Ak porn

My saiga 223 was a capable of about 3-1/2 to 4" groups at 100 yards. Might have done a little better with magnification.
Most ars aren't sub moa.
the ak is a tool that was designed to hit a man sized target out to 400 or so meters. It does that just fine.
I highly doubt he has a sub moa ak without using a different barrel and non com block ammo.
If you want to play bench rest accuracy the ak is a poor choice unless you are really bored and want to spend money for not much result.

Since ak pork thread.

Problem with loading 5.45x39 right now is brass, which is impossible to find. Hornady was making it for a while, but I haven't seen any in a couple years. Bullet selection is also pretty non-existent. Hornady's 60gr vmax is about the only option. Lee made a sizing die for converting .223 to 5.45, but it was a limited-run die, and I haven't seen one for sale in a while. Some people take an appropriately-threaded bolt and drill/ream a hole in the center to use on their press to push bullets through.

I'm using Hornady's 5.45 dies, which can also be difficult to find. I've got a few hundred loaded up with various flavors of powder waiting on me to have time to take it to the range with a chronograph.
It looks like there’s some possibilities there. I’m hoping to see your results. Do you think the extractor and ejector will play nice with brass cases?

I'm not seeing anything too crazy from the loads I've done so far.

The biggest problem I have, especially at public ranges, is collecting the brass. Most brass catchers don't easily work with the AK's charging handle. Currently I have a large net on a stand to catch the cases which seems to work alright. In the past, I've draped some heavy canvas over the action to slow the cases down and leave them in a somewhat pile below the bench. Tactical Brass Recovery makes a bag that supposedly works with an AK. They're not cheap though.

To not lose the brass from my M1A I fabbed up a screen frame with chicken wire (< 3'/side) that I screwed to the right side of my shooting bench. If one is using a public range a couple of C-clamps should be sufficient to attach it to the shooting bench. Works pretty well for me.

on one of mine I did the left side charging handle shit expressly for a brass catcher to work
not worth it

been meaning to make a frame to hold up a pillowcase or some such, stood on the bench a couple inches to the right of the rifle
but ain't got round to it

I have one of those in 16 ga.

THE JC HIGGINS (SEARS) MODEL 10

The Sears and Roebuck listed the Model 10 bolt-action shotgun in their catalog from 1946 until 1958 and priced it at $30 (you could get a cleaning kit and case for about 45 cents more). It was a “man sized, hard hitting shotgun” according to the catalog. They came in .410, 12, 16 and 20 gauges, had a four-round capacity, and most could be bought with either a modified or full choke barrel.

The Model 10 has never been the center of controversy per se, but there was and is an ongoing debate about its history and even its name.

Though it’s generally accepted that High Standard, a company most notable for its .22-caliber competitive- and Olympic-quality pistols, manufactured the bulk of the Model 10s, there is still debate on who was originally produced it. Some conjecture that the early ones were made by H&R because H&R sold a bolt-action shotgun at that time that was very similar to it."

I have seen VEPRs hold a decent group at 100 with an optic, but not sub-moa. I'd be surprised if any import 7.62x39 ammunition is even consistent enough to have a chance to hold sub-moa through any decent rifle.
I know its not an AK but my 7.62x39 ruger american can drill 3/4 moa with chinese surplus shit at 100 yards.

Just snagged one today! :smokin:

It's kind of a unicorn, I've been after one for a few years, only seen 7.62x39 on the GunBroker and Ruger's website. Every time I've asked any local gun shop about them they never knew they existed.

I was looking at them on GunBroker again Monday evening, I thought the prices were kind of high so I googled them to see what MSRP was now and what big box stores were listing them for. Academy Sports was one of the first Google search results and they claimed to have one in stock in my town.

I couldn't believe it so I went to check before myself. The rest is history.

Oh man, I haven't wanted a bolt gun in a long time but now I do.

What do these go for on the open market these days?

$499.99 at Academy, I still had a $100 gift card from Christmas. Made buying at Academy that much more appealing.

