hold it for less than listed price without coming in person and/or leaving a deposit there is no reason to do anything for them. It's like them and their offer don't exist so who cares. They get what they give. Nothing.

I pulled the ad because I don’t need to sell the ATV, I just haven’t rode it in over a year and it sat for
over a year before the previous ride. Just looking to free up space but my God.... I’m like most of you, if I see a fair deal I pay asking price.

just bought a Wellsaw model 8. Tossed a piece of 3x6 .25 wall box tube on the deck and it cut a perfect 45.

Here is your asking price, boom done!

This. Sold the wifemobile a while back, she's going "you won't get $400", I'm thinking there's "good" ones (for reference we're talking a 12yo Kia here, good is relative) out there for $2500, ours had some non-critical stuff bad (AC, exterior trim, paint) and would need work (clutch, timing belt) soon but was a beater driver mostly-as-is, listed it for $1200, had somebody ask if I'd take $1k within an hour. They came to look, said man, the windshield is worse than I thought (I listed it in the ad as bad, my dad joked he wasn't sure if he should wash it or kick it out, it was that bad), will you go $900? Sure, done. Betting if I'd listed it for $500 I'd still have it.

It takes an hour to get across my city, and I often sell stuff to people from the more affluent city 2 hours away, with a phone call, I'll hold something if they're on the road, and I expect the same from others.

I also get the address before I roll out, cuz I'm gonna shit in your sunroof if you skunk me:laughing:

FWIW, it's easy to weed out the dumbshits and make decent deals with decent people if you handle it right
1-2 hours isn't uncommon around here, someone sets up a time and tells me that they are on their way I won't sell it out from under them while they are driving to buy it.
Otherwise, it's first come, first serve, cash or no deal.

I had a pair of tires that were low on life and I tried to give them away for free as spares or to get somebody by for another season. Same thing. Bumped the price to $25 each and that evening both were gone without any haggling or flaking

Every time, repeat EVERY time someone lowballs you over the internet/phone/messenger/etc., your standard reply should be; "I'm open to negotiating the price in person. When would you like to come see it?". Second rule; bring cash. Third rule; sell it to the first person who shows with cash. DO NOT COMMIT to saving it for someone, whether they've been there and seen it, or over the web, or whatever. Jeez... shouldn't even have to type this stuff.

If they annoy me I just say sure, give them the address to a fast food place, and ignore their messages of rage that follow.

Sold some ammo I bought just before all the shortages. Got several complaints about my price, ($.75 for M855 on stripper clips), and now it's priced right in that range...if you can find it. Yeah, $90 for a battle pack of 120 is over priced, and I wouldn't pay it, but I have plenty stockpiled and the ability to make a lot more.

A fair price is what the market will bear.

People are shitty buyers. I mean I'm a cheap fuck, but if what you have is at a reasonable price then I'll come get it. If its high then I'll show and wave what I want to spend in front of you.

On the other side, if I'm selling I don't negotiate on the internet much. I expect if you are a cheap fuck like me and you want the item you at least show up with money and show you are seriously a buyer.

Too many times I've agreed low price to move an item and then they say they need until next Friday for a paycheck.
Fucks sake be honest. Say you're a cheap ass and willing to spend $xx I'd honor that over a no show or the next Friday speech. Hell, even say you are a broke fuck and making ends meet will get you farther than pretending some other story.

He says he wanted to hear it run before sending deposit..... no agreement to hold was made. It someone want to hold it, they pay a non-refundable deposit on it to hold until xxx. Don't show up, don't like it, try to re-negotiate, etc and you get good bye and don't get the deposit back. Simple.

As a buyer, my time is valuable, and I frequently can't just drop everything and go buy something right now. I'm going to negotiate a price, pickup time, etc. up front, send a deposit and then show up on time, pay and go.

As either a buyer or seller I'd far rather negotiate over the internet. Minimal time investment, and easy to tell people to fawk off.

You know at lot reflects on the type of vehicle too. Certain type of vehicle attracts certain type of buyer. Sold a camaro and isuzu rodeo for my daughter, those buyers were all a bunch of not very nice people.
Eclipse, VW jetta. Whole different story, super nice people. F150 super crew, super nice respectful people.

Funny, I just made a phone call based on a for sale sign my dad sent me a picture of and agreed to show up with cash today. No idea how many miles, what it looks like, ect. I started asking questions and 5hen told the guy "nevermind, those are just minor details"

supposedly runs good, is a 5spd, and truck and trailer have had new brakes and tires in the last year.

Meeting the guy at 330

Pics I got before calling, interested to see what I bought.
