Another small detail that has not been discussed, all of the guns used on a film set are rented from somewhere. The blanks and dummy rounds have to come from somewhere reputable also. There you go saying the movie industry is some how special. As such, we can suspend normal safety procedures.
Let’s say you do spend the big bucks and hire a qualified armorer that’s affiliated with a large prop shop. He’s more than likely trained by them, working under their license and insurance and, you will be renting their equipment and ammo! They won’t rent to just anybody either, you need to be on the list!
We’ll use ISS Props for instance, they are a one stop shop for everything you could ever need, in triplicate!
Choose your period correct revolver and they’ll send you a matching 3pc set or just individual items.
A set would include…
A fully functional gun with a plugged barrel that is only capable of firing blanks.
A real gun that’s non-functioning for a myriad of reasons, parts were robbed to repair better inventory or just damaged beyond repair. The weight of a real firearm just looks better due to gravity, a swinging holster, dropped in the dirt, thrown at the shelf full of rotgut in the backbar etc…
They either have or will pour as many rubber copies as you need. These are used in rehearsals, fight scenes, or thrown at people and carried by the NPC folks.
All of your blanks WILL be supplied by them or their affiliates and are non returnable. The armorer just rips off all of the leftovers to get rid of the liability! My buddy will often invite actors, producers, and other VIPs to the range to use it up.
All of this is obscenely expensive but, they are very serious about safety and inventory control . Real ammunition would never be co-mingled or even allowed nearby.
AB hired Honey Pussy because Thell Reed was a famous old school armorer propping up his family. He did have an amazing career, unfortunately, those days were long gone. I was told by insiders that he lost it all due to his drug abuse. Most of his gun collection was sold off years earlier, even if they weren’t his to sell. Who owned these weapons? Is it a single owner collection or just random people renting onesies and twosies?
If Rust’s armorers were accredited and approved to rent film prepped firearms ( plugged ), we wouldn’t be having this conversation!