They're $580+ at GunBroker, add shipping and FFL on top of that. :frown:

Got my first AK this weekend. I know, i'm a failure of a gun guy. WASR 10 and 500 rounds of Wolf HP for $800, dont think it was too bad a deal. No pics as its fully 90's tapco'd out and that level of carnage is too terrible for even this site. Should be meeting up with a guy that has some unfinshed stocks and foregrips so I can make it pretty again. Will need to decide stain color

A little annoyed, the ak PMAGs I have for the PTR32 won't fit so I may end up with 2 things that take AK mags but not the same AK mags. :mad3:

Oh and I have a ruger ranch 7.62. Most fun bolt gun I have. Need to tune the mags some, I bought it with a boyds stock swapped and the mags are just a little too loose and sometimes dont want to feed. Its on the squawk list to do.

My only AK is a Century imported/modified WASR-10, all of my various mags seem to work including Pmags. Every mag is looser than I'm comfortable with, but the WASR doesn't seem to care, none have fallen out yet. Maybe the mag well needs some further whittling?

Century also welded a chunk of metal inside the mag well after hogging it out to take 30 round mags, to simulate the dimple other AKs that originally take double stack/30 round mags have. Maybe look at its thickness and placement too.

On the Ruger are you using the Mini 30 mags still? I watched a YouTube video of a guy who swapped the OE mag well out for one from a .223 or .300 Blk model, which allowed him to use 7.62x39 AR mags. Since I already have a 7.62x39 AR and several mags I think that's what I'm going to do. Though if I got a Mini 30 I already have one mag for it... :homer:

Thanks for letting me know I need one of those! Didn't know they existed.

There's also the CZ 527 if you want to shoot something a little more refined.
They're spendy but Ruger made the M77 in 7.62x39 for a bit, I lusted after a stainless all weather that was on GunBroker a while back.

Rare as hen's teeth, but Savage made the 10/110 in 7.62x39 for a hot minute too. I came across 2x of these, allegedly new old stock at a show, but had other priorities at the time.

Yep, definitely test with a variety of mags and get some accurate measurements of the magwell but most of the WASR's were imported with narrow single stack magwells and then widened once they arrived. And the Century guns may have been hogged out by a drunk monkey with a carbide cutter...

The pmags seem too long. Might be able to whittle the front a little but also interested in getting my ptr32 to run with steel AK mags.

The ruger still uses mini 30 mags, I have 5-6 ruger branded ones and they all do it. Don't have a 7.62 ar, so that might solve it but doesnt help much. AK mags would be nice but there arent many short AK mags so there isnt as much point.

I have the 527 in 223 and its a dream to shoot. Only complaint is mag prices, $45 for a 5 rounder sucks but damn they feed smooth.

Around here the 7.62 527s are going for 900-1200 due to demand and scarcity. I would buy a ruger ranch now and hope the CZ prices come down to reasonable again. I think I paid 450 for my 223 version

Welp, I don't know shit about AK's. went ahead and bought a couple WBP polish 80% lowers, whatever that means.

Do we have a thread for parts and builds and stuff or is this the place? Going to see what I can slowly piece together something that functions.

Start shopping for parts kits.

The Polish make some of the finest AKs, Circle Eleven, FB Radom, and WBP all make/made excellent parts and/or guns.
Too bad the parts kit boom went and left. $60 parts kits are now $500+, insanity.

Oh and magazine pics because...

All parts kits are not the same, stay away from the milled Bulgarians with that receiver... Ask me how I know...

Front trunnions seem to be coming from Mars now and shipping is a bitch. Drilling for the barrel pins is the hardest part unless you can source "virgin" stuff, like the gas block and sight blocks. Properly sized reamers are your best friends. There are other things that help in assembly...

Oh boy, we're fully fuckin tacticool now! USPS held the mount hostage for a week but I got my MRO installed tonight. Light is a Streamlight Pro-Tac HL-X on a T-rex arms light bar, on an RS Regulate rail.

I have built 100s, let me know if you run into anything.
