Best steering box for custom builds?

Thanks....was just looking over Dorman's site. The Sweet Mfg Series 700 box you linked in the DE hydro assist thread mentioned being used in all sorts of Chevy passenger cars from '64-'88....most of the 80's stuff had built in TREs on the end opposite the sector shaft....so one could conceivably cut those down too, but your link is super helpful to make sure we're not guessing about which pitman arm will fit the sector shaft diameter/spline count.

Thanks again!!
We snag up just about any we can find. Jeep pitman arms are easy to come by. The SAMS Offroad flat one is not a good one to use, it’s to soft so it’s easy to stretch bend and strip the splines out of.

I'm kind of wondering if the Saginaw boxes and the Scout one have the same 32 spline sector. Found a place specializing in Scout parts and the flat one w/o any master splines is $89 while some of their drop offerings are ~$60-100. No idea on how good the steel is or if the temper is good or not....the flat one looks eerily similar to your PSC one though.

Thanks. I'm leaning towards the 3" ram.

Again thank you very much for tou help and insights!

How many thousand pounds you think this monster is going to weigh? A 2 1/2 ram with a 1600 psi pump puts out 5000 pounds of steer force. A 3” ram with the same pump puts out 8500 pounds of steer force. If the vehicle weighs more than 5000 pounds I’d want the 3” ram. If you’re doing 3” now you definitely want the bigger pump. 6 gpm should do a 3” ram at 4 turns L2L sufficiently.

It's should be 4500-5k tops. It's a very old 50"w 4seat JHF chassis that will be cut down to 2 seater. 8.1/th400/Mag/205 SD60f/14br 115wb on 47 LTBs.

If a 2.5 will work, save a little money over a 3" with proper pumps I'm ok with that.

all the saginaw boxes seem to have the same spline and will interchange. I tried alot of them on my scout II box. shoot I'm even running a jeep xj pitman on my 67 nissan patrol manual box. same splines. Made a nice drop pitman arm for the 3" lift. most manuals are a smaller spline.

Yeah they pretty much all have same spline. One difference tho is the master spline on the pitman arms. Jeep pitman arms are clocked one spline different than GM ones.

I haven't seen any in awhile but back in the 2010s we were upgrading jeep boxes to a H1 box. It was basically a big bore box. Same mount, same spline, bigger sector shaft.
