What's new

Anyone running Starlink internet yet?

I used to install hughesnet before it was hughesnet and aside from the throttling problems mentioned above, the upload speeds were pretty bad and latency was a problem for people. I'm not sure how any satellite based internet could solve the latency issue inherent in sending data that far.

Ahh, I read into it and it's interesting and I see how latency is not an issue like it is with hughesnet. I'm using an LTE base local wideband internet service that's only $35/month now so I've got no interest in the $99 starlink idea but it is interesting.

How did you find that service?

I have been having issues finding something for my house.

I have used all the Sat providers and they all sucked.

Currently use a Verizon Jetpack but it could not suck anymore than it does, barely works ever.

Word of mouth. A local university got a rural development grant to put up LTE towers in the name of education access. You have to sign up for a "class" that's free and you never actually take or do anything for. It's sweet. I had to buy a $250 POE antenna and hoist it up on top of my canadian watch tower and it works great for 3 years now.

Private LTE will likely become more common in the coming years. With the CBRS bands it was licensed in a way far more friendly to smaller groups buying regional frequencies rather than having to be a major player to even be considered. And with 5G being cheaper per radio to install due to shift in designs it's not cost prohibitive to build tower sites.

There are currently WISPs around, but this should make it much easier for new providers and the tech is simpler on the CPE side.

I cut them loose when I found something better, but I had viasat for several years and never had a latency problem: did voice and video calls, had a vpn running for a while, etc.: not sure just what all the fuss was about.

How do you know so much about firstnet, I thought it was kind of a hush deal besides companies like the one I work for installing it?

I install and maintain comms for multiple public safety agencies, They consider me support staff for First responders, etc...

Since I qualify for FirstNet services I set up my rural home for internet using FirstNet as it was just as fast or faster than Fixed Wireless.
When Starlink is available in my area I will get it under a government price plan.

Northern Colorado in the foothills west of Ft Collins

been on the starlink beta list for about 6 months. Paid for the gear three weeks ago. Arrived today.

took 45 mins to install 30 of which was drilling and sleeving a hole for the cable. Beyond simple with two color coded cables and a power cord.

tripod install and it orientated itself when plugged in approx N or NE. Neat to watch it search for the satellites.

160mbps peak. average 120 ish. 40 upload

considering we struggle with two bar LTE cell service and the booster makes little difference I love the results from the Starlink so far.

will report back how it does in snow. Will consider moving it onto the roof to keep it away from the deer.

Is it a satellite or antenna?

We have both, and they both seem to go to shit when any storm comes in.

I was wondering how that was going to work with snow. My only thing against it is the initial cost. But the monthly isn't bad. I live just NW of wellington. I am very interested in this as our DSL is maybe 5mb and 1/2mb upload

I guess technically the consumer gets an antennae. The Starlink system will eventually consist of hundreds or thousands of satellites

Other users report the heat from the antennae (size of a large pizza) keeps it clear of snow. Our Directv loses signal in heavy snow until I clear the dish. I expect the same here

Yep... Used to live on owl canyon rd, dsl wasn't even available the years I lived there.

Im one mile south of owl canyon. Lived in this area most my life. I just about signed up about a month ago for the service. Might do it now. That sounds like it'll work much better then waiting for fiber to ever get out this way

Tons of reviews over on Reddit. Many recent pics of snow covered dishes still working. Excellent up/down speeds, with low latency.

Also reports of getting 1-2 sec breaks in service every few (4-6) hrs.

Elon is yeeting the little satellites up as fast as he can, so I expect service to only get better. The pics of the satellites are wild. It such a epic undertaking you can't really grasp the scale. It's 1000's of little satellites in LOW orbit. A SKY NET if you will.

We currently use a cobbled together bootleg fixed LTE through T-mobile. It works well enough. We've reached the limits many times with two online students and two home offices.

I signed up for the Beta and never heard back. I learned that they opened my area by a fluke and signed up within hours of it going live. That was 2-3 weeks ago. Haven't heard anything back.

I am by far most hope/full/ exited to get one for our recreational property in the stix. No cell, or internet. This would be HUGE, we can both work remote for a large part of our jobs. Would be amazing to be able to enjoy our summer spot more.

Hard to imagine it putting enough heat off to keep snow from building up.

Out Hughes net looses signal with almost any snow

They took my 99$ deposit little over a week ago. Hope the rest comes soon. Our ATT has not been the best for gaming or streaming.

I placed my order a few weeks ago, supposed to be available in the summer. I can’t wait, less than twice the price and 50x the speed of what I have now.

How long are the various cables for it...power cable, Ethernet etc? New version is supposed to be heated to keep snow from building up on it. I’m on the waitlist for one now....

Just got off the phone with my Elon contact. Said he doubts the price will ever increase, but expects the speed to increase with hardware improvements over time.

I'm in no hurry and said to wait 6 months to see what's up. If anything, foresees starlink to break from SpaceX as it will be a game changer in years to follow.

I signed up last year for the beta, got an email it will be available mid year in my area, not sure I want to do it yet. able to stream and interweb stuff with my Visible LTE phone.

Antennae to box approx 50', box to wifi router approx 10'. Looks like cat5 with booster on each end for antennae cable (any hole through a wall needs to be approx 1/2"

I got the notification last week its available in my area. Signed up and sent my monies. Out in butt fuck no where in middle of Alberta. From the reviews, looks awesome. Better latency then what I currently get on 4G.

Same boat here - Hughesnet, Mobile tethering, and I have signed up and am waiting.

Wrnglestar on Youtube got it a little while back and gave it really good reviews as far as upload/download speeds. I'm keeping my eye on it, but I can see myself making the switch eventually even though there is reliable cable internet here.
